A taste for Papa John’s pizza led Marie French of Winston-Salem to try her luck in the Papa John’s instant game and she became the first person to win the top prize of $20,000.
“I buy Papa John’s,” said French after collecting her prize at the lottery’s Greensboro regional office. “I like the pizza. And I like the taste. And I won. I didn’t expect that.”
French, who works as a cashier at McDonald’s, said she planned to use her winnings to help pay for the college education of her two children.
“I feel happy, joyous, about to cry,” French said of her win. “I’m at a loss for words.”
She bought her ticket at Titi’s Convenience on Bruce Street in Winston-Salem.
The Papa John’s game is a partnership between the Education Lottery and Papa John’s. It began in October with $3.7 million in cash prizes and free menu items and discounts from Papa Johns valued at $3 million.
A player can redeem a discount or free menu item found on a ticket – such as free pizza, chicken wings or bread sticks – by ordering from a North Carolina Papa John’s location online and entering the bonus code.
With French’s win, three more top prizes of $20,000 remain to be claimed. We can’t wait to meet the next top prize winner!
