‘Fantastic’ $1 million prize among best of the week

If you scratched off a $1 million prize, would you have to look at it twice? Danny Langford did. The Gastonia man beat odds of 1 in 1.1 million to win the top prize playing the Color of Money instant game. Langford, an environmental health and safety coordinator, said it felt "absolutely fantastic" to win.

Just north of Gastonia in Catawba County, Meghan Lamberth won the top prize of $150,000 playing the new Green & Gold instant game. The Maiden woman was on her lunch break when she scratched her lucky ticket and, at first, thought she had won $150. “Then I saw the three zeroes and my hand started shaking,” she recalled.

In Wake County, a Cary man won $200,000 playing 20X The Cash. James Deroisier was buying grocers at the Lowe’s Foods on High House Road in Cary when he decided to try his luck on a lottery ticket. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d win something like this,” he said.

A Fayetteville man is the latest player to win $750,000 playing Jumbo Bucks. Alexander Pickle bought the lucky ticket at the Kangaroo Express on Ireland Drive in Fayetteville.

Since Friday is Valentine’s Day, we saved the sweetest story of good luck for last. Shirley and Stanley Davis of Raeford in Hoke County enjoy playing lottery draw games as a couple - they’ve been married for 42 years. After winning $348,078 in the Feb. 9 Carolina Cash 5 drawing, they said the prize money will help them enjoy retirement together. “It’s a nice Valentine’s Day present,” Shirley said.

The $63,141 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot for the Feb. 11 drawing has yet to be claimed. The lucky ticket was sold at the Bearpond Mart on Raleigh Road in Henderson.

Speaking of jackpots, heading into Friday’s Mega Millions drawing, the jackpot annuity stood at $139 million ($76.4 million cash).

Let’s talk Powerball. The jackpot annuity for Saturday’s drawing weighs in at a hefty $330 million ($189 million cash). Frederick Cable of Bryson City won $10,000 in the Feb. 5 Powerball drawing.

Three more $10,000 Powerball prizes are unclaimed. One, for the Feb. 8 drawing, was sold at Gate #414 on South Concord Parkway in Concord. The other two, for the Feb. 12 drawing, were sold on opposite ends of the state - one at the Islander Kwik Mart on Fort Fisher Boulevard in Kure Beach and the other at the Ingles on Hendersonville Road in Fletcher.

As we often do, we wrap up the wrap-up with some more of this week’s biggest instant winners. They are:

  • Ray Penland of Hillsborough, who won $10,000 playing $5,000 a Week for Life!
  • Travis Pennington of Raleigh, who won $10,000 playing EZ Money
  • William Rosser of Roanoke Rapids, who won $10,000 playing 50 X The Cash
  • Bejamin Sadler of Charlotte, who won $10,000 playing $120 Million Cash
  • Ashley Gore of Whiteville, who won $15,000 playing Bonus Jackpot

So there you have it. Until next time, have a fun and safe weekend. See you soon here in the Lucke-Zone.

I'm sure there is nothing more exciting than scanning a winning ticket and seeing the words "Redeem at lottery" on the terminal LED display. If I had a $100,000 winning ticket, I would go straight to NCEL instead of taking my chances in the general public.

I know that my turn is coming soon. I keep getting close and I can feel it. Congrats to all of the above winners. I'm in it to win it.

I have asked this question before and it has not been answered. Why? I would like to no how are winners picked in the Lucke-Rewards drawings? NC Lottery
Lucke-Rewards drawings are conducted using a random number generator, under the supervision of an auditor, according to specific security procedures. The results are random; each entry made has the same chance of winning.

2/24/2014 06:00 - Betty K.

When you make ten entries at one time. I know you get one conformation number. Is it better to do one at a time.Or is it better to do a lot of entries. I just want to know if it makes a difference when it come to the machine choosing the winners.Just wondering. NC Lottery
It makes no difference; each entry has the same chance of winning whether it was made by itself or was one of many entries made in a single transaction. Good luck!

You are not answering my question!! Why have the instant winners and the pick 4 winners for 2-14 not been posted. I am asking only about these winners. NC Lottery
Sorry we misunderstood your question. We looked into it and there was an error with the file upload that day. Thanks to you pointing this out, it's fixed now!

Hello Lottery commission i sending this note to you because my sister-in-law bought a winning ticket at a specific store in Charlotte. She mistakingly gave the clerk the wrong ticket and he gave her $25 instead of the original amount of $100,000. The ticket was Mega-Bucks. How do we resolve this issue? NC Lottery
This is a security issue. Please contact the lottery's security department right away at 1-888-732-6235

The more I enter the less chance I have. I think this is rigged just like other drawings from the State. It seem to be always People from big cities that win. I yet seen anyone from Raeford winning, or Steadman. I will quit posting or entering. Good Luck to all. NC Lottery
The lottery is fair to everyone who plays. It is not harder or easier to win the lottery based on where you live - there are just more people playing for a chance to win in higher-population areas. Coincidentally, there is a story about winners from Raeford in this very blog entry. Good luck to you!

If notified by phone, who and where does the call come from? NC Lottery
A member of the lottery's marketing, advertising & communications team will notify a winner; we will always invite you to call us back to verify that we are who we say we are :-)

Lottery Commission I have a question. When i entered my powerball ticket into Lucke-Rewards, it was worth 20 points. I only paid $2 for the ticket and noticed that the last five digits on the entry code were all numeric, in the past it's alpha-numeric. Is there anything significant to this ticket? Also it was not a winner. NC Lottery
A $2 draw game ticket should be worth between 2 and 10 points. Maybe you already had 10 points from another ticket before you entered that one? As for the entry code, we don't have any reason to think there's anything unusual about it.

2/20/2014 12:25 - brennie l.

What happened to the winners lists for 2-14? You're not showing any winners for that date. NC Lottery
Your question is a popular one. We announce winners as soon as we can, but that can only happen #1 after a player responds to notification and #2 completes the claim process. That can take days, sometimes weeks.

Playing the lottery in NC sucks. The Powerball and Megamillions jackpot always seem to be somewhere else so it's a waste of money playing it anywhere in NC. The Pick 3 and pick 4s bring the least payout numbers. Rarely a quad or a good number like 1234, 1357, 2468(in this order) are drawn, being that these are reward the players type number. Their scratch offs payouts also suck. NC Lottery is so obsessed with funneling money to education that they forget the players are the ones who make this possible. NC Lottery
Of the 319 million people living in the United States, about 9 million of them live in North Carolina. A Powerball or Mega Millions ticket here has the same chance of beating the odds as a ticket sold anywhere else. The results of Pick 3 & Pick 4 drawings are random. The lottery also pays out a higher percentage in prizes on scratch-offs today than when the lottery began. We hope you'll only play the lottery if you're having fun.

Spread the wealth folks. It's good for our economy. Now, my economy could use a little help!Let's win some money!

2/17/2014 09:14 - Marvin R.

If you do 10 (ten) entries in the Lucky Rewards Drawings at one time, should it give you 10 confirmation numbers? How does that work? NC Lottery
If you make ten entries at once, you will get one confirmation code, that refers to the one "transaction." If you enter one drawing ten separate times, you will get ten separate confirmation codes.

2/16/2014 11:52 - Anita M.

It appears none of these are from online lottery. Are those winners listed elsewhere or is the only winners purchasing at lottery location stores? NC Lottery
If you are referring to winners in Lucke-Rewards drawings, those winners are posted here in the Lucke-Zone, in the Lucke-Rewards area, on the WINNERS tab.

2/16/2014 07:35 - Betty K.

Congrats to everyone who won.I'm still hoping one day It will happened. I'm not giving up.I can't play everyday like some people. But I'm not hating on anyone.Just keep the the faith and never give up.

I still don't know if I must enter my entry tickets or just watch to see if Iwin with them! NC Lottery
You do both. When you buy an instant ticket, you scratch to see if you win. If you don't, you can enter it here in the Lucke-Zone for reward points. All draw game tickets, winning & non-winning, can be entered here for reward points. Then you can use the points to enter Lucke-Rewards drawings for more chances to win. If you have more questions, click on the "HELP" link at the top right-hand corner of the screen

2/15/2014 12:51 - Kevin M.

Will you ever have drawings which are $1 million and above on this second chance site? NC Lottery
We have definitely had game-specific second chance drawings for $1 million (Carolina Gold) and $3 million (Holiday Millions). But as far as Lucke-Rewards, there are no plans at this time to have a drawing for a prize that large. Maybe sometime down the line!
