While the chance to win medals in the winter games comes around only every four years, you can play for a chance to win big jackpots anytime you want. Heading into the weekend, the Mega Millions jackpot annuity stands at $107 million ($59.8 million cash). The Carolina Cash 5 jackpot weighs in at $210,000. And the Powerball jackpot annuity has climbed all the way to $247 million for Saturday night ($142.5 million cash).
So while we look ahead to this weekend's big games, let's take a look back at who won the biggest lottery prizes last week.
We start in the east, where a Wayne County woman scratched off $100,000 playing Diamond 7's. Carmen O'Quinn of Seven Springs bought her lucky ticket at the La Tienda Carmen's Grocery on Outlaw Bridge Road in Albertson.
South of the Triad in Davidson County, a Lexington man says his $264,015 Cash 5 win means he can pay off his student loans and buy a new car. “I just want to spend this money wisely,” John Adegbenjo said as he collected his winnings. “To win like this is a big privilege.” He purchased his winning ticket at the Quik Chek on Old U.S. 52 North in Welcome.
A Charlotte man who stopped at the store for a soda walked out a $100,000 winner. Vernard Jones beat odds of 1 in 645,000 to win the top prize playing Mega Bucks. He bought the soda, and his lucky ticket, at the Quick 'N E-Z on West Trade Street in Charlotte.
The biggest win of the week came in Northwest North Carolina in Allegheny County. Cheryl Powell, who has taught reading and math in Sparta for 28 years, won $361,110 in the Feb. 2 Cash 5 drawing. “I never dreamed I would actually win,” she said. “This is an incredible feeling.” Powell said she plans to retire and spend more time with her family.
Two Powerball winners claimed big prizes this week. James Price of Lexington won $20,000 in the Feb. 1 drawing. Abraham Cruz of Fayetteville, won $10,000 in the Jan. 18 drawing.
Eleven players scratched their way to $10,000. Fred Tayler of Hickory won $30,000 playing Triple the Money.
Three winners won $50,000 instantly: Ruby Cook of Fayetteville, playing Diamond Crossword; Julia Myers of Thomasville, playing Junior Big Ol' Bucks; and Franklin Pressley of Laurinburg, playing Super Loteria.
There you have it, another week of big winners. Until next time, y'all have a fun and safe weekend. See you next time here in the Lucke-Zone.
