Best of the week: New mom’s $1 million Mother’s Day win

Of the $20 million players across the state won, a Wilmington woman’s prize is the biggest - and has the best story.

Last year on Mother’s Day, Brandy Hatcher learned that she was expecting her first child. This Mother’s Day, she purchased a $4,000,000 Gold Bullion ticket that would go on to win her $1 million.

“I had just gone to the store to buy mints and decided to try a ticket on the way out,” Hatcher said. “I really couldn’t believe it. Between last Mother’s Day and this one, I don’t think it could get much better.”

George Stewart of Sanford hit the Carolina Cash 5 jackpot on Wednesday night to win $311,163. “I told my wife that someone had won last night’s Cash 5 drawing,” Stewart said the next day. “She said, ‘Oh well’. Then I looked at her and said, ‘We did.’ It was a Hallmark moment. We’re so excited.”

Three lucky Carolina Cash 5 players split the $251,571 jackpot in the May 8 drawing, winning them $83,857 apiece. The winners are Bobby King of Spring Hope, Roderick Lloyd of Sanford and Penny Johnson of Winston-Salem.

Greenville resident Mary Porter won $30,000 instantly playing a Red Hot 5’s ticket. Ten more lucky winners scratched their way to $10,000 this week:

I was wondering on the second chance drawing why there are so many winners notified but no names. Is there any way that I could have not been notified if I won! There's really no way to check to see if my entry numbers have won. Been playing second chance drawing for over a year and entered many tickets but no luck.NC Lottery
We can't announce a winner's name until he or she responds to notification AND completes the claim process, which sometimes has to be done in person, and therefore can take days or weeks.

DEGUZMAN,, If one enters 75, $20 tickets they will get a minimum of 1500 points. But several may pay double or 100 , 200 or more on one ticket. You may notice many of yours will have a larger point vale than the ticket cost. No matter how many or compiling points, the account won't allow mote than 75 tickets entered, no matter the ticket value. I have a question mam, How can you tell how many points a person enters per day without being on their on line account? That info is not on the web site! Sorry to hear about your lock out! I had it happen once. Honest mistakes are investigated to see if one is trying to defraud the NCEL. The latex can stick on the numbers and make one think it to be another digit. And my fat fingers will hit a 6 instead of a nine etc and BAM, there's an error code. I was told this happens when one hits the 500 error mark. Try as I may I still do it even when I try to be so careful.

DEEP!,, FYI On the VA #697 there were over 11,000 winners compared to 1924 in NC. Also the VA night drawing only paid out $195,430. It all balances out.

To make it "Easy" to read the Pick Tickets, All you need to do is make the numbers & letter "More Bold" just like is on the ticket already as it say "Lucke-Rewards Entry Code" all need to do is change the format in the program, then you're done!!

well, I received an email saying: give us that ticket that was over scratched that one number could not be read. I replied, I just tossed it away knowing that if I do input it again, it will lock me out again. then I received another email saying, it will take 1-10 business days before the investigation will be completed, so by that time, I lost so many days of input and it will be the end of the month, there goes my chance for the $5,000. drawing....thanks...

Is it authorize to have several people pool together all tickets for input by just one player? Is that the way the second chance is being done. I just wonder why so many players can do so many as much as more than thousands points a day, that means, that player bought tickets for at least $500.00 or more for just one day?, they must be rich....just wondering...even for just 75 entries...?NC Lottery
It is possible for multiple players to enter tickets under one account, but we the lottery only recognize the registered user as a possible winner; sharing a prize would be up to whoever the accountholder is.

Why is it that the second time they locked me out. It is so obvious that just because I am an old lady that most of the time my eyes when blurr when inputting numbers looks like letters...e.g. letter s seems like number 5, letter t seems like 7, or j , etc. I think it is very unfair, to lock me out when I am always eager to input my second change tickets...I think some staff members are not really checking real well how we, the players are doing our daily input of numbers...of course I though the ticket it not a winning one, overlooked the figures, so I just input it for the second chance, then it will say, not recognize, so that triggers my attention, so I double check, just right, it was a winning number, so I re-inputted it. I know being this old I make so many errors as my fingers are tired working and inputting numbers all day long...so at night when I do my input, I easily makes mistakes....I think the Security Group is so unfair to lock me out......

Hello NC Lottery, I wanted to ask if it is possible for you guys to start putting up the odds of winning each prize amount on all of the scratch-off games along with the general overall odds of all games on the main website? I noticed a few other state lotteries doing this method, which I think is a good thing to keep players more informed of they're odds before deciding if they want to risk they're money on tickets. Can someone tell me why the big discrepancy between the payout in Va lottery and NC lottery? Today for instance, both drew the same number 697 and Va paid out almost a million dollars yet NC only $157,000. I've seen this before so could it be players arent feeling the NC lottery number games as much as they are Va? Stop robbing the players NC or you going to lose even more players.NC Lottery
The difference is simple: If more players in North Carolina played the number 697, the payout would have been higher.
