Seven wins of $100,000 to $2 million awarded

A pair of seven-figure lottery wins were among the largest of the week as seven prizes of $100,000 or more were awarded from July 2-10.

Marilyn Fields of Raleigh, a graduate and long-time employee of Shaw University, said a portion of her $2 million Powerball prize would be used to fully fund a scholarship in her family’s name. The North Carolina native, who purchased her lucky Power Play ticket at the Food Lion on Six Forks Road, won the prize by matching all five white balls drawn in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing.

Another Raleigh resident, Louise Hare, was on her way to eat dinner Tuesday night when she cashed in some winning lottery tickets at the Stop 1 Market on Peace Street. While there, she bought a $5 ticket for the $250,000 Cash Money game that won her the top prize of $250,000. “I’m excited about it,” she said. “It gives me the freedom to explore needs in the community, and try to make a difference.”

A Triangle-area homemaker said winning $1 million instantly means she can pay off her mortgage and take a trip to Hawaii. Arneta Belton of Durham bought a $10 ticket for the Millionaire 7’s instant game at the Beaver Pond Family Fare on Roxboro Road. “I was so excited I couldn’t eat or sleep,” Belton said. “It feels great and I’m very happy.”

Across the state in Union County, a newspaper carrier celebrated after winning a $278,448 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot in the nightly drawing held on July 4th. “It feels really cool to win on Independence Day,” said Christopher Young, who lives in Monroe. “I’m going to buy a new car for my wife and one for myself then save the rest for the future.” He purchased the lucky ticket at the Kangaroo Express on Weddington Road in Monroe.

Two hours northwest of Monroe in Caldwell County, a landscaping maintenance worker from Patterson said that scratching off $150,000 means he can finish his home renovations. “I’ve been saving and working on our house for the past eight years,” said Christopher Erskine. “It is a relief to finally be able to finish it for my family.” He purchased his winning ticket at the Cubbard Express on Beecher Anderson Road in Lenoir. {Read Story}

Not far away in Wilkesboro, a local magistrate said she was stunned to win $100,000 instantly playing a Mega Bucks ticket. “It’s awesome that we can help the education programs and have fun at the same time,” said Tyler Roten. “Anything we can do for education is a positive.” She bought the $5 ticket at the P&J Express on U.S. 421 West in Wilkesboro.

The seventh of the week’s biggest wins belonged to Lucila Santana of Winston-Salem. Santana said that some of the $100,000 she won in the Cold Hard Cash game will support her children’s education. “My children are in school so I like to help in any way I can,” Santana said. “It makes me feel good to know lottery money helps education.” Santana was in High Point visiting her brother when she purchased the lucky $5 ticket at the Kivett Drive Grocery on Oneka Street.

In all, lottery players across the state won $19.2 million playing instant games and more than $6.6 million playing draw games, totaling more than $25.8 million in prizes. Fourteen prizes awarded were worth between $10,000 and $79,093. The winners, games they played and the stores where they bought their tickets are:

Discount Tobacco on U.S. 401 South in Louisburg

EARL2212 - The lottery has no way of knowing who will walk into a store and buy a winning lottery ticket. A lottery ticket has no idea if it will be bought by someone who's never played the lottery before, or by someone who's won a big prize in the past. We have no idea if someone has already scratched off a $4M prize playing Multiplier Spectacular or not, all we know is nobody has brought such a ticket to HQ. We do our best to offer a range of games that players enjoy, which is why the lottery is becoming more popular in our state.

what about the same people that have won super BIG twice within a few months time? now explain THAT!oh ya! in the same city/ at the same store.waiting for an answer. Please don't tell me it was just luck. where i am from each time i walk in a store ALL over the city i get a NON-WINNING ticket. i don't just buy at one place i shop around to test the waters. sometime i break even but that's ALL. Somebody knows where these winning tickets are. oh by the way, why hasn't someone won the first 4m on the new 20d ticket. i know for a fact that that ticket is down east some where. ha!and why are the stores in my area are pulling the 500w for life from the stores and they still have 3 Big winning left on them? something is not right about this whole thing.i know people that will go to Va. to play before they play in this state.

Let's hear from Camden, one of northeastern rural counties.....I have been playing since 2008 and not a big winner yet....I know my luck is coming pretty soon..good luck to all players...just keep playing within your means.... have a great a nice day/afternoon/evening...

ok guys get to driving! as you can see and should be able to understand by now that ALL the BIG WINNING tickets are in towns that no one has heard of. and the same people win more then once.check out the latest winner. 100K/2012 now 1million/2014 ready to put your effects in another state? to those on the lucky rewards/ i don't have the money to continue to buy a lot of tickets so i just use 10points at a time because i know that i am not going to win. i just stay in the game because maybe the lottery will hire a college student (during the summer) and they slip up and let me win with just the ten points. ha!ha!NC Lottery
Among the winners in this blog, some were from: Raleigh, Durham, Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Greenville. You've never heard of those cities before?

7/23/2014 12:04 - Reneta M.

Only problem I have is that I am not winning. Every year it seems to be getting worse for me. Their is no response that can help me on that on.NC Lottery
The odds of winning don't get better (or worse) as time goes on. In that sense, every time you play a game, it is a "new game." Each day we encourage folks to only play as long as you're having fun. If you aren't, it might be good to take a break. We wish you the best with all things.

7/19/2014 05:11 - Denver G.

Noel is right! It is Not a tech. problem. You can not entry the new $3 tics that begin with 424. As soon as you put in 424 it say entry invalid, please check your # and try again. I'll just hold on to my tics till lucky zone fixes the problem. A little nudge from you guys might hurry up the fix. NC Lottery
Noel was right and the nudge helped. We did have a glitch with entering non-winning tickets from our new game, Game #424 Casino Crossword, for Lucke-Rewards points. We've checked into it and it should be fixed now. So go ahead and enter those tickets. If you still have trouble, please call (855) 767-1863.

@ LS Gardner - Every instant scratch-off game is audited multiple times to ensure its integrity. After being printed, an instant game undergoes an internal audit by the vendor. Before the game comes to the lottery, by law, the game is audited by an independent CPA firm. Vendors are required to comply with externally-defined security standards and we receive those reports. When the NCEL receives the game, an internal review is done to confirm it meets standards. When the game ends, an internal audit reviews inventory, prize payments and revenue. As part of the lottery’s independent biannual security audit, lottery internal audit staff and an independent firm with lottery expertise visit the lottery’s gaming vendors to review their processes to ensure they meet standards.

Hey to follow up on my last post! I think I'm going to google all them stores in my county and start buying my tickets there. Got to win sooner or later! 10,000 dollars or any big amount will suit me just fine! I'm not greedy like my brother!! Good Luck all! Have a nice week end too! Heading Saturday to the Candor Peach Festival! Y'all come if you live nearby!

7/18/2014 10:07 - Roger K.

Hello all and good morning! I was browsing through the winners board last night, just to see how many winners there was from my county. Got as far 12-2-13 and got sleepy, that's where I stopped. Well so far we have had 3 cash5 winners 2010,2011 and the latest one 2014. So my hopes of winning CASH5 might be far fetched! Two and half year stretch after 2011..2014..Now looking at all the scratch off winners in my county, WOW! there was quite a few of them I see. I see several store have a lot of repeat winners here in my county! Seen a lot of people names repeated too. Some of them at the same store winners and some where at different stores too! I guess they would win at this store, collect their 1,000 after taxes and come back here and buy more around in another stores. The funniest thing is there was only one 5,000 dollar scratch out of all of them. Several 1,000 dollar wins too. Good luck everyone!!

7/18/2014 09:43 - Linda S G.

I too believe that you have to play to win. It seems though that the winning odds are not the way that's printed on the backs of the scratch off tickets, I think the odds should be re-verified. Lately I have bought numerous times 10 $5 tickets (all on one pull), 5 $20 tickets (all in one pull) and not win anything. And yes I play a lot. I used to win often (two years ago - $1000, $1000, several $800, many $400's and a lot of $100's) and preferred the $20 scratch offs but the odds of winning now (even winning just $20) is no longer there the way it used too. When were the odds on the scratch offs last verified?? Are more tickets printed for each game (to increase revenue) and the odds not recalculated?NC Lottery
Please see our separate response a few posts down (we need more space to reply)

Why is the Casino Crossword game ($3 ticket) not accepted for Second Chance drawings? Unable to entry this ticket which begans with number 424.NC Lottery
All non-winning scratch-off tickets are eligible for Lucke-Rewards points. If you are having a technical issue, please call 855-767-1863 to explain.

I've been reading some of the comments being made, some good and some bad. Granted I live in one of those big cities (Fayetteville) and haven't won anything since I've been playing Lucky-Zone. So to all the ones that are complaining about not winning anything I think you (Lucky-Zone) should explain in detail to just how many other players are trying to win at the second chance drawing. Not sure but I think that there must be at least 300,000 or more players. If you haven't won anything like myself, give it time and don't give up! I know that I'm not going to give up! "GOOD LUCK"NC Lottery
We appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts! We do our best to share info with folks, and we'll keep trying to do a better job :)

7/16/2014 08:43 - John J.

I WILL WIN SOON:LOL

7/16/2014 08:01 - Annie M.

I personally do not think it makes a different where you live, the population of you city, or any of those things. If it is your day to win, then you win. If it is not your day, you do not win. The NC Education Lottery can not allow everone who complains about not winning - to win...it is called gambling (sometimes you win...sometimes you don't) not happy don't play someone else will take your winnings...bc if you don't play..you don't win. Stop making some of these useless comments and keep playing.

7/16/2014 06:31 - Teresa H.

when lucke-zone notifies a winner of a drawing by phone. Will lucke zone leave a message if the winner do not answer the phone. Will the number that lucke zone calls from show up on the caller ID as private, lucke-zone or just the number. I am asking because I do not answer phone calls listed as private.NC Lottery
Just make sure to check the e-mail address associated with your Lucke-Zone account, that's where we try first. The staff that calls may or may not leave a message asking you to call back. We also send certified mail if needed.

7/16/2014 12:56 - Barbara K.

Yes!Please do check out the winners as they are as usual in the same places. If you do not live in the larger cities or even out of state you can forget it.You may have a winner in smaller towns once or twice a year but the rest of the time it is in Charlotte, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Greenville. Winston Salem, and larger coastal and western area cities.Do your research. No need for a reply as you will just say the same ole tale and it is getting old.Come up with something new.NC Lottery
We'll come up with a new answer when you come up with a new accusation. It's not EASIER to win in a big place. There are just MORE people taking a chance to win. That doesn't make anyone's odds better or worse!

7/16/2014 08:52 - carolyn b.

could you please add to the page where you see how much you have won....where the winning tickets were bougt and where so we don't have 2 wait till its claimed...just powerball mega millios ans cash 5 plzzzzzzNC Lottery

7/16/2014 12:37 - jason r.

SOOO...is that a YES that my entries are eligible? or NO...stop wasting my time?NC Lottery
The lottery has no way of knowing whether or not you bought the tickets that you enter or found them on the floor at a store that sells tickets. The results of the drawings are random; the more entries, the more chances to win. But just one entry gives you a chance to win. Good luck!

7/15/2014 08:26 - huraish a.

Hello, Can I play and win if Im not a US citizen? I live legally in NC? NC Lottery
You're eligible to win! We have people who live her or are on vacation from other countries that are welcome to buy a lottery ticket and perhaps win a prize! :-)

I have been entering in the luck-zone from the begin of time!....i have never won a thing, to be real i have never seen a winner from landis nc....whatsup with that luck-zone.......good luck to all the that play luck-zone players.....

7/14/2014 04:06 - Natalie M.

Again 99% of winners were middle area of the state, Raleigh, Cary, Greenville, rocky mount. Seems that all or atleast most of winning tickets come from these same areas. I live on oak island at the coast and have been buying tickets for years at different areas in Brunswick and Columbus counties and have never even won $100 bucks! There have been a few winnings in these areas but nothing compared to the constant big wins in the middle and northern parts of the state.NC Lottery
Flat Rock is in the mountains, Greenville is in eastern NC, Fayetteville is in southern NC, Wallace is in southeastern NC, and Sneads Ferry is on the coast. More than 10 million people live in our state, a large percentage of which live in either Charlotte, the Triad or Triangle. It's not easier to win the lottery depending on where you live, some places just have more people taking a chance to win. Good luck!
