Catawba County man scratches off $10,000 instant win

Jim Xiong, a machine operator from Claremont, is the latest North Carolinian to scratch his way to $10,000 playing 50X The Cash.

Xiong and his wife said the felt wonderful as they collected their winnings Wednesday morning at the lottery’s regional claims center in Charlotte. The lucky ticket was purchased at the Murphy USA on North N.C. 16 in Conover. Xiong plans to use his winnings to pay bills.

50X The Cash went on sale on Aug. 6, 2013 with five top prizes of $1,000,000 and 53 prizes of $10,000. As of Wednesday afternoon, only one top prize and one $10,000 prize remain to be claimed.

Xiong is the second big winner of the week from the Charlotte region. Sunday night, Barry Gaines of Kannapolis scratched off a $1 million prize in the $4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular game.

I would like to see a $20 scratch ticket that offers a top prize of $100K. Take the Multiple Spectacular ticket for example. Instead of 14 top prizes of 1 million or better totaling $22 million, the ticket would have 220 top prizes of $100K. Still a longshot, but I'll take the better odds of $100K than the "lightning strike" odds of a million dollar ticket.

Please don’t make it a onetime deal. Most players and LUCKE ZONE subscribers I have spoken to will agree, and rather have a reasonable distribution of your second chance $$ pool. my comment. i and sure a lot of other players think that the people that have won on these 2ND chance drawings they shouldnt be allow to enter anymore2nd chance drawings for at least 2 if not 3 months most all games are out there does this @ interesting to c if you all post this at all that way give all of the people that havent won a little better chance THanks LilybugNC Lottery
The lottery doesn't do anything that would give one player a better chance of winning than another, whether he or she has won before or not. Same with draw games or scratch-off games... Lucke-Zone members are allowed to enter drawings for a chance to win whether they have before or not. Good luck to you!

@ lucke zone...if I do happen to win I understand that the first way you try to contact us is through the email that we signed up with. Will that email come from the NCEL? I understand thru reading the rules and blogs that an independent auditor/contractor is responsible for making sure the drawings are done correctly. When I enter a drawing I always get a confirmation email showing those entries...so I'm assuming that's the same email address that a winning notice would come from. Is that correct?NC Lottery

If a scratch-off prize remains to be claimed, we don't have any idea if someone has scratched it off, thrown it away, is keeping it to bring it in, hasn't bought it yet, or what! :-)

Oh Dear! Once again, several people have hit on Cash 5. Three this time (7/30). More power to 'em, I say. But the day of reckoning is coming. I think it's no longer a question of whether several extra numbers will be added to this game, but a question of when. As I've stated previously, the purpose of the lottery is to raise revenue for the state. Multiple and regular winners will surely bring the day when this lottery will become more difficult to win. It happened in a similar South Carolina lottery a number of years ago. It is bound to happen here if the multiple and more regular winners continues. Don't think so? Just stick around a while and be patient. It's coming.

On 07/27/14 - 10:02 am I entered 50 Entries (Entry # 57206911) for the "Five for $500 Drawing"; with the drawing date to be 07/30/14. On 07/30/2014 at 7:02:33 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time I received notification for thanking me for my entry. If I'm not mistaken; notification of my entry acceptance took place hours after the drawing. I humbly request my 500 entry points be transferred and entered in the 08/06/14 "Five for $500.00 Drawing".NC Lottery

On wins of $5,000+, the lottery is required to withhold federal taxes of 25% and state taxes of 5.8% ... so that means a $10,000 prize has an after-tax value of $6,920 :-)

People seem to be having better luck on scratch offs than NC Pick 4. You would think more people would win on the pick 4 but how can they when NC Lottery draws the ugliest Pick 4s I've ever seen. No wonder they are only paying out $15,000 for the whole state in a Pick 4 drawing. Where are the more common combinations? Looks like its fixed to bring out the least payout number.NC Lottery
The results of Pick 4 drawings are random, we can't help if the numbers look pretty to you or not. The size of the payout is a reflection of how many players happened to pick the winning numbers or not. We can't and will never do anything to affect the outcome of the random drawings.
