First $1 million wins of December are tops last week

Before we rewind the biggest wins of the week, here is a look at the multistate jackpots heading into the weekend.

Friday's Mega Millions jackpot weighs in at $66 million ($40.7 million cash). Saturday's Powerball jackpot stands at $164 million ($99.6 million cash). We've always got our fingers crossed a North Carolina player brings home another jackpot to our state.

Speaking of Powerball, John Bell of Charlotte matched four white balls and the red Powerball in Wednesday's drawing, winning $50,000.

Two players who won $1 million claimed their prize money. Frances Witten says some folks in her hometown of Laurinburg call her the luckiest woman they've ever seen. After winning $1 million playing Ultimate Millions, you could say the Scotland County woman earned the title. The second $1 million winner is Ramin Karimpour of Raleigh. He bought his lucky $1,000 Mayhem ticket at the Quality Mart on South Miami Boulevard in Durham.

A Union County man is the first to win the $200,000 top prize in the Gold 7's game. Michael Michalski of Waxhaw bought his winning ticket at the Harris Teeter on Albemarle Road in Charlotte.

Another Waxhaw player, Bobby Tindall, was one of five players to win $50,000 instantly. He won playing 5X Crossword. The other $50,000 winners are:

- Brian Bradley of Greensboro (50X The Cash)
- Joshua Gazoo of Rockingham (Peppermint Payout)
- Michael Mizelle of South Mills (Peppermint Payout)
- Christina Dunn of Concord ($200 Million Blowout)

We had seven more winners scratch their way to prizes of $10,000 to $30,000:

- Tanisha Brooks of Charlotte: $30,000 (Lucky Dog)
- Sarbjit Singh of Morrisville: $20,000 ($4,000 Multiplier Spectacular)
- Stanley Barkley of Morrisville: $10,000 ($4,000 Multiplier Spectacular)
- Stacy Happer of Wilson: $10,000 ($4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular)
- Linda Bryson of Greensboro: $10,000 (100X The Cash)
- Emeterio Garcia of Sanford: $10,000 (100X The Cash)
- Jacqueline Stogner of Charlotte: $10,000 ($200 Million Blowout)

I have noticed at one convenience store where the clerks save winning tickets that other customers cash in to give to one particular customer. I assume if the customer wins the second chance drawing the customer will split the prize with the clerks. My son once entered the store to cash in a winning instant game ticket. I followed as through we were not together. I watched clerk cashed in his ticket and put the cashed in ticket in a bag. After receiving his cash, I whispered to my son to ask for his ticket back. The clerk looked around as through looking for the ticket and finally said the ticket had been thrown in the trash. Even through I had scanned the winning ticket into the second chance drawing before entering the store, I still feel winning tickets should not be allowed in the second chance drawing. If a player wants to enter tickets in the second chance drawing the tickets should be losing tickets or dumpster driving if so be.

I see that particular store owner in Sanford winnings for this Dec. are now on pages 20 and 21 under the winners board list for the Instant scratch offs. ( dates are all Dec. 11th, 2015 ) Winners were updated shortly after I made my initial post so that moved his down to those pages, if anyone cares to see . Also, I have not personally SEEN something suspicious going on at any retail location, this was a simple observation on my part so I really have no legit reason to CALL the hotline. One lucky fellow, all I have to say.....

Retailers can also prob. figure out a way to tamper with the tickets...just saying . ( Like Claude was saying about the store in Durham ) Very ironic for ONE STORE OWNER IN SANFORD to win that much and all his winnings were listed ( that I've found so far ) in the month of December....when money is needed the most, for most. I'm letting you all know here, n/t to call the hotline and from now on I'll be buying my tickets out of a machine !! Merry Christmas !

Response to PLAYER's Comment above. Retailers in North Carolina can play the lottery and win prizes as they can in all other states with lotteries. One reason that information about who wins is public is so that anyone can see who the winners are. We hope everyone who plays Pick 4 understands that each drawing is an independent event and in each drawing any set of four numbers have the odds of 1 in 10,000 of being drawn. Quads are popular numbers that are picked, but the odds of 4-4-4-4 or 5-5-5-5 are the same as 1-2-3-4 or 5-6-7-9. Everyone's numbers should have the same chance of being drawn in each drawing. That's our standard.

Claude, I was just looking over the instant scratch off winners last night on the NCEL website. I noticed one particular store owner ( found that out by googling his name and the word lottery ) in Sanford won 1 mil. back in 2014 ( scratch off ticket ) and has at least 3 1,000 winnings listed for him ( scratch offs again ) in this month alone. You can see that on page 2 of the NCEL winner instant winners page , he won at... and owns... the value mart there. Just stuck out like a sore thumb when you see ONE person mentioned 3 times on the same page and he IS a store owner too, also...very few winnings actually happen in Sanford. He may have won more times than mentioned above, will do some through the archives when I have more time. I most definately need a tax write off, I have put in thousands and have not won nothing to talk about. Thomasville NC retailers have nothing in their money eating stores. Pick 3 and 4 will eat your wallet up, thats where I lost my money for 5 years and I am mad because I never received anything back playing. What lottery does that. Why does it take years for some numbers and ever year the same ones come out. You are awful and you know and it.

5XCHAMPS is correct. You have to read the small print from the NCEL and the Multi-State Lottery Commission closely. If you play the lotteries or scratch-offs, don't spend what you can't afford to lose. And as far as buying those $30 tickets thinking the odds are better, remember that they have printed nearly 16 MILLION of them. That's $478,800,000 in revenue - payout $353,000,000 = $125+ million in profit. I know the ticket says $373 million in prizes, but the 4 top $10 million dollar prizes are annuities with a cash value of about $5 million right now. Know your numbers going in, and you won't be disappointed. NC Lottery
As 1TRICKPONY says, we share a lot of information so folks can make good decision when playing games of chance. We don't have profits, however. All the money we raise goes to education. And ticket info is correct. The $373 million represents the cash value of all prizes in the game. It would be higher if we used the annuity value, but we don't.

someone asked the question why were the games ending before the top prize was won, well the answer is simple. there is NO TOP PRIZE!!!! look at how long the 5k a wk for life($10 ticket) has been without a winner of the last prize. the lottery knows, they know.the same for the 2.5wk for life($5 ticket). if you notice that no real POOR PEOPLE win big prizes. everybody has a really good job or retired. please don't tell me it's just luck.

Folks, let’s keep in mind that the NCEL is a business, first and foremost. In fact, it is as near to a ‘perfect’ business as any in the World. Their job is to generate revenue and create profits. People ask me all the time if I suggest playing the lottery. I respond that if they don’t mind handing $20 to a clerk and getting two pieces of cardboard in return and if that does not eat away at them, then play away. The NCEL recently got an earful from the legislators as their sales numbers to date are not where they were promised to be. Right now the NCEL is in a mode of generating revenue, hence the introduction of the $30 card. Play in Feb and March and April. Refunds start rolling in and the cards always start hitting better as the lottery wants to get new business with that money so they put more winners out there. You have to study the lottery as there are more to it than just luck. Educate yourself on how they do business. It is easy to see if you look close enough.

Every part of the state wins its fair share. Less than 10% of North Carolinians live in the mountains. So it's not harder to win west of Charlotte - there are just more people in Charlotte and eastward taking a chance to win :)

can we get rid of the "WINNERS" from the list that are over two years old now? You couldn't collect them at this point, so why are they still there? Going from 3 million holiday winnings to 250 of Papa John pizza, it is pretty sad how the lottery has reduced "Lucky" Rewards to a sad caricature of what it started out as.

There are many reasons that can factor into the decision to end a game. Often it is that all the top prizes are remaining. But also the popularity of a game, how long it has been on sale and what new games are coming out are other reasons that can factor into the decision.

Don't know what is going on at Family Fare across from Duke Medical Center in Durham, but this morning I purchased 2 Merry Mega Bucks and both had a scratch straight down the center of all the numbers. You could see if a 5X or a $ was in the space was in the space or not. Looked strange to me. So do we have an employee that is looking for winners from the 5X or the $ sign? Well we watched all the $10.00 tickets sold yesterday morning at the coffee table and we had 17 tickets sold in about a hr. One winning ticket at it was a BIG $15.00 WOW 5 dollor profit. Something is vey wrong wit the Lotter in N. C. What is the pick 4 all about? Where are the instructions on how to play, not the instructions that you give. Question, is the numbers computer generated? What is the game. I still play the scratch -off tickets,but have notice a decline in winners(breaking even is not winning).I have express my displeasure at dollar amounts being below the cost of the ticket but multiplier gives you a winner.The winning odds should not include break even prizes, which gives you a better chance at picking winning tickets to buy.This is not to be a sour grapes comment, just something that the Lottery should make note of for the future. I agree with what Pappy101 wrote; I've been playing since the lottery started, and have yet to win over $250 on a ticket, and that was only one time. I was wondering if in the audit process, they show how many winning tickets over say $500 are won in a given area versus the amount of tickets sold in that area? I mean for the amount of tickets sold in a large metro like Charlotte, where I live, most of my friends and people that I talk to, have the same experience very little wins. I know the NCEL is a business just like any other, to achieve profit and goals, but when I take road trips out of state and play, I do so much better, and at least break even.

Instead of putting such large amount in just a very few winners on these scratch offs, why don't you put more games out that offer majority of the prizes at the $500-1000 level, so more people have better chances of winning something other than $10-20 instead of one to 4 people getting all the $$$ --I think most people would agree, especially those of us who play a lot of scratch offs, the chances of winning any thing significant are slim to none for 98-99% of players !!! pretty sad in my eyes

Sorry, not sure what you mean. Most scratch-off games do not have a second-chance drawing, let alone a daily drawing. The lottery holds daily drawings for Pick 3, Pick 4 and All or Nothing every afternoon and Pick 3, Pick 4, Cash 5 and All or Nothing every night.

For years, I have found myself getting up very early in the mornings to play the online Mega Millions and Powerball games. I make sure that i purchase my tickets at very specific times. Call me superstitious or something, but, i have always believed that if i play this way, I might be able to guarantee a big win. A sure thing. I am so frustrated with scratchoff tickets and have been for awhile. None of the regular players are winning anything other the price of the ticket if you are lucky enough to win that! I have probably bought over 50 tickets this week and NOTHING! I say the lottery should be banned in this greedy state!
