If giving lottery tickets as gifts, please give responsibly

Lottery tickets can be a fun gift or stocking stuffer for adults. But, since this is the season of giving, help us remind all players that they are not appropriate gifts for teens or children. Just as you wouldn’t put an underage person behind the wheel of a car you shouldn’t give someone under 18 a lottery ticket.

That’s why each holiday season we join a campaign sponsored by the National Council on Problem Gambling and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at McGill University to discourage lottery tickets as gifts for minors. Raising awareness is important because research shows some problem gamblers report beginning gambling during childhood – as early as 9-10 years of age.

Our efforts to prevent underage play of lottery tickets go on year-round. We print a reminder of the restriction on lottery sales to minors on every lottery ticket sold and on advertising and marketing materials. The bold “You Must Be 18 Years Of Age To Play” reminder goes on the top of the back of instant tickets. We train lottery retailers to check IDs before selling lottery tickets and join state law enforcement agencies in enforcing the no sales to a minor law.

Finally, about $1 million in lottery revenues go each year to support the N.C. Problem Gambling Program. The program provides free treatment to anyone who develops a gambling problem and provides an evidence-based gambling prevention program to middle school and high school students in the state. For further information on the N.C. Problem Gambling Program, call the helpline at 1-877-718-5543 or visit www.morethanagamenc.com.

Best wishes to everyone this holiday season.

As I now gave more thought about the prize money of $25,000 Holiday Shopping Spree Drawing. I would spread the joy even more, I would spread it out to 100 people, that would the people $250.oo worth of cash in there pocket! The idea of the game is to "spread it out to more winners" If you have more Happier Winners, and then You'll have more happier Players!

It's sad when you guys wasting $1million dollars to support gambling programs. It's simple STOP PLAYING PERIOD. Nowadays all you see on tv is NC LOTTERY commercials and the radios. "My question to you guy is where's this extra money coming from?" The print out on your games aren't accurate so why sell a dream on luck..? Hey I'm just speaking my mind you don't have to post this. Thanks!! LolNC Lottery
The legislature mandated that $1 million in lottery revenue each year goes to the program for treatment and counseling. 95% of lottery revenue goes to prizes, earnings for education, and commissions to retailers for selling tickets.

$25,000 Holiday Shopping Spree Drawing, looks like a joke in a way? All for only 1 winner, If it was my idea, I would have it spread out where to have 25 winners for the $25,000. (Give each winner a $1,000.) Now that's How to spread out the Holiday Season! If you spread out more winnings to more people, then more people will be happier to keep playing!

What exactly does 1 million dollars do in the way of a gambling addiction program for the citizens of North Carolina? I ask this question because I have heard that the majority of the money pays some very large salaries for persons within "problem gambling program." I really hope this is not the case. Why should a lottery organization skim cash off the net revenue for a program it has a direct impact upon? Duke Power never pays for their pollution or problems until they are taken to court. What amount/percentage of cash taken into the NC lottery is required to be returned in the form of winnings ? Thank you for clarification.NC Lottery
