The biggest lottery win in North Carolina history was one of the most talked-about news stories of the week. But, besides the $188 million Powerball ticket sold in Shallotte, players across the state scratched and matched their way to more than $32 million in prizes this week, including four seven-figure wins.
A Raleigh man became the latest player to scratch off $4 million playing the $4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular game. “It’s life-changing, I’m sure,” Reginald Miller said. “It’s basically going to fund my retirement.” Miller bought the lucky ticket at the JC Mart on Louisburg Road in Raleigh.
Two $1 million wins came when Powerball tickets sold in the Triangle and Triad matched all five white balls in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. The tickets, which beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to win, were sold at the Quality Mart on Beryl Road in Raleigh and at the Food Lion on East Market Street in Greensboro. Neither prize has been claimed. Winners have 180 days from the date of a drawing to collect their winnings.
A third $1 million prize belongs to is Kelly Gainey, a carpenter from Salisbury. He said he’d use the prize money he won playing the Millionaire 7’s game to buy a home, a truck and to travel across the United States. “I’ve been almost everywhere in the country,” Gainey said. “Now that I have the money, I’m going to Hawaii, Alaska, Utah and Montana. And I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.”
North Carolina’s jackpot game, Carolina Cash 5, made a machinist from Trinity $168,259 richer. Douglas Beasley was at home drinking a cup of coffee when he saw his numbers appear on WGHP’s morning news broadcast. “I guess it was just my lucky day,” Beasley said. “I’m going to pay off some bills and take a nice long fishing trip on the coast. It feels pretty amazing.”
