From mountains to coastal plain, players win $30 million

Thanks to the ACC Tournament, the second week of March in North Carolina is always a chance to celebrate the excitement of college basketball. For lucky lottery players this year it was also a time to celebrate the fun of winning $30 million in prizes statewide.

Nowhere in North Carolina happened to be luckier than McDowell County. Russell Guffey, a sales representative from Nebo, won $1 million on a $200 Million Blowout ticket, making him the third McDowell County winner of $1 million or more this month.

Staying in the western region, a hairdresser from Hudson in Caldwell County can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style this year thanks to the new “Lucky Green” game. Tamera Nichols is the first player to win a $30,000 top prize in the $2 game.

Dennis Brown of Waynesville, located near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, won $50,000 instantly playing 100X The Cash.

But it wasn’t just the mountains where folks beat the odds; the Piedmont region had a $1 million winner, too. Saturday night, Daniel Allen of Waxhaw in Union County became the sixth North Carolina Powerball player to win $1 million this year.

Nearby in Charlotte, a retired airline mechanic won his second Cash 5 jackpot in five years. After winning $773,609 in April of 2010, John Grabski won $424,168 in Tuesday’s drawing. Two other Charlotte players claimed $10,000 apiece this week. Stephen Dunlap and Alan Price won playing 100X The Cash and 20X The Cash, respectively.

Not far away in Cabarrus County, a trio of players from Concord managed to win $10,000 each – all on different tickets in the new “X The Cash” family of games. Mike Kale won playing 5X The Cash, Christine Filippi won playing 50X The Cash and David Clark won playing 100X The Cash.

Just minutes north, John Haigler of Kannapolis won $20,000 on a $1,000,000 Jackpot ticket.

Heading east and close to the South Carolina border in Wadesboro, Edward Little landed $10,000 playing 100X The Cash. And south of the Triangle in Moore County, Donna Moore of Cameron scratched her way to $10,000 on a $4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular ticket.

Eastern North Carolina also had several big winners. Earlina Robinson of Mount Olive in Wayne County won the top prize of $200,000 playing 20X The Cash. She bought her lucky ticket at the Arrington Mart on Bill Lane Boulevard in Dudley.

Two Fayetteville players claimed big prizes. Dorethea Caldwell of Fayetteville had one of three tickets to match all five numbers in the Feb. 28 drawing, winning her a $52,516 share of the $157,548 jackpot, and Michael Ratcliffe won $50,000 playing 50X The Cash.

Six more players in the coastal plains region won big prizes instantly. They are:

  • Catina Cox of Wilson: $50,000 (Casino Crossword)
  • Patsy Lynch of Hollister: $30,000 ($30,000 Payday!)
  • Simmie Bryant of Clinton: $30,000 (Red Hot 5’s)
  • Jimmy Harrison of Lumberton: $10,000 (5X The Cash)
  • Joyce West of Newton Grove: $10,000 (20X The Cash)
  • Misty Bridges of Red Springs: $10,000 (100X The Cash)

In all, instant players won $24.6 million and draw game players added $5.4 million more.

Whatever team you root for or whatever part of our state you live in, we hope you have a great weekend. See you soon here in the Lucke-Zone.

I don't play as often as I use to, however I did get lucky once with a $1000 win in 2009. I decided to give scratch offs a shot once more. Well to my surprise I was very, very disappointed. I just think it's awful when you spend $100 and don't even win $1.

I JUST GOT ME ANOTHER Cash5 WIN!! The fisherman from that insurance commercial cast his line out and I "got me another dollar"! I've never gotten more than two number matches...pathetic. I would like to echo what 'Sailfish' said. I'm aware that there's big winners in scratch-offs, but when I look in the trash cans of convenience stores and see piles of non-winning $5, $10, and $20 scratch-offs...right there tells me plenty about buying them. I entered 102 entries in one of the Lucke-Rewards drawings...ask me what I won. I'll give you three guesses and the first two won't count!

Why isn't the xcash drawing winners on 3/04/2015 not posted

Im very hopeful for a big win. If I win a big lottery, I will give back to my community and retire early,..then scare away my family, I daydream about it often to the point that it seems like a future reality. Stay positive and Blessed. :)

I stopped playing the lottery sometime ago and it's the best thing I have done.Just throwing hard earned money away.Morning paper reads North Carolina last among states in lottery profits per capita but turned over $503 million to school system last year. Most importantly to those who buy tickets N.C. ranked last at 60.62 percent in payouts.N.C could increase its prize money to the buyers and not hurt its profits. Increasing payouts is recommend slowly over time as it is the lowest in six states and Georgia being the highest. The failure of the Monopoly Millionaires Club isn't helping this year but they still hope to reach $520 million for education this year.I am all for helping education but it is past time to help the player if not for them they would have no lottery.

The mobile app really , really needs a 'BACK' button. Navigation is cumbersome when readin blog. To read comments you have to goto new page. Then back to blog home and start scrolling through pages to get back to place you left. Your business analysts QA is lacking. How much did lottery spend to develop & test app? Did you even accept bids or was the application developed in house?NC Lottery
We appreciate you taking time to give us feedback, which will be passed along. A third-party vendor was chosen to develop the app.

2015 is my year im a more active player scary sometimes but i put in my fair share knowing there is a god who will not let me suffer. Im new to this beautiful state of opportunity but looks like durham county is not the big player area. Ive switched to scratch offs or sweepstakes which ive won more there. i do agree with wondering how to fraction there points out. i had no idea some had 9000+ points but please send more top prizes to durham (south east).

I also just purchased a Monopoly ticket at Food Lion in Greenville. Thanks for answering the question. I also would like to know if this is a new game, or will our tickets that we had for the last cancelled game count?

To "ALWAYSLOSING": Here is a little I tell you so details below from prior BLOG: Your WIN did come in 2015. On 1/02/2015 01:54, ALWAYSLOSING said: REALLY.I know everyone says I should have won by now but over 100,000 points and nothing.WOW.just to see repeat winners like Reginold Payne,AGAIN.we should get to see the winners entries.my fraction of a percent should have paid off by now.THOUSANDS of entries.I've put ALOT of pointless work on here in the past 2 years..was sure it would have paid off by now...silly me.. On 1/02/2015 07:38, SCORPIONKING said: To ALWAYSLOSING. Maybe if you change your name to "ALWAYSWINNING" something big will come your way. It's all about LUCK. Your time will come in 2015. Hang in there.

3/16/2015 03:19 - Daphne W.

Congratulation to all the winners. I buy scratch offs everyday and don't win no more then what I paid for. For the drawings on luck e zone I don't win those either and I have put in 95 entries one time didn't win NOTHING! So after I use the remaining points I'm closing my account.

If you had properties from the last MMC game, they should carry over to the new scratch-off game. Best of luck!

3/16/2015 02:38 - Kim C.

Thanks Always Losing!! Need all the inside info I can get lol. Like you, I have been entering a long time, without seeing any luck. I am going to win soon, I can "feel" it lol. Genuinely happy that you finally won!!!

3/16/2015 02:08 - vicky a.

So do you have to have alot of points To win anything. Ive been playing since the Beginning and nothing. I dnt let my points get to high I play them as soon as possible.

3/16/2015 12:58 - Raymond E.

I just purchased three $5 Monopoly Millionaire from Food Lion in Winston Salem about 30 min. ago game #455 and I cannot enter second chance, I have checked and double checked my numbers but they says re check the numbers. I've tried all 3 tickets. NC Lottery

Lumberton,North Carolina is the next big winner I declare in decree its mines

3/16/2015 07:28 - norman b.

What is the average amount of entries for winners it is hard to believe that as many entries as I have entered and never won anything. NC Lottery
We don't keep track of the average number of entries, but it's good to keep in mind that there are more than 300,000 active players in the Lucke-Zone. Still, it only takes one lucky entry to win a prize!

3/16/2015 06:26 - Robert M.

I have noticed that too about our area in the triangle and triad with very few winners. I have been playing for years and never win more than $100.With our area being so populated you would think we would have more big winners?? Just sayinNC Lottery
We've had tons of winners from the Triad and Triangle areas.NC Lottery
For example, last fiscal year alone, Wake County players won more than $10.5 million and Guilford County players won more than $7.5 million. It isn't easier or harder to win the lottery depending on where you live. Everyone has the same odds, there are just more folks taking a chance to beat the odds in higher-population places :)

3/15/2015 10:35 - Linda M.

still waiting for my turn!

3/15/2015 09:21 - Marcus B.

I'm still believing. Haven't won yet though. I'm happy to see others winning but I swear if/when I win I would truly appreciate it & utilize my winnings wisely.

3/15/2015 05:07 - Carol H.

Do you have a list of winners from Graham County?NC Lottery
We had four active lottery retailers in all of Graham County last year. Players from Graham County won $234,395. Since 2006, education programs in Graham County have received more than $3.1 million in lottery funds.

3/15/2015 04:38 - James R.

Well congrats to them all! Meanwhile, I'm playing my lucky number EVERYDAY so hopefully I'm next!!??

3/15/2015 04:14 - James S.

3/15/2015 08:02 - Octavia J.

No big winners from my area yet. Maybe one day.

3/15/2015 03:28 - Schafner H.

The ratio of winners in the western portion of the state seems much higher than that of the central portion of the state. Very few big winners in Durham County as compared to Charlotte. NC Lottery
Durham Co only has 1/4 of the population of Mecklenburg Co, so there are a lot more players buying tickets every day down there. That said, scratch-off players in Durham have won 12 prizes from $5,000 to $150,000 in 2015 so far.

3/15/2015 02:21 - deborah c.

Martin county never win anything with this lottery Martin county is a 1 tier county it could use some of this moneyNC Lottery
We've definitely had big winners from Martin County. In fact, we had a $200,000 winner just a couple weeks ago: http://bit.ly/1MJpsiI

3/14/2015 10:58 - Kim C.

ALWAYS LOSING.....happy to hear you finally won a drawing. Question for you, how did you enter your "close to 9000 points"? I mean did you enter them all or most at one time or stagger them with like a few everyday? You are one of the first I have seen be open about your entries once you actually won. I am very appreciative, thanks

3/14/2015 09:26 - belinda g.

if i won a large amt i would first give half to my mom she plays more than i do .second i would go on a much needed vacation with my husband and family ,then i would pay off all my debts .

3/14/2015 06:18 - scarlet r.

you never hear of any big scratch off winners in Johnston county either I think the lottery people know where all the big tickets are going and were the winners will be. NC Lottery
Johnston County has a number of big winners, including seven Cash 5 jackpots from $47,453 to $386,019 and six scratch-off prizes from $100,000 to $1 million.

3/14/2015 04:17 - EBONE P.
