As we turn the page to the month of August, here's a look at the biggest wins for the last week of July.
The biggest winner of the week is Chapel Hill resident Cynthia Murphy. She scratched her way to $1 million on a $4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular ticket she bought at the Calvander Food Mart on Dairyland Road in Chapel Hill.
Two players who split the $461,844 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot in the July 24 drawing came to lottery headquarters to claim their prize money. Raleigh retiree Michael Gyurko and Hickory resident Dennis Young won $230,992 apiece.
Another Cash 5 jackpot winner, Winston-Salem resident Shirley Mathis, also collected her winnings. Mathis matched all five numbers in the July 14 drawing to win the $172,673 jackpot.
Robert Gawlik of Durham said he is ecstatic to win $150,000 on a ticket for the Win It All Game. He plans on using his winnings to pay bills, purchase a new Chevy or Ford truck, help loved ones, and take a golf vacation to the mountains or Myrtle Beach.
A Lincoln County man's weekly tradition of buying a lottery ticket every time he stops for gas paid off when his $5 Mega Bucks ticket turned into a $100,000 prize. William Alvey of Lincolnton was in his truck when he scratched the ticket. “My first thought was, ‘Oh my God,’” Alvey recalled. “When I knew I had won, I drove straight home to show my wife. She was so excited.”

Are all winning amounts and prizes subject to taxes or is there a minimum threshold before taxes are implemented on winnings? Thanks in advance
