First N.C. ticket wins $1,000 a Day for Life

Exciting news, everyone: For the first time since Lucky for Life came to our state in February, a ticket sold in North Carolina has won the game's top prize of $1,000 a Day for Life.

At $365,000 a year for the rest of the winner's life, that could add up to $10 million, $15 million or more.

The winning ticket was sold at the Fast Stop #2 on Andrews Street in Salisbury.

Big Winners

The winning numbers were 4-5-9-28-37 for the white balls and 14 for the gold Lucky Ball.

The winner has the option to claim the prize as a lump sum of $5.75 million. The annuity prize is guaranteed for at least 20 years to the winner’s estate or heirs. But the annuity payments will continue for the rest of the winner’s life.

In the nine months since Lucky for Life tickets went on sale here, nine North Carolina players have won the game’s second prize of $25,000 a Year for Life and 71 more have won $5,000 prizes.

We're looking forward to meeting the winner. Good luck to everyone in the next drawing on Monday night - there's no rule that says we can't have top prize winners in back-to-back drawings :-)

Is there an option for a single winner to split the winnings by taking $500 per day and the remainder as a lump sum? ...asking for a friend ??

Great question, Dion. If you were to win the top prize from Lucky for Life and claim as a group, the group must all take the cash option. However, you could claim as an individual and then split it up after tax however you wish.

I tried your former month's gimmick- Buy 4 Powerball plays, get one lucky for life quick pick ticket free. All I won was a couple of break-even prizes for matching the Lucky ball. I see how it works here- NCEL rakes in all the money during the buy 4 get one free period, meanwhile no one wins any substantial prize during your gimmick period. Additionally, all your new introductory games have sucker prizes of $100 or $200 to get players hooked in your bait. Then the next roll of tickets have break-even prizes only, and after a couple of months or so, the switch, there's no prize at all.NC Lottery
We can assure you that you had the same chance to win as anyone else. If playing the lottery is not fun for you, we would rather you take a break than have a bad experience. It takes luck to win whether you play often or once in a while, whether you live in a place big or small.

This is good to know and an important question many wonder about, sure would be nice if our state law would allow ALL of the info. to remain anon. though...would make it safer for the really big time winners ! After initial required withholdings, the $5.7 million lump sum is worth $3.9 million. The after-tax value of the $365,000 annuity payment is $252,762.

The $1,000 a Day for Life prize is awarded in annuity payments of $365,000 a year -- $366,000 in leap years :-)

So if you are notified that you have won do you have to accept it to be put on the web site ? And if it says winner notified for a long time dose that mean the winner never got back to you ? So you should have picked another winner ...that makes sense to me I,m trying to win if they don't want it.NC Lottery
Before a winner's name is posted on the website, he or she has to first respond to the nofification and then complete the claim process, either by mail or in person at one of our claim centers. If a winner does not complete the claim process within 30 days of being notified the prize is awarded to an alternate winner chosen at random in the drawing.

The $5.7 million is the size of the prize before taxes. After initial required withholdings it becomes worth $3.9 million. On the second prize, the lump sum is $390,000 and $270,075 after taxes.
