Prizes up for grabs in ‘Scratch Madness’ tournament

It’s every college basketball fan’s favorite time of the year. And while we celebrate our state’s great hoops tradition, we’re holding a tournament of our own. It’s called Scratch Madness. And you’re invited.

Between March 14 and April 4, just for voting on our Facebook posts to decide which instant game is best, you could win $50 worth of your favorite scratch-off tickets!

But instead of the winning ticket taking home the trophy at the end of the tournament, lottery players will get the glory: Whichever scratch-off advances to the final round and emerges victorious in the voting will be worth 10X the Lucke-Rewards points for the remainder of the month of April.

Now that you know what’s at stake, it’s time to reveal the selection committee’s Scratch Madness Tournament brackets with tickets seeded 1 through 16, giving us eight scratch-off-to-scratch-off match-ups for the first round.

Let’s take a look at the Blue Ridge Bracket, featuring top-seeded Ultimate Millions taking on the upset-minded Mighty Bucks:

Here’s a quick breakdown of the calendar and how voting and notification of winners will work:

• Starting Monday for eight consecutive weekdays, Round 1 match-ups will be posted on our Facebook page. For each, we’ll tally up the votes to determine which ticket wins – and which lucky fan is chosen at random to win $50 in scratch-off tickets. Winners will be posted in a blog after each round. We’ll invite the winners to contact us by e-mail to provide proof of age so we can provide more info about how to claim.

• Each day you can vote between noon and 8 p.m. for which ticket you’d like to see advance to the next round. Only one vote per person, per match-up during a given entry period will be eligible. Promotion Rules.

• On the day before Good Friday we’ll announce the eight tickets that advanced from Round 1 to the Elite 8 – and which eight voters won prizes. The next round will begin the day after Easter and conclude just in time to announce our Final Four on Friday April, 1 – the eve of the actual Final Four semifinal basketball games.

• The Scratch Madness Final Four match-ups will take place on Saturday and Sunday. And, on Monday, April 4 – the same day a basketball champion is crowned in the title game – we’ll hold the last round of voting to decide which ticket is king of this year’s Scratch Madness tournament. The $50 winners from the Final Four and Scratch Madness Championship match-up will be announced the next day.

So, remember: Not only are we looking forward to having fun and 15 winners getting $50 worth of free scratch-off tickets – whichever ticket wins it all will be worth 10X the points for the rest of April.

So the lottery people are telling me it's correct to call a face value ticket a "winner" and lump that in with the odds of winning a prize?? That's not a shady practice to make it sound much better than it actually is to sell more tickets?? We should thank you for actually costing us money if you count the gas used to go back to redeem a ticket for the exact amount we bought it for? Every lottery considers winning the ticket price back a winning ticket - it gives you another chance to win at no extra charge. That's a valuable prize - it could be worth a lot more! Please only play games of chance knowing it takes luck to beat the odds.

Don't fall for the "higher percentage of paying out than ever" stuff...if you remove breakeven prizes, the payouts drop DRASTICALLY...I'm so sorry, but giving me my exact money right back can not be considered "winning" at all and you lotto people know it...get rid of the ridiculous breakeven prizes and put that money into actual WINNING tickets...it's all a trap when it's set up as shady as it is right now...a scam to take money from people that see the large payout prizes and dream of a better life that would result from it...then they see a winning scratch only to find out it is for the exact amount of money they paid for the ticket in the first place...that's cruel is what it is...now we're insulted with a prize of tickets that we already know we won't win anything off of except maybe face value of $1 off a $1 ticket...there are even $5 tickets that have a $3 payout...seriously?? A "winning" ticket where you LOSE $2?? Come on now...

I find it funny how the money goes to education and I see hundreds and thousands spent by people all the time, yet my cousin doesn't even get books for all his classes and teachers are being laid off...don't be fooled like I have been...done with this money put that I never see anyone win anything from...asany people as I know that play, there would have been at least someone to win something decent...I'm sure this post won't get through the lotto censors...free speech is dead

For prizes of $600 to $5000, the lottery is required to withhold state taxes of 5.75%. It would be up to you to report the prize money as income on your taxes to pay any obligation to the federal government.

I keep reading about people complaining that the aren't winning. If they aren't happy, then they should stop playing and save their money. You have to know that the odds are not in your favor when you gamble and you should never gamble with money you cannot afford to lose. Be happy with any with, and don't complain if you don't win a contest. Be happy if you do, but don't begrudge the next guy he happiness for winning. If you are meant to win, you will, whether it be with one entry or one hundred. Have faith. I haven't won, but I have faith.

Folks, 16000 (160,000 points) entries was not enough to get it done in the $2500 Winning Wednesdays drawing. I suspect I was around 100,000 entries short of a chance to win. As far as entering points on LZ, I regret wasting all the time I did on it. Regarding scratchoffs, my advice is to stay in the ‘Bucks’ family or cards as their odds are somewhat similar to the odds offered a few years ago when the lottery was still playable. The exception being the newer $20 ‘Millionaire Bucks’ card. It is a thief for sure, beware of it. Play smart, study the odds on each individual ticket and study the NCEL as you can pick up on things. I wish all the Lucky Zone members the very best of luck and I hope you guys hit the big one that I tried so hard to get through the years. God bless.

Folks, Just so you know, I put 16000 entries (that is 160,000 points, all I had and had saved for a very long time) into the $2500 Winning Wednesday contest as I am not enjoying playing the lottery anymore and I am ready to move on. I really don't think they are scamming anyone at all but I think to offer more prizes would be very nice indeed, even if it's just break even winning tickets. Have often heard that other states ( VA. especially ) indeed do have more winning tickets . Many folks will tell ya, if you want to win something head across that state line to buy your tickets. Nice I guess if you live close to the Va. state line. lol

But with games of chance, the reason a ticket could be worth much more than the cost of the ticket is because non-winning tickets is where prize money comes from. Every day we're posting a match-up on our Facebook page. All you have to do is vote for one game or the other between noon and 8pm that day and you'll be entered for a chance to win.

@ CHOCOLATECHIP - We didn't mean for the response to sound curt, you just had a lot of questions and since you found the rules we thought you had the info you needed. When you went to our Facebook page last night, the very first post at the top of the page is the #1 Ultimate Millions vs. #16 Mighty Bucks match-up for Monday, and it asks you to vote for one game or the other. The post below that, from Sunday night, is telling folks about the promotion starting Monday (We didn't ask them to vote on that post but they did anyway). You are correct that in the promotion rules state entry must take place between noon and 8 p.m. - that means votes must be cast by 7:59 p.m. to fall within that range of time. Per the rules, all comments posted after 8 p.m. are not eligible in the drawing for the first match-up. And yes, there will be one winner for each match-up entry period for each of the eight days in the first round of voting. Good luck to you!

The information is still there... you just have to go to the LUCKE-REWARDS > WINNERS page... scroll to the bottom where it says "Ultimate Millions Second Chance" And look to the right and you'll see a little drop-down menu... choose ALL and you'll see the Lucky for Life Second Chance winners! :-)

I went to the link above and it doesn't ask you if you want to vote. I wasn't sure so I commented 2 times - at the top where it has comment on this page and in the comment on this post of Round One, the very fist post on your facebook page. Then I read the promotional rules and it tells you to comment on that post only for your vote to count. Rules also state 7:59, you said 8:00. There were 376 comments about 8:30 (12 after 8:00) some more than once like me I think were confused. So am I correct in thinking that your comment in the first post is your vote? Last question - when you post the 8 winners on March 24 do you draw one name from Mondays votes, one from Tuesdays votes etc. or are they all added together and then drawn?NC Lottery

KAES, My comments weren't meant to be harsh, I to was only stating some comments. I apologize if I hurt someone's feelings or made them mad. As far as the Player comment I didn't think about multiple people using that screen name - makes sense now though because some of the comments were contradictory. The older I get the more Brain Farts I get. In the future I hope people understand that my comments about their post are never meant to be mean or hurt their feelings. "Disappear" is a strong word! Folks just have to adjust the settings. We got feedback there was too much info on the winner pages, so giving people the power to adjust what they see was the solution. But unless people are looking for those drop-down menus, we understand they don't exactly jump out at you! :)

It's all good LZ. I'm still playing on house money. I just urge players to be smart when playing. Example, last month BBQ tickets would have entered them in the BBQ and the Warehouse 2nd chance drawing automatically , and then they could have used their points to enter what ever lucky rewards drawing they wanted. Different organizations run promotions on either their Facebook or Twitter pages all the time. We aren't doing it to purposefully exclude anyone from participating - there are simply tools that make it possible for us to run promotions on Facebook that we can't do in other places. There are tools we can use that make it possible to conduct this kind of promotion on Facebook. It doesn't cost anything to join Facebook, maybe it would be worth signing up just to participate for the next month! All you have to do is vote on the daily posts and you'll have a chance to win. I agree with a lot of people it seems harder to win now. No one is forcing you to play so quit complaining. It's not like it's your job and you have to do something you think is unfair but you do it to keep your job. Also DEBBIE52 as far as something else not to win you really can't complain because it cost you nothing but some time. PLAYER I enjoy reading some of your post but I think you need to find a hobby. There is a drop down menu next to the second-chance drawings. Make sure it says "all". This will allow you to see the winner list for Warehouse Dash.

This sounds like 'lotsa' fun! Wondering...why the winner's list was removed from the notification page for the "LUCKY FOR LIFE" ($1,000 a day) 2nd chance promotion? I know the deadline for entries was yesterday (3/12) but don't y'all continue to draw winner's until the end of the month? NC Lottery
