First 10 years of lottery history gave us memorable events

Whether it was a giant jackpot, a lucky ticket or a new way to play, there has been no shortage of news since the first lottery ticket went on sale March 30, 2006.

Billions of tickets later, we’ve been able to award billions in prizes and raise billions for education. Here are some significant event that helped shape lottery history:

• (2006) Tar Heel State snags first big-time jackpot: Here’s the news we shared after the Nov. 29, 2006 Powerball drawing: “The Shell Travel World in Halifax is buzzing with people wanting to know who purchased North Carolina’s first Powerball Jackpot winning ticket worth $74.5 million. The convenience store owners, employees and customers all kept saying how exciting it is to be a part of this and they hope it is somebody they know.” It turned out to be Jackie Alston, a corrections officer from Halifax.

• (2007) Players “race” for chance to win on NASCAR® ticket: On March 27, 2007 lottery players got the chance not only to win a prize instantly, but also their first chance to enter non-winning tickets for another opportunity to win big. The $5 NASCAR instant ticket started with five top prizes of $100,000 and three second-chance drawings for the chance to win a trip to a NASCAR-sanctioned race or one or more than 1,000 merchandise packages.

• (2008) First game with “prizes of a lifetime” goes on sale: Tickets for the $130 Million Blockbuster game hit stores on August 5, 2008. It marked the first game with a grand prize that would pay a winner an annual amount for the rest of his or her life. The eventual grand prize winner, Darlene MacQuaide of Fayetteville, won the $50,000 a year prize, which was guaranteed for at least 20 years to MacQuaide or her estate - and for the rest of her life.

• (2009) $88 million mystery: Who is the Powerball jackpot winner? For the second time in North Carolina Education Lottery history, a “perfect” Powerball ticket matched all six numbers. The ticket, for the June 20, 2009 drawing, was sold at the Petro Express on Cleveland Avenue in Kings Mountain. When the winner, Jeff Wilson of Kings Mountain, came forward just days later, he was still planning to attend graduate school later that year.

• (2010) On heels of Mega Millions merger, another Powerball jackpot: Just six days after Mega Millions tickets went on sale in North Carolina, our state had its third jackpot winner for its other multistate jackpot game, Powerball. The winning ticket, sold at the Wilco on Smokey Park Highway in Asheville, won the $141.4 million annuity in the Feb. 7, 2010 drawing. The winner turned out to be Frank Griffin, a retired firefighter from Asheville. Just a few months later, our state’s first-ever Mega Millions jackpot winner, Mike Manheim of Greensboro, won $12 million in the May 28, 2010 drawing.

• (2011) Lottery celebrates birthday with record year, second ‘Mega’ jackpot: After turning five years old in March 2011, the lottery finished the fiscal year on June 30 with record sales, prizes to players and earnings for education. That fall, North Carolina met its second Mega Millions jackpot winner. James Jones, a retired banker from Greenville, won $57 million in the Sept. 30 drawing. “For my family, it will mean the ability to finish the education of our grandchildren and their grandchildren,” said Jones. “For my daughters, it will certainly mean a less stressful financial life and the ability to follow their life ambitions.”

• (2012) Lucke-Rewards program begins for more chances to win: October 1, 2012 was a milestone for lottery players. Since then, players have been entering tickets for points and using them to enter weekly and monthly drawings at no extra cost for the chance to win cash and other prizes. Since then, players have earned more than 234.9 million points that they’ve used to enter drawings more than 12.4 million times - to win more than $1.5 million in prizes!

• (2013) Players record 49 prizes of $1 million in one year: Farmers, a waitress, a prekindergarten teacher, and an accountant were among those winning $1 million or more in lottery prizes during fiscal year 2013. The winner came from 27 different North Carolina counties. Twenty-six of the $1 million wins were won on instant tickets, 22 came thanks to draw games and one prize was awarded in the Holiday Millions second-chance drawing.

• (2014) Lottery partners with Papa John’s on scratch-off ticket: In September 2014, Papa John’s, scratch-off tickets bearing the popular pizza chain’s name went on sale. In a first for the lottery industry, every $2 ticket featured a redeemable bonus code for a free Papa John’s menu item or discount. The game offered the chance to win up to $20,000 instantly, and tickets could be entered into a special drawing to award winners free pizza for a year.

• (2015) ‘Ultimate Millions’ tickets offer chance to win $10 million prizes: The biggest instant scratch-off game in state history, Ultimate Millions, started on Sept. 1, 2015 with four top prizes of $10 million. The game featured 18 prizes of $1 million that could be won instantly and three more that could be won in second-chance drawings.

• (2016) At $1.6 billion, largest jackpot in world history gets the spotlight: Although North Carolina did not have its fifth Powerball player win a share of the record jackpot, interest in the game netted 19 prizes of $50,000 to $2 million in North Carolina. The 20-drawing jackpot run yielded $20 million in prizes and $38 million in earnings for education in our state.

Which event do you think was most memorable in the first decade of the lottery?

The most memorable time for me was when I won the Cash 5 after getting layed-off just 4 mths prior in 2012. Thank you NCEL! Hope it happens again as I'm almost in the same position (again).

It's funny only place I can buy winners in South Carolina and Virginia

4/01/2016 11:37 - NC Lottery

We'll be glad to pass along your suggestion :)

4/01/2016 11:26 - Vincent O.

I drive to south carolina almost every other day just to play their cash 5 because it has multiplier and it's 38 numbers. Nc please add multiplier to cash 5 here to save me gas money

4/01/2016 11:22 - Vincent O.

You guys should add multiplier to the cash 5 and make it an extra $1 option for that play. Its just a gamblers point of view.

I think we should get to pick the school(s) that the money we put in on buying tickets will go. We buy them every day, my fiance won $500 on crossword money multiplier recently. That's the highlight for us.NC Lottery
The state legislature decides the formula for how lottery funds are distributed. If you want to support a particular school, you can make a donation directly to the school district :-) Congrats on the $500 win, too!

Why is it when you buy a scratch off ticket and say I won $100 to $500, I walk back to the clerk to cash it in and they say they can't cash that amount? I ask them why and all they say is they aren't allowed to give the large amount! That upsets me, because now I have to go find a grocery store to cash my ticket! These stores gladly take my money but they aren't giving me my $100 to $500 when I win!!NC Lottery
Stores are allowed to have their own policies on this. We encourage retailers to cash prizes up to $599 but we cannot force them to do it.

3/31/2016 03:41 - Tina T.

Oh my???? The merchants I have been playing scratch off tickets, have been acting "Shady". Weird??? They All used to give my tix back, now they tell me it is illegal???? Talking about winning scratch offs?????NC Lottery
If you ever have a specific concern about something at a particular retailer, please give our security staff a call at 888-732-6235.

I've been practicing my speech for the day I am able to join the Winner's Circle! That will be one memorable interview!

3/30/2016 09:05 - Linda R.

I do not understand, I thought the Lottery started in October 2005 so what is this about March 30, 2006 and the 10 year deal????NC Lottery
The State Lottery Act was passed in 2005. Our first ticket went on sale on March, 30, 2006.

So the odds of that 10x powerplay ball to show is every 1 in 43 spins? Because since you guys added that 10x its been 43 tries since then and we havent seen it yet. But eh! Who am i?NC Lottery
North Carolina is one of 44 states - along with Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands - that has Powerball. Power Play gives you a chance to multiply your winnings. Compared to the odds of winning bigger prizes, a 1 in 43 shot to turn a $50,000 prize into $500,000 is pretty good!

3/30/2016 06:32 - jason r.

No wonder then..maybe my attitude has gotten me blocked from winning...NC Lottery
The drawings are completely random, held under the supervision of an auditor, according to specific security procedures. Nobody has any idea whose entries belong to who in the drawing. We get a lot of questions from a lot of people! :-) There are hundreds of thousands of Lucke-Zone members entering for a chance to win - your entry has just as good a chance of winning as anyone else's!

Wow,N4free, this buds for u. I don't work for LZ or the big bang theory and I can figure out u used 2b R4free. I have no idea who u r, but I feel your pain. Seriously, we ALL need to take our tickets home, double and triple check them, then enter them in the LZ before we cash them in.

I was just wondering if when you seen our names above our blog post can you find out who we are even if it just says player.can you find out our real name and address just from blog post?NC Lottery
Yes, it is possible for us to do that. But the only time the communications team that answers blog questions looks up the contact information generally is to make a responsible gaming referral to someone who sounds like they might need to talk to someone.

3/30/2016 04:24 - Denver G.

I'm wondering if people actually know the difference between lucky rewards drawings and second chance drawings.

3/30/2016 04:12 - Vincent O.

Is the 10x power play for the powerball still in the mix or it was just a scam for sales and production. Because no one has seen the 10x powerplay ball. And since you guys added 10x, get rid of the 2x because people spend alot of money to be compesated with the 2x.NC Lottery
Here are the odds for the Power Play: X2, 1 in 1.8... X3, 1 in 13.3... X4, 1 in 14.3... X5, 1:21.5... X10, 1 in 43.

3/30/2016 03:34 - jason r.

I'm going to start begging for cashed in tickets from the stores in my area..is it illegal to buy used tickets off of eBay?also do you know or can you figure out who we are by our blog post?NC Lottery
It's not illegal to buy used lottery tickets, but we don't recommend spending money on that! As for posting questions and comments on the blog, when you register as a member, yes you provide your contact information so that we can notify you if you win a big prize. Why do you ask?

Second chance drawings really works, my husband's brother won in 2013, hopefully we will become a prize winner in the near future, our blessings will arrive soon, and good luck to everyone who has or will enter into the second chance drawings.NC Lottery
Congrats & good luck!

3/30/2016 02:18 - jacqueline h.

Its my time to win..

3/30/2016 12:53 - jason r.

It is SO wrong that we can cash in our ticket and the store clerk can take it home for the points, that is one of many reasons we should not be allowed to enter winners into the SECOND CHANCE..I'm not alone I hope in this injusticeNC Lottery
You are in control of your ticket. Our advice is to enter a winning ticket for your free Lucke-Rewards points before you cash it in!

3/30/2016 12:25 - kathleen g.

The most memorable for me was when second chance drawing was made available.

3/30/2016 11:35 - Everlyne M.

Where is the power ball winner Marie who keeps bailing her boo out of jail. That was a massive win that should have been featured.

3/30/2016 08:51 - Denver G.

My write in would be, (2016)- the introduction of the Lucky For Life draw game to NCEL.NC Lottery
That's a good one! Hopefully before the year is out we'll have a top prize winner to celebrate :-D
