Navy veteran wins $100,000 playing 10th Anniversary Millions

Have you tried any of the 10th Anniversary scratch-off games that started this month? Bobby Smith was feeling lucky when he did. And it made him a $100,000 winner in the new $10 game. His story is the best one of the week.

Smith, a 20-year Navy veteran from Lincoln County, often buys his tickets at Jones Exxon on N.C. 16 in the town of Stanley.

“I walked in and told the guy, ‘I am feeling lucky, give me two tickets,’” he said. Smith went back to his car and used an old penny to scratch the tickets. He said the amount of the prize he saw got his hands shaking. He walked back into the store and asked how to cash a $100,000 ticket.

“Everybody that was in there congratulated me for winning it,” said Smith, who worked as a bus driver, mechanic and warehouse worker before retirement. “I had one woman come up and hug my neck.”

Smith said he planned to buy a car, a new sofa and a new recliner, and put the rest in the bank as an emergency fund.

Smith wasn't the only six-figure winner this week. Charles Darkah of Greensboro used his lucky Carolina Cash 5 numbers to win $159,905 in the April 15 drawing. He bought his winning ticket at the Speedway on West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro. He beat the odds of 1 in 575,757 to win the jackpot.

Two players of instant games won $50,000 and $30,000. Frederick Melges of Durham and Raymond Elkin of Newton won those amounts playing 5X Bingo Multiplier and 10th Anniversary Riches, respectively.

A Wilkesboro player, Elizabeth Johnson, won $7,000 playing Lucky 7's. Fifteen more player won $5,000 from 14 different places. They are:
