Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots produce big wins

The growing Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots made for some big wins this week. Tickets sold in Concord and Greenville both turned out to be lucky ones.

A retired couple from Texas took home $1 million after they bought a Mega Millions ticket during their trip to North Carolina.

Joseph and Anetia Roseman of Magnolia, Texas were visiting friends when they stopped at the S.M. Mart on Poplar Tent Road in Concord. Anetia decided to purchase a $1 Quick Pick ticket for the June 24^th drawing.

Joseph realized they won the next morning. He immediately told his wife.

“I asked her,” Joseph said, “‘What do you get when you match five numbers in Mega Millions?’”

“One million dollars,” she said.

“I guess you won a million then,” Joseph replied.

Friday’s Mega Millions drawing features a $415 million jackpot as an annuity or $286.4 million in cash. This is the 3^rd largest jackpot in the game’s 14-year history.

Powerball is following right behind with a jackpot on Saturday worth $243 million annuity or $165.9 million in cash.

The Powerball win came with a Quick Pick Power Play purchased at the Speedway on Dickinson Avenue in Greenville. The lucky winner of the $150,000 prize was Henry Baldree of Vero Beach, Fla.

How about some big instant wins? A $200,000 one went to Janice Mercer of Pinetops. She bought a lucky 20X The Cash ticket at the Exxon Pricedown Food Mart on North Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount. And a trip to get a cup of coffee turned into a $100,000 win for Andreas Cabral of Raleigh after he bought a Ruby Red 7s ticket.

Seven players won $20,000 to $50,000:

-Julian Locklear of Pembroke: $50,000 (Junior Big Ol’ Bucks)

-Praful Patel of Rockingham: $50,000 ($200 Million Blowout)

-Christian Kenny of Wilmington: $30,000 (Golden Ticket)

-Geraldine Freeman of Durham: $25,000 (Mega Millions)

-Derrick Neville of Raleigh: $20,000 (Cash Inferno)

-Thaddeus Baker of Nashville: $20,000 (Ultimate Millions)

Eleven players won $10,000:

-Befekadu Assefa of Charlotte ($2,500 A Week For Life)

-Carolyn Herring of Oxford (Millionaire Bucks)

-Emma Smith of Winston Salem (10X The Cash)

-Gonzalo Dominguez of Red Springs, (Wheel Of Fortune)

-Horace Hall of Leland (Millionaire Bucks)

-Ivey Murphy of Burgaw ($200 Million Blowout)

-Janet Fenner of Chesapeake, VA (Diamonds and Dollars)

-Jerrianne Flores of New Bern (Ruby Red 7s)

-Mark Osborne of Sylva (Millionaire Bucks)

-Michael Thomas of Greensboro (Ruby Red 7s)

-Wade Boston of Washington (20X The Cash)

Seventeen more players won $5,000. They are from Ayden; Candler; Carolina Beach; Greensboro; Lexington; Madison, Ala.; McDonald; Mooresville; Morganton; Orrum; Oxford; Raleigh; Ramseur; Statesville; Wilmington; and Yadkinville.

So, the NCEL has provided generous revenue for the state government for the last decade and we are to expect the state government agents to perform an independent audit of themselves and their trusty NCEL tax collectors. It sounds like a conflict of interest to me.NC Lottery

Hi Lue - This is a very common question that we get. The bottom line is that it is not easier or harder to win a lottery prize depending on where you live or play. There are 1 million people in Mecklenburg County where Charlotte is located. If you hear that somebody won a big prize there, that means 999,999 other people did not. Everyone has the same chance to win a prize. Places where more tickets are sold don't have an advantage - there are just more people taking a chance to win there. Does that make sense? The odds on your lottery ticket in Elizabeth City has just as good a chance as a ticket sold in a tiny town in the mountains or in a big city like Charlotte.

Please do not use my name! Thanks! Your response to Luckystrike on 7/3/16 to me left me a little confused. You stated that over 6800 places receive scratch off tickets.Also,winning tickets are distributed across the state. I get that part. The part i don't get is the response that you gave about more people playing there so we are to expect more winners there. If the winning tickets are equitable distributed then it should not make a difference. The map of winning areas shows that some areas have more winners. For example: Elizabeth City and surrounding counties have no representation.You may say Greenville is,which is true but also 2 hours away. It should not matter if more people are playing in Charlotte.If a winning ticket is in this area then someone should be winning in this area.Please explain. My wife and I finally got our laptop in Feb 2016. We had been saving our tickets (loosers0 just in case we hit big for tax reasons. We joined LZ finally got all entered in second chance. We are like a lot of you who are complaining but I figure if we can't afford it we should not be wasting our money. We have not hit big just three 500 dollars, you better believe we have spent more than that. Yes I believe it can be fixed but I keep playing, I liked the smile when we gave a little money to the lady who sold us the ticket.

It's a veiled confession that the NCEL falsly advertises prizes won. It is incumbent upon the NCEL to prove their legitimacy to the public. A ceremonial check is not valid evidence of a win. You're misunderstanding what that means. The size of a prize is not the same as the after-tax winnings. On wins of $600 to $5,000, we are required to withhold 5.75% state tax and on wins of $5,001 and greater we must also withhold 25% in federal taxes. All of the lottery's finances and practices are independently audited. You are welcome to come to any of our regional claim centers and witness for yourself as people claim prizes.

I think it would be great to have a winner from Moore County or Clyde or anywhere except the same old places.This is not luck.If it were luck you could win in a small community or a large County just as easy and it is not working that way.If all the winners are going to be in places like Charlotte of Raleigh or any of the heavy populated areas the lottery is just for those areas only and the small tows do not have a chance.Even the scratch off tickets (winners are in the same areas and no one is suppose to know where the winning tickets are going but there is something not right about that either.I think if the lottery can rig it so the amount is larger before one wins ,they can manipulate it any way they want.This is just an opinion and we all have those.NC Lottery

Not sure why that would be. It's possible that it has something to do with your e-mail program. We are not getting other reports of this here in the Lucke-Zone blog comments. If your question is do you need to keep your tickets once you've entered them for Lucke-Rewards points or specific second-chance promotions, the answer is no. You don't need the physical tickets once you've done that :)

I can't help but notice that many big winners are ckose proximity to Charlotte area...My guess is those winning packs are put in those locations on purpose..smh NC Lottery
