'Yee-haw!' $4 million winner is best of the week

Unless you've won a big lottery prize, it's hard to predict what words would come out of your mouth - for some folks, we probably wouldn't be able to print some of the words!

When Dennis Powell of Salisbury saw that he won $4 million on his Ruby Red 7's ticket, he exclaimed "Yee-haw!" Can you blame him? Two more $4 million prizes and three more $1 million prizes are still in the game.

He wasn't the only seven-figure winner this week. Elisa Guitierrez of Charlotte has a Saturday tradition of buying lottery tickets with her husband. Last Saturday was no different - until he scratched off a 50X The Cash ticket. "I think you won $1 million," he said. "Oh my God," Elisa responded.

A Brunswick County man came forward to claim a Cash 5 jackpot worth more than half a million dollars. Carl Greggs Sr. of Boliva won $535,318 in the Aug. 12 drawing. He bought his winning ticket at the Kopp's Kwik Stop 2 on George II Highway in Southport.

What started out as a joke for an Alamance County player turned into a $200,000 prize. Robert McKinney of Gibsonville was kidding with a friend when he bought a 10th Anniversary Spectacular ticket. "I'll show you how to win on a scratch-off," he told her. And then he did.

- John Brimecombe of Concord (10th Anniversary Millions)
- Maria Caro of Mount Airy (50X The Cash)
- Vonnie Butler of Durham (5X The Cash)
- Kerry and Ronald Rogers of Indian Trail (Fat Wallet)

A lucky player from Goldsboro, Donald McCoy, scratched off the top prize of $7,000 on a Lucky 7's ticket.

Players from 13 places won $5,000, two of them from Greensboro. The other dozen are from: Concord, Elizabeth City, Greenville, Hendersonville, High Point, Ocean Isle Beach, Pikeville, Pittsboro, Princeton, Raleigh, Williamston, and York, SC.

Sailfish, jump in the boat with the majority of the rest of us ! Fact is, there are a LOT more losing tickets out there than winning tickets but yeah, if you spend that much on a ticket you should be able to at least break even more often . Doesn't make for much thanks to the majority of us supporting the Education lottery with our purchases !

Can someone tell me. We to lunch with two friend today and one of them bought $100 with of tickets Big Mistake. Bougt two $30 tickets and two $20 tickets not one thin dime back,nothing 100 bucks out the window. On every ticket the matching numbers were one off on just about every other number. What does this mean,you were so close are just so unlucky. The Lottery is the biggest joke to ever hit this state,nothing but robbery with out using a gun to hold you up. I also see all the big winners are still in the bigger citys.

It's so funny I checked winners in nc scratch off all same areas not in these poor areas every week Charlotte Greenville raliegh and the poor people is the ones that need to win too. Why they don't show pick 4 drawings during day or do they just say what come outNC Lottery
We have winners from all different walks of life, from all across the state. A lottery ticket has no idea who is buying it and nobody knows where a lucky ticket will show up until after a drawing, or until after the player scratches off the ticket. People of all different income levels live in Charlotte, Greenville and Raleigh by the way! :-)

@ NOOKIEPLAY - To answer your second question, the prize money the lottery pays to winners is totally separate from our earnings for education. The state legislature, not the lottery, decides which programs will receive the money we raise. In the last 10 years they have directed the money to pay for teacher salaries, school construction, prekindergarten, and need-based college assistance. We contributed more than half a billion dollars last year for education. But the state spends more than $12 billion a year on education. So the money we raise makes a difference but will never cover every need. @ NOOKIEPLAY - First things first, thanks for asking us these questions so we can share some information with you and other folks who want to know. To answer your first question, The $4 million winner could have claimed his prize in the form of $200,000 annuity payments for 20 years. Instead he chose the $2.4 million lump sum which, after state and federal taxes, was worth $1.6 million. Had he chosen the $4 million annuity, by law, those payments would have been taxed as well.

I hope this is taken into consideration that I just seen how someone in Salisbury just won a 4 million in ruby 7 and out of the lump some he got a little over 1 million. So if the money is going towards the schools why come Harnett county schools have to buy staplers, red pens, posted noted, and etc for school that to me sound like school supplies for teachers. With that said where is the portion that goes to the school system? I personally think it's all lies, when that a lot of people believe that you guys will support the kids that are trying to learn. So tell me where the money goes because I know for sure one county in North Carolina that's not seeing a penny and that's from a family memeber that works for Harnett County school.NC Lottery

Hey, if your not Sharon who are you? Just kidding. After reading the blog comments over the years you p/u stuff. Any contest that you feel you can not participate in after you are declared a winner you can have a proxy take your place. For what ever reason, age, health, stage fright. Your proxy does not win the prizes or pay the taxes YOU do. They might get a thrill or 15 minutes of fame. Remember the 2 time winner of the Monopoly Millionaire 2nd chance drawing? She sent a proxy the 1st time , then went her self the 2nd time.

The question we get most often has to do with winner notification and winner announcements as it relates to Lucke-Rewards and promotional drawings. Winners are typically notified by email within 48 hours. So for a drawing held on a Wednesday, winners can expect a message by 5 p.m. Friday. If a winner does not respond to email notification, we will follow up with a telephone call and, if necessary, send certified mail. We announce a winner’s name only after he or she has responded to notification and completes the claim process. We understand why folks are eager to find out who won but, until a prize is claimed, we don’t officially have a winner.

Under the instructions for "Find Ticket Entry Code" is says "Instant scratch-off tickets that win an instant prize cannot be entered. Any single ticket can only be entered once." while the introduction section says all tickets can be entered. If all tickets can be entered then the Find Entry Ticket Code section needs to be updated.NC Lottery
