What do a school custodian from a small mountain town and a parking lot attendant from the biggest city on the North Carolina Coast have in common? They both won $1 million this week.
Michael Owenby of Candler was helping his friend shop for a car when they stopped at the Sunoco on Patton Avenue in Asheville. Owenby bought a Mountain Dew, and a Millionaire Bucks ticket. And it made him a $1 million winner. Two prizes of $1 million and two prizes of $4 million are still in the game.
Just a five-hour drive east on I-40 is where Terry Wallington won $1 million in Wednesday's Powerball drawing. “I’ve never seen anything like that,” said Wallington, pointing to the zeroes adding up to $1,000,000 on the big check he was about to get at lottery headquarters. “Nothing like that, except on TV.”

A pair of longtime friends used one set of numbers to buy a Lucky for Life ticket - and they both matched all five white balls to win the game's second prize of $25,000 a Year for Life. Lakisha Henry of Clinton and David Brinson of Magnolia bought their winning tickets at the Magnolia Food Mart on Monk Street in Magnolia.
A couple from Randolph County won $200,000 in the Sept. 17 Powerball drawing. Jerry Lambert and his partner Aaron Britt bought their winning ticket at the Ready Mart on Fayetteville Street in their hometown of Asheboro.
How's this for a birthday present: Woodrow Herring on Linconton celebrated his birthday on Sept. 14. The next day he won the $107,703 Cash 5 jackpot. “I was so surprised I fell out of my chair,” Herring said.
Most people put their valuables in a safe place, but when Patrick Blunt of Greensboro found out he had a Crossword Money Multiplier scratch-off ticket worth $100,000, he didn’t let it out of his sight. “I ended up sleeping on top of the ticket,” Blunt said. He bought the $5 scratch-off ticket at the Pantry Shop on East Lexington Avenue in High Point.

- Mike Jones of Lumberton (Ruby Red 7's)
Eleven more players won $5,000. They are from: Charlotte, Concord, Cornelius, Flat Rock, Greensboro, Kannapolis, Madison, Morganton, Oxford, Pineville, and Zebulon.
