Pair of $1 million wins headline best of the week

This week, we had two winners of $1 million win two very different ways: One instantly and the other in a second-chance drawing.

The instant win of $1 million happened in the small mountain town of Murphy, famous for being one of the last stops - if not the last stop - in North Carolina before you get to Tennessee. Clifford Owle, Jr. bought his lucky 10th Anniversary Millions ticket at the Big D on Hill Street in Murphy.

A retiree from Harnett County won the $1 million prize in the most recent Ultimtae Millions second-chance drawing. “I’m still in shock,” Pauline Bordes said as she collected her prize. “But I can definitely say that the North Carolina lottery has changed my life.” When the date of the final second-chance drawing for the game is determined, we'll share that with you here in the Lucke-Zone.

We had our second $200,000 winner in the Panthers scratch-off game. And the winner, from Burke County, told us it would make a big difference for her family after a fire destroyed her home two years ago. Aleta Turner has a new home now, but says the prize money will make it possible to fully recover.

Big Winners

Two Cash 5 jackpot winners collected their prize money. Alexa Voris of Gastonia won $120,427 in the Aug. 27 drawing and Alton Garner of Henderson won $112,571 in the Aug. 23 drawing.

In other Cash 5 news, we had our first-ever jackpot winner who played through subscription services! Check out our blog about the $149,970 win in Thursday's drawing :-)

We had two $50,000 prize winners. Sonya Morgan of Pisgah Forest won instantly on a Junior Big Ol' Bucks ticket and Troy Smith of Holly Springs won in the Aug. 31 Powerball drawing.

Eight players scratched their way to $10,000:

- Jesse Basinger of Rockwell (Millionaire 7's)
- Sharon Film of Mooresville ($2,500 a Week for Life!)
- Doris Davis of Leland (Ruby Red 7's)
- Andrew Johnson of Fayetteville ($200 Million Blowout)
- Belva peterson of Clinton (Ruby Red 7's)
- Marcus Meadows of Raleigh ($200 Million Blowout)
- Marsha Cox of Claremont ($4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular)
- Fausto Pachedo Almeida of Smithfield ($400,000 Bonus Cash)

And 11 more players won $5,000. They are from: Ayden, Burlington, Durham, Etowah, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Greensboro, Hollister, Landis, Marion, and Matthews.

The lottery's finances and security practices are a matter of public record, and everything we do is independently reviewed to ensure fairness to all players. Second chance drawings has absolutely no transparency. With other drawings such as Power Ball I know what my numbers are and what the winning number was. In the second chance drawings I don't know what my numbers are, What the winning number was, and when I select 10 entries and confirm I don't know if the numbers for the 10 entries are all together or random. So much secrecy leads to mistrust.NC Lottery

The $4,000,000 Platinum Payout game has more than $100 million in prizes. None are less than the ticket prize of $20. A $2 prize can be revealed as one of the possible prizes on winning and non-winning tickets, but with winning tickets it is used in a combination with a multiplier such as 20X to produce at least a $40 prize. So a winning ticket with a $2 prize would mean a winner had at least doubled his or her money. question? NCEL head quarter in Charlotte is it still located there? I only see post for Raleigh office. For your payout winnings, Charlotte would be closer for me when I win. NC Lottery
We have a Charlotte regional office and claims center. You can claim prizes from $600 to $99,999 there. You claim prizes of $100,000 or more at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. Hey I have a question, I play a lot,a lot,a lot not a true big win yet...but on second chances why dont NCEL pick winners from the amount if entries because I don't think its fair to someone like me that had over 125 entries for ultimate millions and did not win.....I think its not fair if a person has 2 entries that they found to win...NCEL needs to leave the random system and go with players with more that 50 entries separate...thanksNC Lottery
With games of chance, there is never a guarantee of winning - only a chance to win. In the same way someone with one Powerball ticket has a chance to win, someone with one entry in a second-chance drawing has a chance to win. Good luck!

Winners' names and hometowns are posted on the website following the validation of the winners. Winners are notified by the NCEL or its designee via the phone number and/or email address that they provided in their accounts.

If you go under the winners tab, under second chance drawings and select the "all" option on the drop down menu you'll be able to see the winners.
