The biggest and best winner story of the week belongs to Irene Tillman. For over 10 years she has been the mail carrier for Route 24 in Chatham County. Turns out the number "24" was the lucky number on an Ultimate Millions ticket that won her a $1 million prize. She bought the lucky ticket at the Shalom Gas and Cash Mart on N.C. 42 in her home town of Goldston.

It was lucky birthday numbers playing Cash 5 that led to an early birthday present for an pea farmer on the coast. Allen Liverman of Elizabeth City said he would celebrate his 80th birthday with a $462,161 Cash 5 jackpot. He bought the $1 ticket at the Zoom In on West Main Street in his home town.

Another Cash 5 jackpot winner collected his winnings this week. Russel Robbins of Goldsboro had good luck in the March 11 drawing, winning the $171,201 jackpot. He bought his $1 Quick Pick at the Murphy Express on N.C. 581 in his home town.

Big Winners

A group of eight players won $50,000 in the Jan. 21 Powerball drawing. Five of them are from Virginia, one is from Florida, another is from Washington D.C., and the eighth lives in North Carolina. The winning ticket was purchased at the Kangaroo Express on North Harrison Avenue in Cary.

Fannie Jones of Battleboro became the fifth player to win the op prize of $40,000 on a $2 Double Match ticket, leaving one top prize still in the game.

Vaden Little of Greensboro Megaplied his way to $25,000 in the March 10 Mega Millions drawing.

Two players won $20,000. Sarah Bailey got the prize playing Celebrate 2017 - two top prizes are still in the $2 game. And Joshua Jones of Trenton scratched off his winnings on an Ultimate Millions ticket.

A dozen players scratched their way to $10K:

- Samantha Blackwell of Whiteville (20X The Cash)
- Douglas Brigman of Mars Hill ($2,500 a Week for Life!)
- Frederick Conner of Efland ($4,000,000 Platinum Payout)
- Robert Edwards of Whitakers (20X The Cash)
- Beverly Hardy Oladayo of New Bern (20X The Cash)
- Lathomas Holmes of Mount Olive ("7")
- Catherine McDowell of Gastonia ($1,000,000 Bonus Cash)
- Cindy Robinson of Hamlet ("7")
- Calvin Tanner of Winston-Salem (50X The Cash)
- Julie Walker of Knightdale (50X The Cash)
- Curtis Walker of Red Springs (Ruby Red 7's)
- Cheryl Wynn of Raleigh (Carolina Millions)

Lester Brennan of Elizabethtown won the top prize of $7,000 in the $1 Lucky 7's game #394 that started in January of 2014. Seven of that game's top prizes remain to be claimed. A new Lucky 7's game #540 started this month. All 15 of its top prizes are still in the game.

Twenty wins of $5,000 were awarded. One of them went to a group of friends, four of whom are from New Bern with the fifth from Morehead City. Two more of the prizes went to players from Concord and two more went to players from Mount Airy. The other 15 were won by players from: Andrews, Angier, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Goldsboro, Hurdle Mills, Jacksonville, Lillington, Madison, Nebo, Roseboro, Taylorsville, Wilmington, Wilson, and Winston-Salem.

Thanks for reading. Until next time, have a fun and safe weekend.

I think you guys do a great job and I appreciate the courtesy my husband was shown when he went to Raleigh. I will keep on playing maybe not as much, not broke but slightly bent. I love the lottery but I do understand others concerns. Anyway way to go all you lucky winners.

@ NOTSOLILBIT - We understand well that public trust is essential to our operations. One way we try to earn that is by allowing comments critical or accusatory of the lottery to be published here so we can share information that might be helpful. More importantly, our practices are audited internally as well as by independent external auditors on an ongoing basis to ensure our operations are fair to all players.

@ NOTSOLILBIT - In the case of instant lottery tickets, there are tens of millions of tickets printed for games each year. For accounting purposes alone the lottery must know where a winning ticket was scanned or cashed. If a retailer pays out a $500 prize out of their cash drawer, the lottery has to balance that payment to the retailer. Before a ticket can be sold or claimed for a prize, the pack it is on must be scanned by a retailer to activate it - and the gaming system records that information. That's how the lottery knows a particular ticket was sold at a particular store. Understand that the lottery has no idea in what sequence particular retailers will order packs. A store in Asheville might order a pack and the next one is to a store in Ahoskie. The lottery doesn't control where particular packs of tickets go and employees don't know what's in a particular pack.

I think my question is misunderstood. I know you have to take a winning ticket over $600 to Raleigh because my husband did, he won $1000 and showed his drivers license and etc. What I was asking how do you know which store that ticket came from so you can send banner. You responded once the ticket is scanned, and confirmed as a winner the gaming system which connects retailers to the lottery records-what game it was and what store it was cashed. It is soooo easy to see why people think you all know where the big tickets go to. I think the same thing also, but I still play. Have a good day and night everyone

@ NOTSOLILBIT - Prizes of $600 to $99,999 must be claimed at one of the lottery's regional claims centers. Prizes of $100,000 or more must be claimed at headquarters in Raleigh. We have a sales staff that visits each lottery retailer on a regular basis. When an instant ticket is scanned and confirmed to be a winner, the gaming system that connects retailers to the lottery records the details - what game it was, what store it was cashed at, etc. And then of course for the prizes of $600 or more, we know who those winners are because they have to show ID and proof of social to claim. We provide the certificates to retailers so that players like you know that real people win real lottery prizes.

3/22/2017 09:19 - NC Lottery

@ NOTSOLILBIT - The lottery in North Carolina works much like all state lotteries do. Players buy tickets for a chance to win. Most tickets don't win prizes, which is what makes it possible for a $1 ticket to be worth $1,000 or a $10 ticket to be worth $1 million. Instant games pay out anywhere from 60% to 78% in prizes. Because people play these games of chance, it's possible for a portion of ticket sales in our state to go to education - $634 million last year. Retailers are paid a 7% commission. The lottery operates efficiently, investing 1% in advertising and less than 1% on salaries and benefits. Information about lottery revenue is published in our independently-audited annual reports on our public website. Because there is never a guarantee that someone will win, we encourage people to play for fun knowing it takes luck to beat the odds and win a prize big or small.

NCEL, you people say that last year $1.5 billion was won in prizes. I totally believe this but if you stop and think about that is not that much considering how much money people are spending. I have played a lot myself and I have not won but $500 one time on a scratch. Another remark I have is I notice that some stores have certificates from you all saying this store had a $10,000 or $1,000 winner. I thought you had to take ticket to Raleigh winning that much. How do yall know where to send the certificates?NC Lottery
Please see our response below.

3/21/2017 02:35 - Frank L.

Congrats to all the winners!

3/20/2017 07:24 - Elizabeth T.

has anyone ever won with an online purchase?NC Lottery
Yes. Although sales last year for games available through subscription were less than 1% of total sales of those games, we have had a $5,000 Lucky for Life winner, a $15,000 Mega Millions winner, a $20,000 Powerball winner, and a $149,970 Cash 5 jackpot winner. You have the same chance of winning playing through subscription as buying a ticket at a store. Good luck!

Congrats to all the winners!!!! How are you contacted if you were to win a second chance prize???NC Lottery
The question we get most often has to do with winner notification and winner announcements as it relates to Lucke-Rewards and promotional drawings. Winners are typically notified by email within 48 hours. So for a drawing held on a Wednesday, winners can expect a message by 5 p.m. Friday. If a winner does not respond to email notification, we will follow up with a telephone call and, if necessary, send certified mail.

3/20/2017 12:02 - Charlene W.

The NCEL is donating 1 Mill to support gambling programs LOL the very same thing the are causing, how about donating some back to the ppl that are losing their money due to the rigged system where yaw plant winning certain areas like sunflowers seeds.NC Lottery
Lottery players in North Carolina won $1.5 billion in prizes last year. Everyone who plays the lottery has the same chance of winning as anyone else :-)

Great winnings to them!! Maybe their good luck will rub off on others!

3/19/2017 10:34 - Bobby D.

Sorry to bother you but another question regarding online games. If somehow you can't reach to my phone when either it's off or out of coverage area then would you send me an email to contact me about my winnings? And what do I have to bring if I'm a winner. NC Lottery

I live out here in the backwoods of Harnett County, on a little hill called Duncan, I stopped purchases scratch-offs after buying at Least 100 or more diff amounts and types from EVERY location near and far for the past 2 months and prob won my money back give or take $50 .There is NOTHING in rural areas, only the suburb ones, I have stopped this obsolete scratch offs and figured the Western area, Charlotte, Grnsboro etc. as well as store owners and employees have the BIG winnings, after all EVERYBODY only certain ones deserve to the gold.I rather spend $5 week with the Powerball and, mega mill on hope instead of wasting money on those colorful cardboard cards for a miracle.I would like to get a house in the city and pay it forward toward these poverty filled communities in the rural area as where I live, this is a poor county, use to be 'dry" county until couple years ago and I believe the lotto is also dry out here, what a shame only certain ppl CAN win

3/19/2017 10:13 - BENITA H.

I'm praying to win soon

Wow I noticed the rage concerning the "retailers and employees "buying My and winning millions from their store have been going on for 5 more years according to the blogs .After all the years and responses from the honest people losing their money wanting something to change this where they are not allowed ,obviously have fallen on deaf ears and the articles to read about the whole lotto scam try huffington post NC broken promise on education lottery finding or perhaps pine bluff the commercial lotto conspiracy theories,so much info bout scam you get tired of reading ,urban areas win more than rural ones winnings get planted according to geological area
