Surry County man wins $200,000 'Taxes Paid' prize

Welcome to the Good Friday edition of the weekly winner wrap-up.

Richard Hayes of Elkin scratched off a $200,000 top prize on a Taxes Paid scratch-off. And that's how much he took home after taxes. He bought a lucky $5 ticket at Ashley Farms on Auston-Traphill Road in his hometown.

With Hayes' claim, four top prizes of $200,000 remain in the game.

A Cash 5 player from Morganton came forward to claim his half of the $326,084 jackpot won in the March 27 drawing. James Wilson bought his winning ticket at the Salem Express on Salem Road in his hometown. The other half of the jackpot was won by Danny Marshall of Wake County. He bought his winning ticket at the Mira Mart on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.

Half a dozen players won $10,000 instantly:

- Brandon Davis of Bailey (Carolina Millions)
- Edward Holmes of Salisbury (Carolina Millions)
- Dustin Phillips of Broadway (50X The Cash)
- Betty Sampson of Fayetteville ($1,000,000 Bonus Cash)
- Keith West of Princeton ($1,000,000 Taxes Paid)
- Zong Yang of Charlotte ($4,000,000 Platinum Payout)

Big Winners

Two players scratched off $7,000 each on Lucky 7's tickets. Steven Parker of Charlotte and Wilma Harley of Greensboro are the winners.

Seventeen prizes of $5,000 were awarded. Two of the winners are from Durham. The other 15 are from Bahama, Cary, Charlotte, Elizabeth City, Fayetteville, Flat Rock, Greensboro, Hickory, Kenly, King, Sanford, Spencer, Waxhaw, Whispering Pines, and Winston-Salem.

The lottery doesn't know where winning instant tickets are until someone brings their lucky ticket to claim a prize. Tickets are distributed randomly across the state so everybody can have a chance. Overtime, luck can happen anywhere.

It would be great to know where exactly the winners bought their tickets. Not just the store # but, the physical address. If we could go to the corresponding icon and clicked "winning tickets purchased here" would help tremendously.

My comment is sad to say I live in a county that doesn't have a retailer who carries a lot of scratch offs it is impossible to find a lot of the scratch offs after I played them early when they came out now no one carries them your new retail boxes aka food lion Harris tether rite aid are stocked with up to 10 slots with same game how about lottery makes it fair by allowing everyone access to all scratch off games open a lottery store in every county you sell scratch off s in please respond you have my email addNC Lottery

KAPsi86,well said but unfortunately you are beating yourself in the head! Despite the lottery's denials-any well run business would have to know the displacement of said 1M+ instant scratch off tickets as to not have them scratched off quickly and kill their long term profit expectation.From watching the beating they are taking on Pick 3 and Pick 4 this year i don't believe we will be getting our annual report of increased profits-ending a 10 year stretch run!So sad for education. Boo Hoo. No one i know cares anything about this so called education lottery proceed nonsense. You can rest assure that somebody knows exactly when and where these high dollar jackpots will be placed.NC Lottery
The procedures with instant games are designed to distribute the prizes as randomly as possible throughout the life span of the game. By making the distribution random, it gives everyone the same chance at winning the prizes. Good luck to you when you choose to play.

@ KAPsi86 - If you read through the many pages of the blog, you will see examples of players from places big and small, from all across the state, who ask questions about or suggest that it's somehow easier or harder to win the lottery in one place more than another. It's just not the case. We promise if anyone were to move from one part of the state to another, their odds of winning wouldn't change. You might just have more or less neighbors and be closer to the mountains or the beach.

A legitimate & compelling concern has come forward regarding the demographic location of winning draw tickets (where they are sold) & the lack of "high dollar" winning tickets/winners from neighborhoods which are heavily populated by ethnic minorities. It is a widely held notion that prizes of $1 to $1,000 can be won in these places, but that the "real money" can be found in suburbia or in affluent areas (IF they choose to allow a vendor within THEIR community). If you were to survey, you would find that this is indeed an issue. If one empirically deduces that etnic minorities constitute a large number, if not the majority of players, then why aren't the winners reflective of the same phenomena? Ask...you will find that at least in Greensboro, foljs from these neighborhoods will drive to northern or northwestern Guilford County to buy scratch offs or quick picks because of this belief. Hey, Can'tBreakEven. Winning a big lottery prize does take a lot of luck. However, the lottery averaged $4.1 million a day in prizes last year. Fifty-eight people won a prize of $1 million or more. Good luck to you.

I know that it is all about chance but the second chance drawings or drawings in general are interesting considering I've entered multiples and I haven't won anything. We do see many win over and over. It makes me wonder when some people have won several times.So I do understand how some may get discouraged but we are to do it for fun but at the same time we are human.

Hey barracuda, just to let you know, I had 1350 entries in the X the cash second chance drawing. I didn't win anything either. But you gotta figure, there were over 8.5 million entries in that drawing. I'm not complaining. I know some had twice as many entries as I did. Not sure if they won or not, but I do know it only takes one lucky entry to win anything.

Thanks for the feedback. The lottery tries to keep a good supply of pencils at retail locations. So if you find worn-out pencils at a play center, ask the retailer for new ones. If the retail location is out, we can deliver more.

Just to let you know, the updates done to the system last week has caused a lot of issues to the machines in Durham when trying to run cards. One of the biggest problems is the pencils that LZ furnished are hard to pick up on the cards. NC Lottery
