Four $1 million wins headline week of major prizes

We cut a lot of big checks this week, including four handed to $1 million winners.

The $1 million winners are:

- Alvaro Alguilar of Ramseur (Platinum 7's)
- Jesse Callahan of Greensboro (Extreme Millions)
- Louis Horton of Lillington ($1,000,000 Taxes Paid)
- Gaudencio Leiva of Newton Grove ($5,000,000 Mega Cash)

Four more players came forward to collect six-figure prizes:

- Wilson Amaya of Selma ($5,000,000 Mega Cash)
- Gregory Errthum of Denver, NC (5/6 Powerball draw)
- Heather Johnson of Lenoir (5/6 Powerball draw)
- Eric Schwarz of Hope Mills ($4,000,000 Platinum Payout)

A Lucky 7's Crossword ticket spelled $75,000 for Ashley Barner of Forest City. And two Cash 5 jackpot winners claimed their winnings. Richard Moreau of Hillsborough won $70,539 in the May 4 drawing. Daniel Massenburg of Durham won $70,324 in the May 10 drawing.

Four prizes of $50,000 were awarded this week:

- Linda Darnall and Stacy Darnall of Lexington ($200 Million Blowout)
- Gertrude Mingledorf of Charlotte (Junior Big Ol' Bucks)
- Subbaro Oruganti of Charlotte (Extreme Millions)
- Shelly Seymore of Elizabeth City (5/6 Cash 5 draw)

Big Winners

William Jones of Winston-Salem won the top prize of $20,000 on a Funky 5's ticket. Eleven other players scratched their way to $10,000:

- Charles Clauden of Reidsville ($1,000,000 Taxes Paid)
- Peggy Fields of Fayetteville (The Big $5 Ticket)
- Mechella Kenan of Goldsboro (20X The Cash)

- Bobby Locke of High Point (The Big $5 Ticket)
- Concepcion Moreau of China Grove (20X The Cash)
- Rajaee Obeid of Greenville (Mega Fortune)
- Derikia Robinson of Kernersville ($10,000 Taxes Paid)
- Bradley Rutledge of Charlotte ($5,000,000 Mega Cash)
- Shamika Taylor of Charlotte ($5,000,000 Mega Cash)

Thomas O'Quinn of Cameron scratched off the top prize of $7,000 on a Lucky 7's ticket.

A total of 17 prizes of $5,000 were paid out this week, three of them to players from Charlotte. The other 14 went to winners in Concord, Hampstead, Hayesville, Hillsborough, Kannapolis, Louisburg, Lucama, Morehead City, Morganton, Raleigh, Robbins, Rocky Mount, Smithfield, and Vale.

Year-to-date, there have been no prizes of greater than $10,000 for the Westernmost counties. What's up with that?NC Lottery
We've had plenty of winners in the western part of the state over the past six months. Every part of the state wins its fair share of prizes given how often folks there are taking a chance to win. If everyone in the state moved to the mountains, all the lottery winners would be from the mountains. If everyone moved to Charlotte, all the lottery winners would be from Charlotte. But everyone's odds would be the same - just more neighbors :)

For what it's worth, those who say that the big winners come from the larger metropolitan areas such as Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro are not completely correct. Nash County had (2) of the 10m (Ultimate Millions) winners. (1) of them was in a small town called SpringHope (population 1,316), and the other was a resident of Nashville (population 5,464) that purchased his ticket just outside of Nashville. I also know one of the 4m winners from Wilson (population 49,000) that won about 3 years ago. Unfortunately I'm not either of the above winners, but they are all close to my location. So the BIG wins do come in small places when it comes to scratch offs.

There isn't a hold up. Second-chance drawings are scheduled based on ticket sales. All the prize money you can win instantly or through second-chance drawings come from ticket sales. As soon as we have a date we'll be glad to share that with everyone :-)

I've played all year with no winners, was hoping for ncel200 tickets like last year. All that lottery money they collected they should have issued free ticket codes. Done with the lottery for good.

Congrats to winners. My time's a comin'. And to those who argue that scratch off winners are always in more popular areas, well, let's do some math. A roll of 100 tickets at 100 locations in an area with 1000 players would yield an average of 10 tickets per player. But that same 10000 tickets in an area of 100 people would need 100 tickets bought per player. So I believe that the lottery distribution of scratch offs is random based on when a selling location needs more ordered. It's not like they just keep potentially millions laying around for any convience store personnel to just grab and go. They are reloaded by lottery officials. So if that official has to visit the same store multiple times, the Chan es of a winner from that store are greater than one only visited once. Did I get close NC Lottery? NC Lottery
Yes. We understand that folks want to be reassured they have the same chance as as anyone else. Moving to a big city just means more neighbors, not better odds to win :-)

When some asks why certain areas like Raleigh and Charlotte has more winner the lottery response always is that they have more people which is true for games that are not scratch off games because if the scratch off tickets were distributed randomly and there were only a certain number of scratch off tickets that had the jack pot prizes the number of people in an area makes no difference it should depend on the luck of the distribution location not on the the size of a city or town, So your explanation is only good for non scratch off games. It seems to me that the jackpot winner scratch off tickets winners are made sure to come from a larger populated area

Again all the scratch gane off winners were located in central North Carolina especially around the Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte areas while the southeastern counties near the South Carolina border from Union,Anson,Richmond, Scotland, Robeson, Columbus and Brunswich are left out again of scratch off winners making me think that when the North Carolina Lottery officials distribute supposedly randomly to all the locations that sell lottery tickets that the winning tickets are made sure to be winners in the larger cities like Raleigh and Charlotte and the closest

(LUCKE-ZONE REPLIED) "We hear you. In our 2017 Multiplier games, the amount won with multiplier is at least double the cost of the ticket on the $2, $5, $10 games. On the $1 game, the 5X first appears on a $5 win, 5x the cost of ticket." --- Will this eventually be incorporated to the $20 scratchers also? Hey Lucke Zone, It would help to explain to players of scratch off tickets that there is an amount code printed on the ticket if it is a winner. For example, if you scratch off the entire cover surface you should see the letters "T" "E" "N" printed if it's a $10 winner, "T" "W" "O" for a $2 winner, etc...it's a scattered pattern but it will match the amount won...

Question- I was notified by email to do a survey Nelson Russell about the lotto a month ago in return I would receive couple hundred entries to use toward my account in the next few weeks?Can I ask where are my points /entries after 1 month I do not see these???I also visited one of the few stores around here that still sell the OCT 2014 $20 200 million blowout they still had month prior,I went to purchase one and was told they no longer have it ,they just wanted to get "rid of the roll"" in other words keep selling duds for $20 to get money from ppl,this I assume is example of retailers and or NCEL ripping you off with obsolete tics,obviously if u have no so called big winnings off of this after 3 yrs then it's not there or in one of those "lucky spots" NC Lottery

Geography doesn't determine where players win. Luck does. It's not easier to win the lottery in a big place than a small one. There are just more people taking a chance to win there. This report is only one week of winning. If you read about our winners regularly, you'll see winners from Western North Carolina.

You must be a member of the Lucke-Zone and in your account when you scan your ticket. For second-chance drawings, you are automatically entered into the drawing. You use your points accumulated from scanning tickets to choose the Lucke-Rewards promotions you want to enter. So that is manual. Why is the scratch tickets in NC designed in away that when unveiling a (multiplying symbol) such as 2x, 5x, 10 or 50x, sometimes more often than not, the prize amount is less than the ticket cost. As the fun is always to match numbers, reveal a instant win symbol, and especially the multiplier symbol only to see that with the multiplier symbol to equal a minimum prize or "break even" win. I travel a lot with my job and play the lottery in multiple states, Va. especially. From what I have experienced the other states multiplier prize amounts are at minimum the ticket purchase amounts. It is often discouraging even though it is considered a winner, "break even" that on a $20 scratcher you get a (10x) symbol only to uncover a $2 prize amount to equal a $20 "break even" win. The lottery posts the names of the winners once they claim their prizes. Use the filters on the Winner's page to see results of previous drawings. The lottery will announce and post the date of the Ultimate Millions second chance drawing when it is set. The game is designed to last two to three years. Drawings are scheduled over the lifetime of the game.

No. The lottery doesn't know your numbers. Quick Pick numbers are randomly selected when you pick that option. You are the only one who knows what your numbers are. The lottery only knows the winners when they show up with their tickets to claim their prizes.

Sure. The lottery has had big winners with both its subscription service and Play At The Pump. It doesn't matter how or where you buy your tickets. Good luck can happen however you buy.

The lottery picks winners in random drawings. The odds depend on how many entries the drawing gets. If you check out winners on the website, you'll see Winston-Salem addresses there. Luck can happen anywhere.

The lottery starts notification soon after the drawing and that should be completed within 48 hours. The names of winners are posted on the website after they claim their prizes.

Does a military member living in NC but a resident of TX pay NC taxes when they win? NC Lottery
The lottery would do tax withholdings based on the minimum required, 25 percent federal and 5.499 percent for state. That is just withholdings, not the actual taxes that you pay when you file your income taxes. If you are from out-of-state and you win a big prize, the lottery would recommend that you talk to a tax preparer form your state to determine what taxes you would pay on your win.

Why do the Doubler Doubler say 4times the stated price and when you get one it only pays $2.00. 4x1=4. I cashed one on Wednesday and only got 2.00. I have one now that I am waiting for an answer.NC Lottery
Check out the How To Play information. You win four times the amount when you match 2 like amounts and get a "MONEY ROLL' symbol. Not all wins are 4x.Just that type. If you match two like amounts and get a "STACK OF BILLS' symbol, you win double the amount. And if you match three like amounts, you win that amount. If that's not how your ticket turned out, then please call Customer Service at (877) 962-7529.
