Multistate jackpots make news, Cash 5 tops $1 million

Three jackpots that were already large to start the week have grown even larger as the weekend draws near.

The biggest buzz revolves around the multistate jackpots for Mega Millions and Powerball, which stand at $382 million and $356 million respectively. The jackpots are notable, not only for their size; for the first time, both potential windfalls exceed of $300 million at the same time.

Folks enthusiastic about Cash 5, North Carolina's jackpot game, are seeing the jackpot grow into seven-figure territory for the third time this year. It is an estimated $1.1 million heading into Thursday's drawing.

In January, three Cash 5 tickets split a $1,065,423 jackpot. Then in June, a family of 17 had the one lucky ticket to win $1,701,813 - the biggest jackpot in the game's history.

Will one or more jackpots be won in the days to come? We'll be watching with everyone to find out. Good luck!

We understand your suggestion about moving more of the prize money into the match 4 out of 5 numbers. To do that, the amount of money going into the jackpot would have to be reduced significantly. Our product management team reads the blog so they'll see your idea too. Scratch-off tickets pay out as much as 78% in prizes. We wish every ticket could win a prize, but prize money comes from tickets that don't win prizes. That's just how games of chance work. We hope you'll only play if you're enjoying yourself. If it's a source of frustration then it might be better to take a break. Games of chance can be fun but it takes luck to win a prize big or small.

Funny jackpot rolled from $798K to $1 million one night. Then next draw only raised $1mil to @$1.1 million. I'd bet my life just Charlotte & Raleigh sold $1mill in ONE DAY in tickets. Joke. And hit 4/5 paid $217.00. Don't reply please. It's oldNC Lottery

@notsharon. I always check the cash5 results 1st thing in the morning, around 6 or 7 AM. It will always tell you if it has been won. Sometimes it will not say where till 9 or 10. That's why I like looking as cash5 latest & past results, it will always say what town/city the winning ticket was sold at. None of the other draw game results will tell you that.

Hello - It is up to everybody if they want to buy a lottery ticket or not. Last year, players won $1.54 billion in prizes and the fun they had taking a chance to win allowed the lottery to earn $622 million for education. We appreciate that players and local stores make that possible.

Do not change Cash 5. It is then only game I play, because the odds are the best for the top prize. If you have to up the 1-4 then increase the price of the ticket. I do not play powerball or mega millions often because odds are ridiculous. Thanks

Oh well, I got 1 LFL tic I picked the LB (3) , QP the others & won $6. Replayed a $5 cash5 , had 2 #s on 2 lines & 3 #s on another & won $6 . 3rd time this week I had 3 out of 5 on the cash5, I can live with that. Where's Sanford NC ? One ticket won the big cash5 there last night. NC Lottery

I see someone won the cash 5 last night...congrats to whomever it was ! I bought 2 tickets, won 1 buck. : ( I still say you guys need to up the prize winnings on that game for anyone getting 1, to especially 4, numbers right. Rarely buy those tickets due to the low prize amounts for getting 1-4 numbers right but the 1.1 ml. jackpot was hard to resist a try at it this time around. NC Lottery

In the Cash 5 game how is it that if you match 4 numbers you almost always end up with around $200 no matter how big the jackpot is or how many people you split it with just seems a little rude to meNC Lottery
Every lottery game is designed differently. In Cash 5, 60.54% of the prize money goes toward the jackpot. Players who match 4 out of 5 numbers split 12% of the prize money. Players who match 3 out of 5 numbers split 8.4% of the prize money. And players who match 2 out of 5 win $1. If players who match 4 out of 5 won a larger percentage of the prize pool, then prizes at one or more of the other prize levels would have to be reduced.

@notsharon, it's 20. 18 for the xthecash & 2 for the jeep. I don't know how this thing keeps ticken , but it does. latest upgrade was windows 7. old thing won't except 8 or 10. Trust me if I win enuff my new pc will be Turbo powered. I only had 3 entries for the jeep, don't need one. My turbo powered 11 yr. old Subaru Baja is doin just fine. Good luck to you

Dreary day so I've been on my PC all day. Yes not Sharon my old fashion 15yr old PC. New kitties playing at my feet. Any way just checked the winners page again. It looks like all 6 lucke-rewards winners & all 20 second chance winners for the Aug. 9th drawings have been notified. 26 lucky winners out of over 800 thousand members. I want to reiterate a comment I made several months back to Oreo or Chocolate Chip ( I know it was a cookie). You can play a partial quick pick on all 3 multi state draw games. I do it all the time on the LFL and have been very lucky winning the smaller prizes. You need to do it with a play slip.Even easier is doing it through subscriptions. Once I played 6 as my lucky ball on all 5 lines on a pay slip & QP the 5 main numbers . As luck would have it, 6 was indeed the LB that night and I made out very well. You can reverse that as well, pick your 5 #s and QP the PB, MB or LB. Good luck everyone.

Why don't they increase the payouts on the Cash 5 when it is worth more than 1 million dollars? I had 2 numbers on my ticket and I received $1.NC Lottery
We're glad you asked this question! The prize payout for Cash 5 works this way: 60.54% of the prize money goes toward the jackpot. The prize money for players who match 4/5 split up 12% of the prize money, players who match 3/5 split up 8.4% of the prize money, and players who match 2/5 win $1, which is usually about 19.06% of the prize money.
