Players win 45 prizes up to $1 million this week

Five players won $150,000 or more this week, including two who came to lottery headquarters to cash in $1 million-winning lottery tickets - including the first in the new Million Dollar Fever game.

James Varnedore of Roanoke Rapids bought his Fever ticket at the New Dixie Mart in his hometown. There are four more top prizes in the game out there.

The other $1 million winner is James McCall, a retiree from Wilmington. He tried his luck on an Extreme Millions ticket he bought at Porter's Neck Country Store on Market Street. All four top prizes of $10 million and 14 prizes of $1 million remain to be claimed.

A craving for a chocolatey snack brought Jeffrey Benfield of Lexington $400,000 worth of good fortune. Benfield stopped by the T & T Convenience on South N. C. 150 and bought the wafer bars along with some scratch-off tickets. While enjoying the snack on bench outside the store, he scratched off The Big $5 Ticket. He could hardly believe his luck when he realized he won the top prize. One top prize is still in the game.

Dewayne Chasten of Magnolia bought a lucky Red Hot Slots ticket at the Express Mart on Mallard Street in Kenansville, making him the game's first top prize winner of $200,000. Three more players could win the top prize.

Samuel Swanson of Lenoir said a love of solving puzzles led him to a $150,000 win. Swanson’s good luck happened when he stopped by the Scotchman Store on Hickory Boulevard in Hudson and bought a Silver & Gold Crossword scratch-off ticket. Swanson patiently scratched it and discovered he won the top prize of $150,000. Two top prizes remain.

Big Winners

Two players won $75,000. Bertin Piedra of Marion won playing Loteria and it was an All American Bucks ticket that landed Edgar Macedo of Bunnlevel his prize.

Five players from central North Carolina won $50,000 in the July 29 Powerball drawing. The winners got their lucky ticket at the Handy Mart on Edwards Road in Princeton, a small town in Johnston County. Looking forward to Saturday's Powerball drawing the jackpot stands tall at $356 million.

A $25,000 winner from the Aug. 4 Mega Millions drawing claimed her winnings this week. Doris Faircloth of Winston-Salem bought her lucky Megaplier ticket at the Circle K on U.S. 64 West in Lexington. Heading into the weekend the Mega Millions jackpot weighs in at $393 million.

Speaking of jackpots, someone who played Cash 5 in Sanford won $1,184,357 - the second-largest jackpot ever won by a single ticket. It was sold at the Circle K on Hawkins Avenue. The biggest single-ticket win the game's history came two months ago when 17 family members from the Hickory area claimed the $1.7 million jackpot they won in the June 3 drawing.

Bhartiben Amin of Asheville won $20,000 on an Ultimate Millions ticket she purchased at the BJ's Food Mart on Michigan Avenue.

Eleven players won $10,000 instantly:

- Bradley Beasley of High Point (Red Hot Slots)
- Alicia Campbell of Fayetteville (Million Dollar Fever)
- Michael Chilson of Winston-Salem ($200 Million Blowout)
- Emma Clements of Weddington (Red Hot Slots)
- Tommy Deville of Clayton (Million Dollar Fever)
- John Hinton of Winterville (20X The Cash)
- Minh Le of Jamestown (Million Dollar Fever)
- Charles Mobley of Charlotte (Millionaire Bucks)
- Darnell Ore of Williamston (Carolina Millions)
- Kirby Shipman of Zirconia (Million Dollar Fever)
- Cynthia Thompson of McLeansville ($200 Million Blowout)

Patricia Carr of Charlotte won the top prize of $7,000 on a Lucky 7's ticket. There are still 13 more top prizes in the game that began in March.

Twenty-three prizes of $5,000 were awarded. Two each went to winners from Charlotte, Concord, Morganton, and Raleigh. The other 15 went to players from: Durham, Belmont, Clayton, Dunn, Goldsboro, Graham, Hoffman, Jamestown, Mooresville, Newton, Sanford, Waxhaw, Whiteville, Wilmington, and Zebulon.

It was a big week of lottery luck. We hope your weekend is a fun and safe one, maybe even a lucky one.

@Turbo...hey, congratulations on your wins! So sorry you weren't the winner of the jeep though. :(

8/18/2017 11:54 - David W.

Nanak, the same exact thing happened to me. The NCEL retailer clerks, especially in WNC, will steal every ticket code from tickets I've cashed in. Since then, I've made it a priority to enter all winning codes first- especially when there's a second chance drawing tied to the code!NC Lottery
Anytime you have a concern about something that happened at a specific lottery retailer, please contact our security division at 888-732-6235.

8/18/2017 10:50 - Denver G.

@NOTSHARON- Great minds think alike, I do the exact same thing. Some of those clerks will smile to your face, tell you to have a blessed day, then scan the entry code from your ticket with their smart phone before you even get to your car!!! Side bar here, I haven't bought a scratch off since June. Got an Extreme this morn (tic #29) & won $100. Came home entered my codes, went back got an Ultimate (tic #23) and won $200. WOOP WOOP. I needed those wins, fun $$$ was getting low.

8/17/2017 09:52 - Alvin W.

I don't think the ones that print the new five dollar tickets have any with the HOT sign on them . I have got alot of these tickets and have not got the first one with a HOT sign on it . I think there are a bunch of lying going on with these scratch tickets !!!!!NC Lottery
We've already had players claim two of the four top prizes offered in the Red Hot Slots game. In fact, the latest came in on Tuesday. Check out his story here: http://www.nc-educationlottery.org/news/2017/8/15/Guilford-County-man-to-fix-up-and-pay-off-house-with-200000-lottery-prize

8/17/2017 03:23 - Tony T.

@NANAK...those cashiers/clerks will eat those numbers up. I personally NEVER scratch my tickets at the store/ turn them in on the spot ... come home & scratch 'em off then input my #'s on home computer. After that, I usually take any winning ticket ( very few, small & far between ) to yet another store to cash in on any winnings I may have gotten.

8/17/2017 08:04 - Wanda H.

Cashed in a winning ticket and jotted down the numbers so I could enter it for a second chance drawing. When I tried to enter it I got the "someone else has already entered this number". I guess the cashier at the store used my ticket to try his own luck. That sucks.NC Lottery
Anytime you have a concern about something that happened at a particular store that sells lottery tickets, please either call our customer service team between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 877-962-7529 or contact our security division 24 hours a day at 888-732-6235.

8/16/2017 10:13 - Robin K.

Anytime I buy a ticket, it's just a hope and a dream. If I win, I usually use the money I won to buy some more tickets because I didn't have the money before, so I don't feel like I'm losing anything. My BIG win has been 20.00, lol, so clearly I'm not breaking the bank. That keeps it fun for me with no regrets. Good luck this week everybody!

8/16/2017 01:33 - Jennifer H.

Is a store owner a vendor? In February 2017, Neil Barnett won $4 million with a Ruby Red 7’s instant game ticket purchased from the store HE OWNS.NC Lottery
Lottery vendor refers to companies the lotterty contracts with for instant ticket printing and gaming network services. While there is no law in North Carolina barring retailers or their employees from playing the lottery, more than 80 percent of all lottery retailers in North Carolina report having a “No Play on Duty” policy for employees, including 99 percent of corporate retailers such as grocery and convenience store chains. Lottery prizes are only awarded when there is no evidence to suggest something is wrong.

8/16/2017 12:20 - David W.

Lucke zone was just caught lying! "...lottery vendors are not allowed to play the lottery in North Carolina." Yes they are and yes they do! What about the sales clerk who bought a $4 million ticket at the N&N Express Mart before her shift last year?NC Lottery
Sorry we were not more clear with our language. We mean vendors who contract with the lottery to provide ticket and gaming services. More than 80 percent of all lottery retailers in North Carolina report having a “No Play on Duty” policy for employees, including 99 percent of corporate retailers such as grocery and convenience store chains. Lottery prizes are only awarded when there is no evidence to suggest something is wrong.

8/15/2017 08:19 - Zachary H.

87superglide, save your money! I have no doubt in my mind they put out a "string" of tickets that pay little to nothing to build up revenue. The further into the game (towards the end) is when they'll put out the winning tickets. BUT those winning tickets are probably purchased by Lottery employees or people contracted by the Lottery Commision. They know EXACTLY where those winning tickets are at ALL times. Hence why it's never really a BIG deal when someone wins a substantial amount of money. My advice, wait until further in the game. You'll stand more of a chance of getting a higher pay out. NC Lottery
Winning and non-winning tickets are distributed throughout packs of tickets for the entire printing run of the game. Advertised odds are accurate but vary as people win prizes. Nobody knows where a winning instant ticket will show up until someone scratches it off. Lottery employees, their immediate family members and lottery vendors are not allowed to play the lottery in North Carolina.

8/15/2017 01:59 - Mike S.

LZ - there are no $4M prizes in this game only $10M and $1M top prizes. I'll have to check out that 78% figure.NC Lottery
Thanks, 87superglide, for the catch. We fixed the response. You are right. Top prize of $10 million and second prize is $1 million. Appreciate you help.

8/15/2017 12:16 - Zachary H.

I'm guessing the Lottery Commision is hurting for money!!!! For a game (Extreme Millions) to be out well over 6 months and not one top prize winner and hardly any 1 million dollar winners, you can tell the Lottery is 100% RIGGED. I can't begin to tell you how many of those tickets I've purchased and not had even a break even winner. Fortunately I have the extra money to buy these tickets, but when you purchase 12, yes I said 12, tickets in a row without a winner, it makes you suspicious. The Lottery is supposed to be fun and they are failing miserably at it! Un-rig the Lottery and you'll get a customer back!NC Lottery
Extreme Millions is built to pay out 78% in prizes. We would very much like to meet a $1 million or $10 million winner in the game to share the winners' stories. With games of chance, there is never a guarantee you will win more than you wager, sometimes it just takes one ticket. We hope you'll play knowing it takes luck to beat the odds to win a prize, big or small.

8/15/2017 11:35 - Tony T.

@JOHNDEERE, $ 500.00 would be a big winning for me! ( can't seem to inch past 2 $ 50.00 winnings over many many years time. )

8/15/2017 07:56 - Mark H.

I won $500.00 on the drawings in April but I've not won nothing after that. If I could just win something big I would be so good to people that know me. Maybe I'll win something else but I'm not going to get my hopes up. If I ever won something big I would build a assisted living facility. Maybe one dayNC Lottery
Glad to hear you had good luck and wish you the best in the upcoming drawings.

8/14/2017 07:35 - Frank M.

Since my phone didn't ring, I assume it's not you.lol

8/14/2017 07:22 - fred t.

8/14/2017 02:12 - Arthur J.

I have read many statements , from people claiming they never win. guess what? neither have I, as for money spent? well I have $about $4,000 in points, Have had much more sents starting, haven, t won anything, I spend a lot, as do others. It,s all luck, I,am pretty sure . a game of pure chance , so how about good luck to all, and good luck to me, we can d0 this, Hang in there.

8/14/2017 11:20 - Elisabeth S.

Congrats to all who have won and people do win all over NC I believe someone won a million dollars in little old Hayesville I win daily even if its a dollar I always appreciate it because I plan on winning bigger & betterNC Lottery
You're right! Kenneth Sutton Jr. of Hayesville won $1 million in December of last year. Here's his story: http://bit.ly/2uCqTCo

8/14/2017 06:48 - jackie w.

My husband is still buying extreme $30 tickets and all he gets is $00. What is up with this are they all just for the second- chance drawing. He bought 5 over the weekend and not even a break even scratch.NC Lottery
You can take a look at the odds of winning prizes at various levels and all the prizes remaining in the Ultimate Millions and Extreme Millions games on our website. In the Extreme Millions game, for example, the approximate odds of winning $100 are 1 in 21.72. The next prize level up from that is $200, and the odds of winning that prize are approximately 1 in 250. There are 526,079 prizes of $100 still in the game, and 47,765 prizes of $200 still in the game. It's all a matter of luck to get a lucky ticket.

8/13/2017 11:16 - Mamie A.

Does anybody playing via subscription ever win?? NC Lottery
Although sales last year for games available through subscription were less than 1% of total sales of those games, we have had a $5,000 Lucky for Life winner, a $15,000 Mega Millions winner, a $20,000 Powerball winner, and a $149,970 Cash 5 jackpot winner. You have the same chance of winning playing through subscription as buying a ticket at a store. Good luck!

8/13/2017 05:23 - Vivian n.

Congrats i am next i am claiming it now

8/13/2017 03:33 - Mackenzy E.

Where can I find out the winners from the Jeep Second Chance drawings? Only the current drawing is showing on the "Winners" page.NC Lottery

I dream of having a lucky spell and having a nice success story for some folks one weekend who knows maybe a windfall of big cash winnings for me this weekend. Anyway can't win if don't play.let's have some fun

@player, ONE OFF =loser, yep...seems to be the case!

8/13/2017 09:13 - Holli S.

if a purchase is made via the online subscription service and you are a winner, are you automatically notified?NC Lottery
Yes. By email.

8/13/2017 08:06 - Robert W.

Congratulations to all the lucky winners. Mabe one da day I'll win a little.

8/13/2017 07:45 - David B.

Has anyone else noticed on scratch off tickets that if you're numbers are one off from the winning numbers these tickets are always losers? Once I see the first one off number I know that ticket is a loser!!

8/13/2017 06:32 - Ray M.

Best wishes on your win... and thanks for your taxes out of your win also. We hope you spend it wisely and remember those in need. You have not changed, only your bank account has... Hope you have a continued blessed life.

8/13/2017 03:20 - Gary C.

8/12/2017 11:41 - Tracey W.

Great ??

8/12/2017 07:59 - Ivella B.

Hi! Congrats on the lucky winners! Patiently waiting on my lucky day! Just wondering how are the winners picked on this site? Is it who has the most points or is it just random selected by email? Just curious...I been entering my non winning tickets and scratch offs for 5 years and NEVER won yet...NC Lottery
It would be against state law and the lottery's rules to automatically award prizes to who has the most entries. That would be totally unfair to everyone else :) Random drawings are done using a random number generator. The system is blind to whose entries belong to which member until after the drawing is done. It's like entering a raffle. One ticket gives you a chance to win, more tickets give you more chances to win. Good luck!

8/12/2017 07:55 - Ricky W.

Congratulations to all

8/12/2017 07:19 - Arthur J.

Question? Can the lotto devilope an alert if we win on the lucky-zone site saying that we have won a prize,i belive people would more then likely check thair account on the LZ then wait fot the current 3 options of contacting that the lottery has in place!?NC Lottery
We will forward your suggestion to the program managers.

8/12/2017 07:03 - mark g.

Question? Do points expire after @ a point in time or are they good for how ever long?NC Lottery
Your Lucke-Rewards points do not expire :)

8/12/2017 04:05 - Louis G.

Congratulations to all the winners.

8/12/2017 03:46 - brandon d.

Waiting patiently for a win

8/12/2017 03:01 - Loretta B.

How would I know if I won on second chance LuckEZone NC Lottery
The question we get most often has to do with winner notification and winner announcements as it relates to Lucke-Rewards and promotional drawings. Winners are typically notified by email within 48 hours. So for a drawing held on a Wednesday, winners can expect a message by 5 p.m. Friday. If a winner does not respond to email notification, we will follow up with a telephone call and, if necessary, send certified mail.

8/12/2017 11:40 - Sandra H.

Majority of winners are East of where i live even second chance drawings i live in Waynesville N.C.I no we have had winners but 90 % are from down east We have quit playingvthe lottery uf i find a ticket laying around i pick it up and scan it not worth blowing my hard earned money down the drain Interested to see if you post thisNC Lottery
The lottery does not censor comments that are critical or accusatory of the lottery. It's not easier to win the lottery east of where you live, there are just a lot more people east of where you live taking a chance to win. It takes luck to beat the odds to win a prize big or small no matter where you play the lottery.

8/12/2017 10:46 - mark g.

How long is it going to be before the lotto rolls out the scanning tickets for win results on the luckyzone site?NC Lottery
As soon as we have a date to announce, we promise to share it with you :)

8/12/2017 10:46 - Denver G.

Dang, then they bought it from the vending machine, cause that's all the HT store in Denver has. They stopped selling over the counter a few years back.

Happy Weekend everyone. First I want to say congrats to last nights cash5 winners that split the *Estimated Top Prize (total) for this date: $50,000 Top Prize Winner sold in Denver, Fayetteville. I had been replaying the same $5 cash5 ticket ALL week, but since it was won on Thur. I decided not to. I would of had 4 out of 5 again. last nights # was 4-6-10-24-41. The ticket I chose not to play on line B had 6-10-24-26-41. All I can do is shrug it off. I would have been sick to my stomach if it had all 5. LZ, could you please tell us what stores the tics were sold at. NC Lottery
Hi Turbo. Friday's $50,000 Cash 5 jackpot was split by tickets sold at the Harris Teeter on Cross Center Road in Denver and at the RJ Tobacco Mart on Hope Mills Road in Fayetteville. Good luck on your next ticket :)

8/12/2017 07:04 - Tiffany H.

Congrats to all still in the game and waiting for my big day God bless you all

8/12/2017 02:47 - andy k.

Friends with my one-night bought seven consecutive books of the same book of scratch offs $2,100 worth guess what we lost on every single book we bought scratch offs are a joke the lottery is a joke someone's making money it's not the playersNC Lottery
Hi Andy - The lottery does not recommend playing by buying rolls of tickets. With games of chance, there is never a guarantee you will win more than you wager. Sometimes it just takes one lucky ticket to win. Last year players in North Carolina won more than $1.54 billion in prize money, which made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $622 million for education.

8/12/2017 12:18 - Charlene W.

Map looks the same every week, same ole winning places

8/11/2017 10:58 - Barbara p.

Hope to win soon!

8/11/2017 09:36 - Gregory F.

I have been buying lottery tickets all this year and I only won 50 dollars all this year.I been in Baltimore this week and won 500 dollars this week can't win any big money in Ahoskie nc.wish my luck would change in n.c.NC Lottery
We're happy for you that you had good luck and hope that your next lucky ticket is in North Carolina.

***************SAME AS ALWAYS NEVER ANY WINNERS FROM ASHEBORO******************NC Lottery
Hi Steven - You post this comment almost every week. And almost every week we try to share a link with you to information about winners from Asheboro. It is not any easier or harder to win the lottery depending on where you live. If everyone in North Carolina moved to Asheboro, then all lottery winners would be from Asheboro. But every individual would still have the same chance of finding a lucky ticket. Here is the link again, we hope you see it: http://bit.ly/2wDTu7t

8/11/2017 07:33 - mainor m.

Way can I get a winner

8/11/2017 06:44 - Kenneth F.

No one from Conover ever hits lol maybe I'll be the first.NC Lottery
We've had lots of winners from Conover: http://bit.ly/2wDTu7t

8/11/2017 04:30 - David M.

One thing is for sure. You will never have big winners from the triangle ....NC Lottery
We have winners from the Triangle often. Not because it's easier to win the lottery there than anywhere else, but simply because of the number of people taking a chance to win. In fact, in this very blog, there were $50,000 Powerball winners from the Triangle area, a $10,000 winner from Clayton, two $5,000 winners from Raleigh, a $5,000 winner from Durham, and a $5,000 winner from Zebulon. Here is a link to just a few more big winners from the area: http://bit.ly/2vP2sl5

?? WHAT A WEEK!!!, Congrats to all who won. I'm still in the game. Maybe I'll have a good week.

8/11/2017 03:10 - monte s.

Putting a limit on the number of purchases that can be made on line is so stupid All it does it make the purchaser use gas and time to go to a store and buy more tickets Get real

8/11/2017 01:46 - m. earl b.

WHY CAN'T I WIN BIG ? `Been playing since the game began. WHY WHY WHY................................$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$NC Lottery
Hi Earl - You know, whether you've played 100 times before or never before, every time you play a game of chance it takes luck to beat the odds to win a prize big or small. We hope you'll only play as long as you're enjoying yourself. If you aren't, it might be good to take a break. We appreciate you as a player but there are so many things more important than lottery games.
