Clinton man to celebrate wedding anniversary with $1 million lottery win

Frank Singleton Jr. of Clinton said he plans to make his wedding anniversary unforgettable after he played the Big Money Super Ticket and won $1 million.

“My wife and I have been married for eleven years,” Singleton said. “We’re going to the Dominican Republic for our anniversary, and I’m going to make it extra special for her.”

Singleton’s good fortune happened Friday when he stopped by the Friendly Mart on North East Boulevard in Clinton and bought the $10 scratch-off ticket. He brought the ticket home and started scratching.

“I didn’t think it was real,” Singleton said.

It didn’t feel that way until he claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had the choice of taking an annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $417,009.

Big Money Super Ticket launched in December with four top prizes of $1 million. One top prize remains.

Ticket sales from instant games like Big Money Super Ticket make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million a year for the state.

Looks like I should go and try my luck in Danville, Va. Lately I win nothing, and I mean nothing at all, not even small prizes. And I live not far from Raleigh. When the lottery just started I definitely won more often and larger amounts. I am not complaining. I don't live to play lottery, and I am not an addict. I just state the facts. Maybe there is the way for the NCEL to have more prizes for us-not huge ones, but at least something.

Doesn’t this lump sum payout count as “ordinary income” in the current year that it was won? As a result, there’s a sizable hike in earnings However, from a taxation standpoint, there’s an adjustment necessary when calculating the following year’s income, which was falsely elevated & unlikely to repeat itself, since salary from normal job earnings remains same/similar. And since previous year’s taxes are used for the following year’s withholdings, this jump to the highest tax bracket of 39.6% will follow this person into that very next year, such that there’ll be little income from the average person’s paycheck received from their job, no? So they will have to rely upon, dip into & live off of these winnings the entire following year, so as to offset the higher taxes imposed that are falsely elevated, correct? So, lump sum haunts a person as a result, annuities have far less taxation problems, no?

While I am so happy for all who win I am so disgusted with NCEL. I have been to Danville, Va. to Speedy's and Cluster Springs, Va. to the Apple Mart within the last three weeks and won a little over $1000.00. While at the Apple Mart today my husband and I spent $60.00 and between both of us won over 500.00 . Yes, I know it only takes 1 ticket to win big but when you spend $100.00 and win nothing that is called losing big. You folks need to go to Farmville, Va. and take some lessons and get an education on how to keep the money here in N.C.

For the last few weeks when I enter tickets I have to scan them twice to get points. It looks like they take, but I don't get points, have to scan them again. NC Lottery
Paul- If you call 1-855-767-1863 , someone should be able to help you figure out why you're having to scan your tickets twice.
