Apex man celebrates $200,000 lottery prize

Rafael Gutierrez of Apex had luck on his side when he played the Jeep scratch-off game and won $200,000.

His good fortune happened when he stopped by the Circle K on East Williams Street in Apex and bought the $5 ticket.

Gutierrez claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

The Jeep game launched in June with four top prizes of $200,000. Since Gutierrez won the last top prize, the lottery will take steps to end the game. People who played the Jeep game can still enter their tickets into a second-chance drawing for a chance to win a Jeep brand vehicle. The date for that drawing will be announced soon.

Ticket sales from instant games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million a year for education.

How would a person know they won in the second chance drawing, would they receive a phone call and or email stating they won ,and if call is placed and they get no answer is a message left with a call back number also how long would they have to claim the prize. NC Lottery
Winners are notified via the phone number and/or email address that they provided in their accounts. First, they get an email, then a phone call, and finally a certified letter. Winners have 30 days after notification to claim their prize.

Sooooo you can request more then the minimum tax be with held, so to help/prevent you from having a surprise bill come filing time next year? NC Lottery
Unfortunately we just withhold minimum state and federal taxes, as we cannot give advice or consult on any tax-related issue. But in this case, the winner was a primary resident of another country, So, by law, we withhold 30%.

There was more withheld than just minimum state and federal tax withholdings.
