Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot stands at $1.6 billion

With no jackpot winner in Friday’s drawing, the Mega Millions jackpot will ascend to a world-record level of $1.6 billion on Tuesday night. The cash option will be $905 million.

Friday’s drawing produced four big wins in North Carolina, occurring in Clayton, Raleigh, Weaverville and Fayetteville. They included:

$20,000 Multiplier ticket sold at The Grocery Bag on N.C. 42 East in Clayton.
$10,000 ticket sold at the Super Stop on Mitchell Mill Road in Raleigh.
$10,000 ticket sold at the Citistop on Stockton Road in Weaverville.
$10,000 ticket sold at the FastTrip on Yadkin Road in Fayetteville.

Congratulations to those lucky winners. You can pick up your prize at any regional lottery office when they open on Monday.

Nationally, the drawing produced more than 12 million prize-winning tickets, including a $3.4 million win in California, a $2 million win in Texas, and 13 additional $1 million wins.

The previous record jackpot occurred more than two and half years ago when the Powerball jackpot hit $1.58 billion in January 2016.

The current Powerball jackpot continues to grow today. The jackpot for Saturday’s drawing increased Friday to $470 million or $268.8 million cash. It is the 8th largest jackpot in the Powerball game.

Together, the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpot add up to more than $2 billion.

There’s never been a time like this before for the nation’s two jackpot games.

To Jackie. CM has been saying the same thing for over 6 years now with no proof or data what so ever. He goes by what he sees in his town, how big or small or where ever that might be. I believe he also goes by the pictures of winners on the high lights page. If anyone bothers to actually click on the individual games you will notice 99% of the winners do not get their picture taken. There is NO reason to assume one ethnic group spends more or wins more then another. The color of money is green !!!!!!

This is for Charles M. Why is it everything nowadays is turned into a racial matter? I live in a small city just about at the Virginia border and I have never heard one single African-American speak of this . There are lots of African-Americans winning here and lots of whites losing and I am one of them. There is a lot I don't like about the lottery but I keep complaining and losing and keep on playing. My suggestion is don't play if you have to think it is a racial thing. I wish I had won but I will one day, until then keep spending.

When if ever, has someone from N C won the Mega Millions Jackpot? With the numbers being that high why is it a person from N C hasn’t won a prize of a Million or more during all these drawings for this particular time. There sure are a lot of Trusts and Groups that have won in the past.NC Lottery
Hey Linda! We've had two Mega Millions jackpot winners so far. James Jones won $57 million in October 2011 and Mike Manheim won $12 million in July 2010. We have also had 23 winns of $1 million or more. We also get smaller Mega Millions wins on a more regular basis -- for Friday's drawing, we had four $10,000 winners!

If the jackpot is $1.6 billion dollars why is the lump sum only $905 million where is the rest of that money going. Then you all turn around and tax the lump sum you all are getting over on people.NC Lottery
Hey Tracy, Folks ask about this a lot, so we wanted to share some details! A winner has the option of an annuity paid out over 29 years, or the lump sum of a lesser amount. The difference between the two numbers is based off of the amount of interest the lump sum would make over that 29 year period. Regarding the taxes for lottery prizes, we are required by law to withhold the minimum state and federal taxes from all big lottery wins, and those taxes would be withheld whether they chose the lump sum or the annuity.

its sad to say but we all know where the jackpots are going to win for the Mega millions and Powerball in the rich cites And its very sad how they let only 1 person win all that money congrats to the winners next week in Flordia or somewhere on an Island,that's where the jackpot always wins somewhere far off NC Lottery

Hey, Terry. It said PENDING until all states have reported. No one won the $1 billion jackpot on Friday. Estimates for the Tuesday jackpot are $1.6 billion. That's the largest ever.

You gotta love that double taxation! You purchase tickets with money that you have left over after the state of N.C. and the Federal Government taxed you to death on your paycheck and then they still come back with their hands out for more. Next tax will be on the air that you breathe.

No. Winner has option of collecting prize as an annuity with 30 payments or as a lump sum. Tax withholding would occur every year with the annuity payment or one time with the cash payment. In North Carolina, the tax withholding is 24 percent for federal and 5.499 percent for state.

just wondering how did someone in California win $3.4 million? do they have a different pay scale? [Reply] Yes. In California, they chose to not have fixed prizes with Mega Millions but pay on a pari-mutuel basis.
