$181,954 Cash 5 jackpot helps Conover man fulfill dream of finishing school

Darius Grant of Conover said he plans to use a $181,954 Cash 5 jackpot to make his dream of finishing his college education come true.

“School is expensive,” Grant said. “I had to stop because of financial reasons, but now I can go back and finish my sports management degree. It feels great to be able to do this.”

Grant’s good fortune started when he stopped by the Circle K on Conover Boulevard West in Conover and bought a ticket for Friday’s drawing.

He found out he won just after midnight when he checked the numbers online.

“I couldn’t believe it at first,” Grant said. “I just kept thinking, ‘I must be dreaming.’”

Grant wasn’t dreaming, and claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $128,279.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com.

A new version of the game began earlier this month, which means starting jackpots are now $100,000. They will grow by at least $10,000 if no one wins. The starting jackpot for tonight’s drawing is $120,000.

Is there a reason the NC Lottery doesn't leave the history of the Cash 5 winners on the winners page like Pick 4 so consumers can go back and look at the trend/bias for winning locations? It seems like finding the older cash 5 winners are hard to find being hidden in older blogs for some reason. NC Lottery

@NC S. We hope you can understand that we think testing is a very important part of the draw process. Regarding your question on the ball sets, all the ball sets are the same. We have multiple sets and then randomly pick one set to add an additional layer of security to the draw process. What? You do 3 pre-draws to make sure the machine is functioning properly-seems like you're putting more wear and tear if your worried about failure/longevity. That's like someone digging 3 holes with an excavator to make sure the excavator will dig the one whole they need-BS. Then you say, "We have multiple sets of balls so that every drawing has a randomly selected ball set." Are some of the ball sets not random? Seems like 1 set of balls that are locked and secured by the so called audit team would be sufficient if this is truly a random drawing. Any individual with sense see the lack of integrity used behind these drawings. As I've said this is a controlled environment with controlled results.

The drawings are not truly random. Why does the lottery have 6 sets of so called plastic balls and do pre-draws before the actual draw. What king of damage/inconsistencies could happen to real plastic balls in a glass casing to warrant these so called safety measures. NC Lottery
Hi, we conduct pre-draws to ensure that the machine is functioning properly and there are no other concerns with it or the ball set that have been chosen at random for the drawing. We have multiple sets of balls so that every drawing has a randomly selected ball set. The balls used in our drawings are inspected prior to every use by third party auditors. Additionally, all the balls are weighed and measured to ensure that they comply with standards by the Weights and Measures Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.

We encourage you to come to the WRAL studio and watch the security process for our daily draw games yourself. Wins happen more often in areas with high population simply because far more people are purchasing tickets in those areas.

Why are my comments about lottery officials being arrested/fired for scamming the system. Everyone should be aware and told the truth that the lottery is not truly random as stated, it is computer programmed to have winners in designated areas determined by lottery officials. Look at the stories of lottery officials scamming by programming the system for their benefit/area. Do you think NC Lottery is any different?

If the lottery is truly random as the NC Lottery tries to make you believe why have there been cases where lottery officials have been arrested/fired for rigging the lottery. The lottery is a computer generated game which can be programmed to play out as the officials see fit which is how officials have been fired. There is no integrity in the NC Lottery it is rigged to distributed the wins where they want. As most of us know it's fixed and not truly random why not have the programmers pick different areas instead of the same areas where commissioners and headquarters are located?

@NC S.: We know our players like to know if a winner chose a Quick Pick or their own numbers, so we try to ask them when they come to claim their prize. Whether they choose to share that information is up to them. The simple explanation as to why there are more Quick Pick winners is because there are more tickets sold where a player chose Quick Pick versus their own numbers. Populated areas will always have more players, and in turn more winners--over time! It's as simple as that. The great part about our jackpot games is that if you want to choose your own numbers, you can! So that individual on the island would have the exact same chance of winning whether they chose a Quick Pick or their own numbers--that is, if there is a lottery retailer on the island as well! ;)

The winners of Cash 5 and large scratch offs will continue to go to the same cities the lottery has chosen with its quick pick feature. The quick pick is a tool used by the lottery to dictate which ares will win which is why it's not posted whether or nor a winning ticket was a quick pick. Why do you think the NC Lottery has six sets of Cash 5 balls they pick to use and do pre-draws every night. Then after that 75% of the winners are quick picks in these same areas that always have large scratch offs. I can assure you it's not why the Lottery says. In a true random lottery an individual on a secluded island should have the same chance as one in the most populated area. If you're going play play smart and set a fixed amount you can financially afford because the odds are more against you than stated.NC Lottery

I really think it's not right, it's hardly never descent prize tickets in St.Paul nc , or Parkton nc...you guys keep all the big tickets in bigger cities...people inRaleigh, & charlotte area is constantly winning big prizes, NC Lottery

What does it mean players club? I enter my tickets for the drawings and submit and they are accepted, then I go to enter more drawings am I doing this right, hope so because if I am not I have wasted a lot of tickets and money. NC Lottery
