First $4 million prize in 100X The Cash game won

Serenah Arnett of Winston-Salem became the first person to win the $4 million top prize in the new 100X The Cash game.

Arnett bought the $20 ticket at Walmart on Brookberry Park in Winston-Salem. She claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Winners of the top prize have a choice of taking a $4 million annuity that has 20 payments of $200,000 a year or a lump sum of $2.4 million. She chose the lump sum. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $1.69 million.

100X The Cash launched this month with three top prizes of $4 million and six $1 million prizes. Two $4 million and all six $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.

Ticket sales from games like 100X The Cash make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

I got all excited seeing the new 100x the cash. Embarrassed to say on 2 separate occasions 6 consecutive tickets were all losers. NC Lottery

The odds are the same for each individual ticket. The odds of winning on a scratch-off ticket are printed on the back of the ticket and are for the entire printing run of the game. I am with Kelly H., my husband and I also spend a good amount of money on these $10, $20, and sometimes $30 tickets and can't win anything. Just today we bought 5 of the 100X and 2 Mega Cash. All of these were purchased in Burlington but one which was purchased here in Roxboro where we live. I enjoy playing the lottery but this is ridiculous, can't even win a break-even amount. Come on guys all of us here in Person County are getting tired of throwing money in someone's pocket besides our own. Oh and I did not see where Kelly used any potential foul language. Way to go Serenah.

Why don't they leave the Carolina cash 5 at 100 thousand after each winning? The 50 thousand after taxes is not a lot. It would give people chances to win bigger money. NC Lottery

A BIG congratulations Serenah, very happy for you. My next remark is for the MCEL, after reading the news blog and someone asked did the payout end at someone's death or what. You said it still is paid out over the 20 years and goes to whoever is named in will or the estate. Wouldn't the 20 years make it hard for someone to close out a will or an estate, just wondering. Your question on wills and estates is probably best directed to an attorney with expertise in that area. But generally, once the will specifies who should get the annuity payments, then the lottery would work with the heir or heirs to make sure those payments happen.

I've been buying the *@* outta these 100x tickets I need a win....the im only asking for 40-50k... *@* 10k will work! Wats crazy is I play a lot but I've never won over 300$and I don't buy it unless it's 10$ or more everyone I know has had to go to lotto headquarters not me I by like crazy and dont get *@*???? It's up to Walmart to decide which stores sell lottery tickets. Vending machines will be able to accept debit cards beginning April 15. [/reply

With the annuity form of payment, would the heirs be eligible to receive it, or does it end upon the winner's death. Just wondering how that works.... NC Lottery
Good question. The lottery pays the full annuity, all 20 years, either to the winner or the winner's estate.
