Christopher Hancock of Wilmington stopped by the convenience store to get a package of sour gummy worms, but walked away with a Cash 5 ticket that won $185,743.
“I went to pay for my bag of sour gummy worms,” Hancock said. “I had $10 in my pocket, saw the jackpot amount, and thought, ‘Why not get some Cash 5 tickets?’”
The plumber bought five Quick Pick tickets for Wednesday’s drawing.
“I got to work early, so I sat in my truck and checked the tickets,” Hancock described. “I looked at my phone and then at my ticket and then at my phone about three more times. You know how your brain gets, so I just kept thinking I wasn’t looking at it right. But then I realized, ‘Oh my God. This is for real!’”
Hancock immediately called his wife, and then told his boss.
“He gave me a hug and lifted me off the ground,” Hancock said. “He told me to go, ‘Straight to Raleigh.’”
That’s what Hancock did. He claimed the jackpot a few hours later at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $130,951.
“We’re going to use some of the money to get a new family car,” Hancock said. “My wife currently has a 2002 Mazda that’s just falling apart.”
Hancock bought the winning Cash 5 ticket at the Speedway on Gordon Road in Wilmington.
Congratulations!
