‘Oh yeah!’ Granville County man says of winning $1 million lottery prize

Good luck can hit any time, and for Christopher Veasey of Creedmoor, it struck Saturday night when he stopped for gas and walked away with a lottery ticket worth $1 million.

“I went to pay,” Veasey said. “And just decided to get one.”

He scratched the $4,000,000 Diamond Dazzler ticket when he got home later that evening.

“When I saw the ‘41’ at the top I couldn’t believe it,” Veasey said. “I thought, ‘Oh yeah! I’ve got a $1 million winner.’”

Veasey said he celebrated by drinking a Mountain Dew. He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had the choice of taking an annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $423,012.  He plans to invest the money.

Veasey bought the $20 ticket at the Smart Stop Mini Mart on Central Avenue in Butner.

$4,000,000 Diamond Dazzler launched in September 2017 with three top prizes of $4 million and six $1 million prizes. One $4 million prize and three $1 million prizes remain.

Ticket sales from instant games like $4,000,000 Diamond Dazzler make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million a year for the state.

Congratulations!

@ Betty R, Betty, some folks (not myself) like to scratch the numbers and prizes off in the play area first, then they scratch off the winning numbers one at a time. He noticed 41 was over the 1 million symbol and realize what he had done after scratching off the 41 in the winning numbers. Does that make sense?

Just curious, if he won $1 million dollars why is the winner being penalized for choosing the lump sum? It shouldn't be reduced to $600,000. Why not just take the taxes owed out. Not everyone will live the 20 years it will take to receive all of the annuity payments. Also, does the tax percentages change from year to year or is it setup where it cannot change if taking the 20 year annuity payments? NC Lottery
It's the winner's choice, just like with Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots. $1 million scratch-off prizes used to only be paid as an annuity. But players asked for the choice so the lottery decided to allow that. The rate of tax withholding can change over time. Last year, the federal rate was 25 percent, but under the changes in the federal tax law it dropped to 24 percent this year.

Can someone please explain what he means by this statement... “When I saw the ‘41’ at the top I couldn’t believe it,” Veasey said. “I thought, ‘Oh yeah! I’ve got a $1 million winner.’” I'm lost do certain numbers only appear for big ticket wins? NC Lottery
Sure. It was just the match he made. He had scratched off one of his numbers and saw the $1 million prize and then he looked up and saw it matched one of the winning numbers on his ticket. Must be nice to see that happen.

It’s good to see that there REALLY is a winning ticket in circulation. I’ve said it before, but I have no doubt that the odds of even breaking even are falsely advertised and there’s no way prove it. When one consistently buys tickets without even a break even win isn’t just bad luck. It’s rigged!

Congratulations! Just wondering what is the taxes on the 50,000 a year annuity? NC Lottery
Good question. Withholding is the same with annuity or lump sum. That would be 24 percent withholding for federal taxes or 5.499 percent withholding for state. Difference is that your withholding for lump sum of $600,000 is done when you get the lump sum check while the withholding for the $50,000 annual payment would be done every year you get the annuity check as it adds up to $1 million. Which would you prefer?

Grats, that is one of the lotterys best cards ever.

Congradgulation! what is the taxes on $600,000? NC Lottery
The tax withholding is 24 percent for federal income taxes and 5.499 for state income taxes.
