Watch out for new email scam

The email shows up in your inbox saying, “Attention: Email Account Holder. Congratulations!! Congratulations!!” N.C. Education Lottery and LinkedIn logos sit in the header.

The email purports to be your notification that you won $900,000 as a result of the North Carolina Lottery and LinkedIn associates Online Lotto. Sounds too good to be true? It absolutely is.

The N.C. Education Lottery has no such promotion going on with LinkedIn and does not randomly take email addresses and enter them into drawings. So if you get this email, please delete it and please don’t share any personal information with the sender.

Some of you who have gotten the email recognized the scam for what it is. Perhaps the tip-off was the out-of-date logo, or the wrong address for lottery headquarters, or the North Carolina lottery agents who happen to work in Illinois. All are things that help you see that the email is a scam.

Scams can be avoided if you follow our tips that will help determine if an email is from us, the North Carolina Education Lottery:
•    You will not get an email notifying you won a prize, unless you are part of our players club or have an Online Play account.
•    The lottery will never ask for personal information through email. We respect our players. If you do receive a prize notification email from our Lucke-Rewards or Online Play program, it will ask you to verify contact information that is already on file.
•    You can only buy draw tickets online or take part in our online drawings if you are a member of our players club. If you aren’t a member and get an email saying you won, there’s a good chance it’s not authentic. If you are a member, you can check the list of current drawings listed on Current Promotions and Drawings page at: https://www.nclottery.com/Promotions.
•    Lucke-Rewards members can opt in to get other emails, such as emails on new games or promotions or our winning numbers emails.

Why can’t you have a reliable app for the NC education lottery. I am so sick of the “ can’t validate Geo location” error when I am clearly in Charlotte NC. Yes, I have tried turning my phone on and off and ensuring that the app can track my location. The people that answer the phones Simply run you around in circles. It seems as if You organization is provided with all the $$ the need, but they are not providing the services they are paid to do. Not cool! There isn’t even a way for someone to send an email about a problem. NC Lottery
We're sorry that you are having trouble and that Customer Service could not solve your issue. The lottery must make sure folks are in NC before selling tickets. You can email. Hi I'm posting so hope NC Lotto office Will see my post I've read numerous posts weeks ago about App not working Saw a person's post here I have same issue with my Note 8 Android with service from Verizon App won't load says error & goes off This is what's going on My phone did a system update over month ago which caused my Lotto App to no longer work I've deleted & redownloaded NC Lotto App numerous times No luck After over a week of manually entering at online site I decided to try Lotto App had installed on my tablet which hasn't had any system update it works fine Scans & tells winning tickets and scans tickets for points plus enter drawings So I'm no computer wiz but NC Lotto needs to issue an update on their app for us customers with recent Android changes Cause it is tough manually entering info plus can't enter drawings So I'm fortunate have a tablet can use App on Hope this will help get attention to this matter and soon our phones back to working Look forward to reaction from NC Lotto Thanks

I really do believe NCEL is a scam, fraud, misleading, or limit cash payouts. I have proof. I played pick 3 today same numbers the same way for years. I change my slip every so often. But today, using the same slip from previous days, I played 807 one of my faithful numbers. It came out I was happy yaaa me. Looked at my ticket the number was changed from 807 to 907. Very odd. So I checked my other numbers they were correct. I checked my slip to make sure I selected the right numbers and it was mark free. I So I checked my previous non winning tickets and they were all correct. So why did the computer change my 807 to 907. The only thing I can say is to limit cash payouts. Anyone else has had this issue? If yes please step up. The only thing I learned is to check your tickets and I do believe something is going on that NCEL is not telling us. Did the system know the winning number before hand and changed the number to limit cash payouts? The world will never know but NCEL does!

I would like to know if the lottery APP is ever going to be fixed? I am unable to use it and haven't been for quite some time now. Its frustrating. Its much easier to scan my tickets than to manually enter each and every one. Please fix the APP!!NC Lottery

Great question, Debbie. For our Second Chance and Lucke-Rewards drawings, winners will be notified within 48 hours via email. However, if the email notification goes unanswered, we will follow up with a phone call and then certified mail if necessary.

NC Lottery, here's what bothers me about NC Lottery notifications. I've ask what the address is that will appear in my in box if I win one of the second prize drawing for this very same reason you indicated in your notice about a SCAM ALERT. NC Lottery has refused to supply the exact title of the second chance drawing so we can identify it from a scam email. And yes, we are registered on line to enter second chance drawings. In order to identify the winning notice we need to know the NC Lottery title. Otherwise it may come into my in box. NC Lottery
Hi Helen, Thanks for the input. The promotion noted in the scam email is not a second chance drawing, so there is no title for the drawing. The correct lottery address is 2728 Capital Boulevard, Raleigh, NC 27604. If there is a different address noted, there is a good chance it is a scam. Our recommendation is to just keep an eye out for emails from the lottery and take extra care to ensure that it was a legitimate email by following the tips noted above.
