Anthony Chavis of Greenville said he spent the weekend sleeping on a scratch-off ticket worth $1 million.
“Once I saw that I won I put it under my mattress,” Chavis said. “I figured if anyone was going to take the ticket, they’d have to go through me.”
The landscaper’s good fortune happened Friday when he stopped at the Circle K on Arlington Boulevard in Greenville and bought a 100X The Cash scratch-off ticket.
“I saw the ‘1’ and thought, ‘Great I won a $100,’” Chavis described. “Then I saw the zeros. I was like, ‘Is this right? Let me go get my glasses.’ I put my glasses on and still couldn’t believe it.”
Chavis claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had the choice of taking an annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $423,012.
“Wooh! It feels good,” Chavis said after receiving his check. He plans to use some of the money to buy a new home.
The $20 ticket launched in February with three top prizes of $4 million and six prizes of $1 million. Two top prizes and three $1 million prizes remain.
