A teacher’s influence is widespread, and for Tyra Kornegay of Clayton, it was a teacher who inspired her to dream of having her own classroom.
“I’d see her in the classroom and how she’d handle things,” Kornegay explained. “The way she’d build relationships with us was just phenomenal. It made me want to be a teacher.”
Kornegay recently graduated from N.C. State in elementary education. Her ultimate goal? Is to use the arts as a way to inspire children.
“I’m passionate about performing arts and about children,” Kornegay said. “I want to use theater and music to help them reach their dreams.
Money raised by the lottery helped make college more affordable for Kornegay.
“Because I got the lottery scholarship, I’m able to do my dream,” Kornegay said. “To have the kind of influence that matters, that’s my dream. That’s my purpose.”
Kornegay will begin teaching this fall.
“I can’t believe I’m going to have my own classroom,” Kornegay exclaimed. “Sooner rather than later!”
Kornegay is one of thousands of students who received financial aid from lottery funds this year.
