Video: $250,000 lottery prize makes marriage dream possible for Knightdale couple

Fredrick Richardson of Knightdale said he plans to use part of a $250,000 lottery prize to make his dream of getting married come true.

“My girlfriend and I have wanted to get married for a while,” Richardson said. “It just got pushed to the back burner since we didn’t have the funds. But now we finally can.”

The cook’s good fortune happened Saturday when he stopped at the Shop N Go on N.C. 39 in Zebulon and bought a Hit $500 scratch-off ticket.

“I saw that I had a match,” Richardson said. “I thought I’d probably won $5 or $50, but then I finished scratching. I started crying and thinking, ‘Is this for real?’ When I showed my girlfriend, she started crying and the first thing she said was, ‘We can finally get married.’”

He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $176,249. Richardson also plans to get a new Chevy Equinox.

The chances are slim to none but just for the sake of clarification, the Muliply the Cash has several tiers/prizes for that one game, is the game overall considered "one draw" or is each pick for each prize considered a draw? In other words, if you win $10K and by some wild chance your ticket is picked for $500 too can you win both. Would they be considered separate draws or anything under that one game is a draw? Hi Donna, Great question. Players can have unlimited entries for any Second Chance or Lucke-Rewards drawings, however, a player is only eligible to win once per drawing. If the situation arose in which a player's name was drawn for two tiers of prizes in a single drawing, the player would be selected to win the higher level prize and an alternate would be chosen for the second prize. Wow, lower entry amounts then I would have thought. I guess people were saving their points for other upcoming drawings. And not having a $10 Multiply the Cash ticket is prolly effecting that number. But I guess the $20 ticket is keeping it relatively high. How close was your estimate Mike S..

Since Mr. Richardson got 70.5% of the winnings after federal and state tax withholding, can we say that percent will always apply?NC Lottery
Hi Terry, The lottery withholds the minimum state tax of 5.499% and federal tax of 24%. If tax rates change, so will the final payout. Hope this helps!
