Nashville man stops for chicken nuggets and burgers, rides away with $200,000 lottery prize

For Edward Rackley of Nashville, a stop at a McDonalds drive-through to pick up dinner for his kids led to more than a fast food takeaway.

Rackley, who works in the fencing business, stopped by Dollar Country on West Nashville Drive in Nashville on Saturday and purchased the new $200,000 Back Scratch ticket. He then swung by the nearest McDonalds drive-through to get dinner for his kids.

“I had ordered 50 chicken nuggets and four plain hamburgers,” said Rackley. “I figured while I was waiting, I might as well start scratching.”

He looked over the lucky ticket the first time – $200,000. He looked at it a second time – still $200,000. Wanting to know if his eyes were deceiving him, he looked to get a second opinion.

“What does that say?” Rackley asked the McDonalds clerk.

“Two hundred thousand dollars,” the clerk replied.

“She confirmed it,” recalled Rackley. “I was in fact seeing it right.”

Rackley claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $141,003. He plans to use some of the money to fix up his car and support his children.

“I know one thing,” said Rackley. “Santa will be good to them this year.”

The $5 ticket launched earlier this month with four top prizes of $200,000. Tickets in the Back Scratch family range from $1 to $10 and offer top prizes from $10,000 to $1 million. If a player turns any of the tickets over, they’ll find up to five more chances to win.

LZ, you say the lists on our website can only go back so far. Why is that? I was looking to see if I could go back to find all the winners from Richmond County that had won on the Cash5. I remember the Thompson lady winning the biggest Cash5 here in my county. But I know there was others.. Oh, well, it is what it is! Thanks.. NC Lottery
Roger K. If you would like to send in a request and specify the area and time period you want, the lottery will run a report for you and send it to you. Send request, county and what years, to

I've notice just about all the stores I go into here in Richmond County, have signs posted on their door saying a 5,000 winning tickets sold here and also I see posted 10,000 dollar winning ticket sold here. But when I go to the winners list on NCEL and scroll through the names, I don't see any of their names of the store on the winners list. Could it be that the store owners put the posters up to draw in customers.NC Lottery
Hey Roger, Store owners do not put those signs up unless there has been a winning ticket sold there. It’s important to remember that the Lottery pays out about $4.5 million a day in prizes! That’s a lot of prizes being claimed each day, so the lists on our website can only go back so far. It’s up to the retailer on whether or not they put the signs up showing prizes won from tickets sold in their stores.

Congrats Edward Enjoy! Do something great for yourself. Maybe consider doing something nice for an animal shelter like dropping off a couple of big bags of food and some treats :-)

when playing the lottery, I have learned that any money spent should be money not needed. Do not expect to win since losing tickets pay winning prizes. Do you realize how many losing tickets there has to be to pay winning jackpots on the 30 dollar collosal ticket!?NC Lottery
Well said, Greg. Lottery games are meant to be a form of entertainment, where you have a chance to win some great prizes! We're wishing you luck!

PSA #69.since my previous post I’ve purchased 4 more Colossal Cash tickets, and I have a HUGE surprise! NOT ONE OF THOSE TICKETS WAS EVEN A BREAK EVEN WINNER! This is just funny now! NC Lottery=Dishonesty!NC Lottery
Hey there Zachary, We wish every ticket could be a winner, but it's important to remember that non-winning tickets is where prize money comes from! Since all winning and non-winning tickets are printed at the beginning of a game and distributed randomly throughout the entire game, each pack of tickets has a unique mix of winning and non-winning tickets. With games of chance there is never a guarantee of winning, only a chance to win.

Congratulations to the winner you are blessed. Another big winner in the Raleigh or western part of the state. No big money in the Ahoskie era. With people buying tickets like crazy the lottery is making a lot of money in the Ahoskie area. Please put some big money here .
