Powerball tickets win big in North Carolina

If you played Powerball yesterday, check your tickets! Saturday’s drawing produced a $2 million and a $50,000 win in North Carolina.

The $2 million ticket was sold at the Quik Trip on Concord Parkway South in Concord.

The winning numbers were 9-17-34-59-64 for the white balls and 22 for the red Powerball. The North Carolina win of $2 million was the largest prize won nationally in Saturday’s drawing.

The ticket matched all five white balls drawn to win $1 million. Because the ticket had the Power Play feature, the prize doubled to $2 million when the 2X Multiplier was drawn. The ticket beat odds of 1 in 11.7 million.

The $50,000 ticket was sold at the Circle K on West Wendover Avenue in Greensboro.

That ticket matched four of the white balls and the red Powerball drawn, beating odds of 1 in 913,129.

Winners have 180 days from the drawing to claim their prize.

The jackpot in Wednesday’s drawing has reached $229 million, worth $134.3 million cash.

Gm NCLottery, on the second chance games can you explain to me what TBD means in the place where it says enter date and drawing date? Thank you NikkiNC Lottery
Hi Nikki, We're happy to help. We list "TBD" as a placeholder for a second-chance drawing that is currently open for entries, but does not yet have an entry deadline or a draw date set yet. Generally, once those dates are finalized, we publish a blog post letting players know.

We're glad you're excited -- so are we! You can expect to see a blog post about the Cash 5 changes before the end of the week.

@MICHAEL B.: Hi Michael, According to lottery policy, a player should never be charged by the retailer to claim their prize, this includes fees for money orders. If you are ever seeing a retailer charging a fee for issue a money order as a lottery payment, please give the lottery a call at 1-877-962-7529 and let our team know.

Why should the player pay for a money order if the lottery retailer is unable to pay in cash or business check? And by the way if it is a business check and you are not a customer of that bank you will probably have to pay a fee if you try to cash it at the bank it's written on so you will need to deposit the check in your checking account to avoid any fees. Believe it or not some folks don't have a checking account! My point is if the retail vendor has made a contract with NC Education lottery to sale the tickets they should be required to pay out winnings under $599 at no additional cost to the customer, but if they must pay out the winnings via money order, the NC Lottery should require the vendor to post a notice stating there will be an additional fee for the money order. Another thought, some lottery winners live in rural areas where they would have to travel fifty miles or more if they had to hunt for vendors to collect their pay out. Ridiculous!

In reference to Sandra's comment, there is a store in my hometown who will not pay more than $100...however they will give you a money order for FREE..another store-(grocery) charges for the money order. Should they charge for the money order? Thanks NC Lottery
Hi Mary, A retailer should not charge for the money order if they are using it as a form of payment for a lottery prize. Can you let us know which retailers this has occurred at so that a member of our team can follow up with the store directly? Thank you!

For me collecting a reward payout these days from the Lottery vendors is becoming a bit of a discouragement since I have to plan ahead which gas station im going to use to cash my ticket today. I won $200 on the Big Ticket and this is not the first time its happened to me when cashing prizes under $599. The first stop said they can only pay out $100 prize, the second stop said they only had $40 in their til, and the last stop said they can cash it but they can only give me $100 cash and the other $100 as a money order. Oh and i would have to pay $1.50 for the money order. So where can i now cash this money order? NC Lottery
Hi Sandra, lottery retailers should all pay out wins up to $599 with either cash, business check or money order. Can you let us know which retailers are saying they won't pay out over $100?
