Lenoir County woman celebrates ‘Colossal’ $1 million win

Cherie Kittrell of La Grange is celebrating after she won a $1 million lottery prize.

Her good fortune happened when she stopped by the Save Mart of Lenoir on South Wooten Street in La Grange
and bought a $10,000,000 Colossal Cash scratch-off ticket.

Kittrell claimed her prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. She had the choice of taking an annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $424,509. 

The $30 ticket launched in August with four top prizes of $10 million and 16 prizes of $1 million. Three top prizes and 12 $1 million prizes remain. Players can also enter their tickets into four second-chance drawings for a $1 million prize.

Ticket sales from games like $10,000,000 Colossal Cash help the lottery raise more than $650 million a year for education. Congrats! I have a winning colossal now don't know the prize amount yet. When I win I don't always scratch the winning amount right away. I look at all the other amounts and from there I just about know what it is. Guess I want the possibility of the big win to last a little longer, torture I know..Lol

Regardless of where you live or play, the odds of winning a prize are exactly the same. Over time, the odds of winning -- and not winning -- play out the same way in Raleigh or Charlotte as they do in the mountains or on the coast. A big winning ticket can show up anywhere at anytime. In cities like Raleigh or Charlotte, you simply have a larger volume of both winning and non-winning tickets being sold, so again, over time there are more winners from those areas. Congrats to the winner.. But I have a question for the lottery commission. You mentioned that it's just luck on where the winning tickets are. However I can tell you, I have been following a longtime, and there are never big winners on the coast as much as the inner cities of this state. Not even on the lucke draws do you ever see a winner from Wilmington...never. And you can't say it's because of population because Raleigh and Charlotte don't add up to the rest of the states population. If you want to win buy a ticket away from the coast..try Raleigh or Charlotte areas.NC Lottery

The short answer: it's all a matter of luck! The long answer: for any one lottery game, all of the winning and non-winning tickets are printed before the game begins and are interspersed at random throughout the entire game (not just within packs of tickets). Due to this randomness, every roll of tickets has a unique mix of winning and non-winning tickets. Winning tickets at every level are then distributed at random to our nearly 7,000 retailers across the state. Every time you play the lottery, it takes luck to beat the odds. That's true whether you visit one store or 100. Good luck to you!
