No tricks, just treats for New Bern woman who won a $257,594 Cash 5 jackpot on Halloween

Forget the tricks, Linda McBride of New Bern said she got the treat of a lifetime after she won a $257,594 Cash 5 jackpot on Halloween.

McBride’s good luck started Thursday afternoon when her husband of 35 years stopped at the Handy Mart on South Glenburnie Road in New Bern and bought a Quick Pick Cash 5 ticket.

“We’ve been playing the lottery together for a long time,” McBride said. “It’s something we enjoy doing. Whenever he gets a ticket, he always makes sure to get one for me.”

She found out she won the next morning while she was tending to her horses.

“I thought my husband was kidding at first,” McBride said. “Then he told me to look at the ticket and the numbers on his phone. I couldn’t believe it.”

McBride claimed her prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $182,248. McBride said she doesn’t have any big plans for the money, but said she wants to make it a nice Christmas.   
 
Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website. The jackpot for tonight’s drawing is $120,000.

Whoever W.B. is in Fuquay Varina he is definitely lucky to have won twice in the Lucke-Rewards Game. Maybe he's carrying a lucky charm. I gotta get me one of those. LOL Good Luck Everybody!

Hi there Evette, In most cases our team notifies the winners within 48 hours of the draw day. So, all of the winners should have been notified by the end of the day on Friday. The website will be updated to include their names once they have responded and claimed their prize.

I also hate the 5 ticket Cash 5 min. and refuse to buy 5 tickets. I always play 2 or 3 tickets almost everyday ,but cant afford to buy 5 everyday. It use to be fun and convenient that I could purchase tickets online. Well thanks for spoiling that. I do enjoy some of the new features on the new app, but this min purchase is a real bummer. What happened to being able to buy 2 $1 tickets for Cash 5 online? Now the minimum is $6. Which genius made this decision? So disappointing.NC Lottery
We can certainly understand your disappointment, Jeffrey. As a part of our new Online Play system, we updated our policies to include a $5 minimum purchase amount to help counter transaction fees. We know folks enjoy playing the lottery, and many folks set a budget or prefer to buy only one draw at a time. That is why you can still go to any retailer and purchase your tickets with no minimum requirements.

When will "wicked winnings" winners be notified? It still says no winners even though the drawing date was Oct. 30th. Ever since the site updated I cant even see if my entries are still there! NC Lottery
Hey James! You can see your past entries in your Lucke-Rewards Draw History located in your dashboard. Typically, our team notifies the winners within 48 hours of the draw day. So, all of the winners should have been notified by the end of the day on Friday. The website should be updated soon.
