A Wilmington couple, Wilbur and Katie Griffin, are sharing a $25,000 a Year for Life prize they won in the Dec. 9 Lucky for Life drawing.
The Griffin’s ticket matched the five white balls to win the prize, beating odds of one in 1.8 million. They bought the lucky ticket using Online Play on the lottery’s website.

“Wow,” said Wilbur of their good luck after they claimed their prize. “It’s a little overwhelming right now,” added Katie, “but we’ve got plans to invest in our home and our children’s education.”

The game’s second prize, $25,000 a Year for Life, pays out every year for the rest of a winner’s life. A winner also can choose to claim the prize as a lump sum of $390,000. The Griffins chose to split the lump sum amount. After federal and state tax withholdings, each received $137,963.

Lucky for Life tickets are $2 and drawings are held on Monday and Thursday nights.

South Carolina DOES allow you to claim anonymously. They're like, part of us, right? Nor one solid state called Carolina but rather North and South. So.....SC allows anonymously. Just saying.....

PSA; Save your money in Wilmington! I play the Supreme Riches fairly regularly and hardly have gotten a break even ticket! These games are rigged!! The only people winning are the lottery executives, cause it’s certainly not common folk or the schools! Maybe the lottery executives will let us use their beach house....NC Lottery
Our players will be happy to know that there are many winners from the Wilmington area. You can view some of the recent winners in these search results: http://bit.ly/2QkOGi4 Also, 100% of lottery proceeds go toward education in our state. Last year that was over $700 million dollars. You can see how that money was used right here: https://nclottery.com/Education

Can we make claiming our prizes anonymousNC Lottery
Hi Joshua, most state lotteries do not allow winners to claim anonymously. Knowing that real people win lottery prizes is important to public confidence that the lottery is fair to everyone who plays. Also, the lottery does not have the power to make or change the law, we simply operate according to the state law that created the lottery.

@nc lottery. If a winner chooses the annual payments, are the payments made each year on the date the winning ticket was purchased? ThxNC Lottery
Hi Sheila, for the $25,000 a Year for Life prize the initial payment will be made the day the winner claims, after the initial payment, subsequent payments will be annual, but may not be on the same day as the day the winner claimed.

What would be the annual tax withholding on the $25K/year payout?NC Lottery
Hi Michael, we would be required to withhold 5.499% state tax and 24% federal tax. After a tax withholding of $7374.75, a winner would receive $17,625.25 per year.

How would that payout be if you take annually.$$$ how much divided between two people.NC Lottery
Under the game rules, the "For Life" annuity prizes in our Lucky for Life game cannot be shared. If a winner or winners want to share the prize, they must choose the lump sum as these winners did.
