Union County man drives around with $25,000 A Year For Life prize and doesn’t know it

Bennie Faulkner of Marshville said he drove around with a $25,000 A Year For Life Prize for 72 hours and didn’t even know it.

“I always put my tickets in the glove compartment of my car,” Faulkner said. “I didn’t think I’d actually win, so I just forgot about it.”

The retired steel worker’s good fortune happened when he stopped to get some cold water at the Wingate Food Mart on U.S. 74 East in Wingate. While there, he bought a Lucky For Life ticket for the drawing on Nov. 18.

He didn’t realize that he won until his niece called him.

“She told me someone from Wingate won,” Faulkner said. “I went back to the store and scanned the ticket, when it said I needed to go to lottery headquarters I couldn’t believe it. It still hasn’t set in.”

Faulkner claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. Winners are guaranteed $25,000 a year for life and have the option of taking a lump sum. Faulkner chose the lump sum. After federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $275,926. He said he plans to use the money to fix up his house.

Faulkner’s ticket matched the five white balls to win the prize. It beat odds of one in 1.8 million. Lucky for Life has 10 ways to win a prize. Faulkner won the second-place prize of $25,000 A Year For Life. The top prize is $1,000 A Day For Life.

Ticket sales from games like Lucky for Life made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $700 million a year for education. To learn how lottery funds made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties last year, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

@nc lottery. Thanks for your explanation. But what if a winner decide to not take the annuity via the $1000k a day for life but choose the $1000k a day for life, how does that work? ThxNC Lottery
Hi Sheila, When someone wins the top prize in Lucky For Life, they have the choice of receiving their prize as a lifetime annuity paid annually, or as a lump sum. Hope this helps answer your question!

Does that work on Powerball and Mega Millions? Say I elected to take the 30 year payment option and I passed away from sheer happiness 5 years later. Would my beneficiary or estate receive the same annual payment for the next 25 years? If not I can see why people take that outrageous lump sum amount at one time. Thanks for your reply.NC Lottery
Great question, Jim. All of our lottery prizes that are paid in annuities work like we described. If you were to pass away before you received the full annuity, your designated estate would receive the remaining payments.

@tim m. Do you know how the $1000.00 a day for life works? Do you get a lump sum payment deposited into your account every FridayNC Lottery
We can help answer this one! If a player wins the top prize in Lucky For Life and opts for the annuity, they will receive one payment each year worth $365,000.

@NC LOTTERY, calculated as a 20-year payment? What if an 18-year old won one of the 'for life' prizes and then lived a long full life until possibly 80 or 90 years old? Would they still receive it or would they be cut off at 38 years old?NC Lottery
Great question, Tim. Lucky for Life is a unique game in that if the top prize winner opts for the "lifetime" prize, they will receive it for as long as they live--even if they live well past 100. However, if the winner passes away before the 20-year mark, their estate will receive "lifetime" payments until 20 years have been reached.

If he was in his 20's, then yes take the $25k a year for life. After Fed and State taxes might get $18k-20k net - over 40 years that is a nice sum. But a lump sum could mean paying off bills or putting a nice downpayment on on house. Everyone has their own though process.

@nc lottery I think what @mary m. is asking, the amount he received doesn't add up to a "for life payment". What is the true a person would receive if they chose $25k for life. How is it calculated? Does a person's age and life expectancy play a role in this? NC Lottery
Hi Sheila, winners of the second level “for life” prizes are guaranteed $25,000 a year for life. This is calculated as a 20-year payment. The winner also has the option of taking a lump sum of $390,000. Here's more information: https://nclottery.com/LuckyForLifeHow

Congratulations, but I would like to know why he didn't want to receive the $25,000 a year for life. What he got was only enough for 11 years, verses what he would have got for life; do he not think he will live longer than those 11 years? NC Lottery
Hey Mary, while winners of the second level “for life” prizes are guaranteed $25,000 a year for life, the winner also has the option of taking a lump sum which is what Mr.Faulkner chose.
