Monroe couple wins $313,717 Cash 5 jackpot

Vernon and Chanthy Thav of Monroe say winning a $313,717 Cash 5 jackpot means their dream of a trip to Cambodia to see family again can come true.

Vernon Thav said a main goal of the trip will be to visit his 82-year-old mother.

“We haven’t been able to see her in a long time,” he said. “We have two young children and we didn’t know how we could afford it. But now we can all go`. It’s a dream come true. I must have an angel watching over me.”

The couple won Tuesday’s Cash 5 jackpot with a Quick Pick ticket purchased at the Circle K on U.S. 74 in Monroe. The ticket beat odds of 1 in 962,598.

Vernon Thav said he discovered the win when he stopped by the store Wednesday morning to buy water.

“When the clerk said someone from Monroe won, I checked the ticket,” Vernon said. “When I saw the matching numbers, I raced out of the store to tell my wife.”

“I thought he was joking,” Chanthy added. “That’s a lot of money.”

The couple drove to lottery headquarters in Raleigh to claim their prize Wednesday afternoon. After state and federal tax withholdings, they took home $221,955.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and can be purchased at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website. Jackpots start at $100,000. The Thursday jackpot is $110,000.

Joanie, that's funny but sad. There are a lot of fake news videos on You Tube and the internet with people claiming to have the winning ticket. As of today no one has turned in the winning ticket and claimed the jackpot. If your husband lost the winning ticket he has NO one to blame but himself!!! This is 2019 not 1919. You need to smack him on the back of the head and say what the #@$#@ Bevis !!

Find out what time the tickets was sold and if your husband was there at that time. If it was sold about the time he bought his he might want to get a good divorce lawyer LOL!

Congratulations Thav family also no one has turned in mega millions October 23 2018 sold in SC for 1.6 billion crazy my husband bought a ticket at that store while working on a diesel truck in simpsonville they got washed with his gases clothes but I can not believe it would have been the winning ticket he is mad at me for washing clothes without checking his pockets untill the winner shows up I will not hear the end of this ??

@ NC S. I agree with everything you said. I’ve known this for years with my own research. It’s called Google lol. The stories your read are mind boggling. I USE to spend $10 week and have not won in 2 yrs but only $100twice couple dollars here there. Now I rather play. I will be nice now cause I’ve gotten reported to the lotto law lol b4 w my facts.. oh and gamblers hotline lol give me a break . All the ppl spending $1000s day and me spend TEN dol day. Circle K: From what I was told, you need to have a valid state ID. They will not accept passports, only State Issued ID's! The clerk also informed me it came from Headquarters not the lottery commission.NC Lottery
Thank you for sharing more information on this, Comfort! The lottery does not dictate what forms of ID are acceptable when it comes to verifying the age of a player. So, we leave it up to the retailer to decide what IDs they will accept.

In the name of bigger jackpots the players have got messed over in all the draw games. Cash five used to be my favorite game to play. They kept adding numbers until now it’s one in a million to win it! Powerball,Mega Millions, now are a lost cause even if you get 3 numbers you don’t win enough to go to McDonalds. It’s a shame what it has came to. The lottery makes more and more and the players chances get worse and worse!

FYI: are you aware as of February First Circle K gas stations are not selling lottery tickets to anyone without a valid state ID? No draw tickets nor scratch off tickets with out a valid ID. Is that a directive from the lottery commission? NC Lottery
Hi there Comfort, We'd like to know a little more about this. Are the retailers you are visiting only allowing ticket sales to people with North Carolina IDs? Lottery retailers should be checking IDs in an effort to prevent ticket sales to minors, but lottery tickets are available for purchase for anyone over the age of 18--no matter what state they call home.

Since you so adamant at saying the draws are truly random how have employees of the Lottery been convicted which means proven guilty of rigging the game? Do I need to go start my truck 4 times to make sure it'll start tomorrow or can it still not start? Seems like I'm adding to the wear and tear if I'm worried about reliability.

@ Gary what are the balls being tested for if they're plastic and in a sealed container supposedly be sucked up by air and continuously watched by surveillance? Maybe you should help get the Lottery employee who was sentenced to 25 plus years for manipulating the systems sentence reduced since you're sure it's random/fair and can't be rigged-don't be so gullible.

Does the independent auditor get replaced every so often? As stated the Lottery has had many causes of fraud from within so the game can/has been manipulated because it's computer programmed,which has been proven. Why are there six sets of so called plastic balls and numerous pre-draws done before the actual drawing and then called a random drawing-WHAT? NC Lottery
The auditor for each drawing is from an independent firm with no lottery affiliations. You have asked and we have answered this question multiple times before, but to reiterate, we conduct pre-draws to ensure that the machine is functioning properly and there are no other concerns with it or the ball set that have been chosen at random for the drawing. We have multiple sets of balls so that every drawing has a randomly selected ball set. The balls used in our drawings are inspected prior to every use by third party auditors. Additionally, all the balls are weighed and measured to ensure they comply with industry standards.

The Lottery is not random and is controlled. Look up all the stories of Lottery employees charged for rigging the system-how if it's not possible and random? It is a computer controlled gamed which means they are programed-can be manipulated. The same reason why the Lottery needs an hour after all tickets are sold so the program can run through which combinations haven't been played. The same reason they have 6 sets of so called plastic balls they rotate. You still have a slim chance to win if they want your area to win- dictated by quick picks. A truly random game cannot be rigged/controlled by a computer-The Lottery's games are. This is a multi billion dollar industry which knows when and were their chosen winners are happening. @Glenn, you do realize that the PB,MM and LFL drawings are held in other states then NC ! So what you are suggesting is impossible to rig. So are all the other drawings. You have the same chance of winning or not winning as myself or anyone else no matter where we live. I know if I had any doubt if the lottery was legit I would just quit. If anyone out there thinks the lottery is rigged, take that money, buy yourself burger and beer, girl scout cookies or a rescue puppy and quit complaining.
