Bladen County man scratches his way to a $200,000 surprise

Harold McDowell of Elizabethtown plays scratch-off games for the anticipation of a big win but didn’t anticipate the $200,000 surprise he was in for.

McDowell purchased the Win It All instant ticket from Community Mart on East Broad Street in his hometown.

“I buy them all the time but I don’t scratch them expecting to win,” said McDowell. “I like the element of surprise.”

This time, the surprise turned out to be a good one. He scratched the ticket halfway off, saw the first three zeroes, and then stopped to get a glass of water before finishing the rest.

McDowell claimed his prize Friday afternoon at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $141,501.

“I want to pay off all of my bills and have a little extra to fall back on,” said McDowell. “It feels good to not have that burden.”

The Win It All game started in December with six top prizes of $200,000. As of Monday, three $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Hey Michael, There are currently 15,107,180 entries for the Multiply the Cash second-chance drawing that is scheduled for April 3rd.

Just wondering, what determines how long a scratch off is in circulation? The $5 game "Queen of Hearts" ended even though it has 3 top prizes of $200,000 left. Where as "Lots of $10,000" has a very few prizes left, cannot be found in Raleigh area but still active! NC Lottery
Hey there Srinivasa! There are several things that factor into the decision to end a scratch-off game. Most often a game will be ended if all the top prizes are won. But, if a game is no longer popular with our players or if we have a similar game scheduled to come out soon, we might also choose to end that game.

Hi there Charlene, We leave it up to each individual retailer to choose which scratch-off games they want to carry, but you should be able to find this game at a few stores near you.

Can't win for nothing! I have never been as frustrated with the lottery as I have been this past week. Someone told me today that they purchased a stack of $10 50X tickets at a cost of $300 and only won $65 total. That was 30 tickets. What happened to the odds!!! NC Lottery
