Over the past six weeks, North Carolinians from all across the state have nominated 6,750 teachers, educators, and school workers as “School Heroes” and cast more than two million votes for their favorites.
All of the nominations, part of the Education Lottery’s School Heroes program, create a collection of amazing stories of good deeds that are occurring every day in our state’s public schools. At ncschoolheroes.com, you can read stories about teachers and school workers who:
- Inspire their students to overcome challenges
- Look out for students' safety
- Instill a love of learning within their students
Nominations came from all 100 North Carolina counties. Twenty counties had 100 nominations or more.
Now that voting has ended, the nominations of the top 200 vote-getters will be reviewed by a panel of judges. Ten School Heroes will be selected to receive a $10,000 award for themselves and $10,000 for their schools. Winners will be announced on or about May 6.
The Education Lottery created the program to recognize School Heroes for the commitment they show to their students and schools. We invite you to go to ncschoolheroes.com and read the stories of those nominated from your counties. You can also learn more about how the money raised by the lottery benefits each county of the state.
The money assists the work of many of our School Heroes, including $384 million this year that supports the work of school support staff such as office assistants and custodians. The funds also helps build and repair schools, supports the N.C. Pre-K program for at-risk four-year-olds, provides college scholarships and grants based on financial need, and supports school transportation.
