Grocery store trip bags $1 million Powerball win for Sanford man

James Montgomery of Sanford won a $1 million Powerball prize on a routine visit to the grocery store.

“If I have a spare dollar or two when I’m shopping, I’ll buy a lottery ticket,” said Montgomery. “I’d joke that I was putting it into my retirement fund.”

Montgomery, an Army veteran with 22 years of service, purchased a $2 Quick Pick Powerball ticket at the Food Lion on Buffalo Lake Road in Harnett County.

“I barely slept an hour last night,” said Montgomery. “I dreamed for many years for something like this. I just thought if it’s meant to be, it’ll happen.”

Montgomery checked his numbers on his phone while pumping gas, then got back into the car with his wife and drove home – without saying anything about his big win.

“I didn’t say anything at first, just put my phone back in my pocket,” said Montgomery. After getting home and unpacking the groceries, Montgomery asked his wife to go on a walk so they could talk about something important.

“The last time he said something like that, he was being deployed,” said his wife.

Montgomery and his wife claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $707,501. They plan to use the money to pay off bills and save for retirement, with a little travelling here and there.

“We don’t intend to change who we are,” said Montgomery. “This money will make life a little easier so we can focus on what’s important, but we’ll still be living the same life.”

The ticket matched the numbers on the five white balls to win $1 million, beating odds of one in 11.7 million. The $1 million prize was one of two won in Saturday’s drawing nationally and a ticket sold in the U.S. Virgin Islands won $2 million. No one won Saturday’s jackpot. The jackpot will climb to $181 million as an annuity or $112.1 million cash for Wednesday’s drawing.

Draw games like Powerball make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for education. For details on how $8.3 million in lottery funds made a difference in Harnett County this last year, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

JB, it was not already taxed once. He won one million dollars and the IRS took taxes! No difference then if he was a CEO of Duke Power and made that a year. He may fall into a higher tax bracket when he files next year and pay maybe 5% more. Heck depending on his deductions and things he may even get money back when he files. Lottery winnings are the same as income and you will have to pay Uncle Sam, like it or not!!!!

That's what we would do. We don't need a fancy car or a luxury house, we just want to be comfortable in our retirement years. And we'd like to help a few charities. Congratulations to the Montgomery's!

292,000 for taxes! What a shame to pay that much on money that was already taxed once. And that's only the minimum. I'd take it for sure but still a shame. Always have their hands out for more.

Hey Jonathan H., I'm the winner's son. The story leaves out a little bit of info while also being a bit... Erroneous. I won't correct everything but I will say that he discovered a day or two after the drawing occurred that he had won, not directly after getting his ticket. The grocery store trip when he bought his ticket was a different occasion from the trip mentioned that included the gas station stop (that grocery trip wasn't to the Food Lion he bought his ticket from). Hope that helps with the confusion! NC Lottery
Hi there Matthew, Thanks for helping clarify the timeline. If your father feels like we misinterpreted the timeline when he shared his story with us, we are happy to make corrections. Please just have him give us a call.

By the way there is no $1 quick pick for the Powerball. It's $2 dollars NC Lottery
Good catch, Kelly! We've updated that. :)

How did this guy check his number after getting groceries and on the way home ? Doesnt draw until 11pm.. Says he went home put up groceries then told his wife.. Seems like a tall tale but whatever he did, he did it right. Moore county is next big winner comingNC Lottery
Hi Jonathon, Sorry for the confusion! The trip where James bought the lottery ticket and the gas trip were not the same day.
