Fast car fan wins big with Carolina Black scratch-off

A lucky $5 Carolina Black ticket pushed drag racing enthusiast Eddie Brown over the finish line Friday with a $250,000 win. Brown, from Rowan County, plans to use his prize to pursue his hobby of building and racing fast cars.

“I love drag racing,” said Brown. “It’s a hobby I share with my girlfriend. I’m currently building a 1976 Ford Mustang Cobra II for her to race. We named it JULvenile. It’s a lot of fun, just something we like to do together.”

For Brown, owner of the custom building company Finish Touch, the luck began Friday morning when he bought a ticket at the Circle K on East Main Street in Rockwell on his way to work.

“I bought one ticket,” said Brown. “I didn’t see any prizes. I bought another one for later, but figured I’d scan it quick to see if there were any winners.”

The ticket scanner at the store not only said the ticket was a winner, but that Brown needed to go to lottery headquarters to claim his prize. Brown was so excited he immediately drove back home and woke up his girlfriend, Julie.

“You need to scratch this for me,” he said to Julie, “I think I won something big!’”

Julie, co-owner of Donny’s Western Store, scratched the ticket to reveal the top prize of $250,000. The two raced to Raleigh together to claim his prize.

“This feels amazing,” said Brown. “It feels like a double win because I got to share the moment with Julie.”

In honor of the lucky ticket, Brown said he plans to finish JULvenile in a matte black paint.

“Chrome used to be my favorite color,” said Brown. “But I think now my favorite color has to be Carolina Black!”

After required state and federal tax withholdings, Brown took home $176,876. In addition to pursuing his hobby, Brown plans to invest some of the winnings and build a shop.

Ticket sales from games like Carolina Black make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for education. For details on how $7.9 million in lottery funds made a difference in Rowan County last year, visit the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

"not sure who/what you're referring to by "LZ"": I'm not sure either; I think that was some kind of a brain cramp. NC Lottery
Hey Kyle, No worries. Every so often our longtime players refer to us as LZ here on the blog since our Players Club was originally called Lucke-Zone back in the day. :)

NCEL - I keep telling people all of that but for reasons I'll likely never understand some people just seem to prefer believing that they don't win because someone else - or the lottery itself - is cheating. I never have - and likely never will - understand that kind of thinking. Once again thank you for the feedback NCEL (or is it LZ? I guess it works either way) NC Lottery
Hey there Kyle, not sure who/what you're referring to by "LZ" but yes, it's the NCEL staff responding to comments on this blog page. Thanks for your support.

NC LOTTERY - Exactly; it would make no sense at all for y'all to rig games, pre-pick winners, or any of the many other illegal and/or unethical things NCEL is constantly being accused of doing. There's nothing to be gained by NCEL but a whole LOT to be lost by any kind of cheating. Thank you for the information NCEL. NC Lottery
Hi Kyle. Ticket distribution is a controlled and secure process and the tickets are sent out at random. The lottery does not know where the winning tickets are until they are claimed. It's just a matter of having a little good luck!

Congratulations

Avery - If the lottery were rigged - none of the games are rigged but if they were - why on Earth would any lottery people tell you that they are? "Rigging" or "fixing" any of the games is illegal so I sincerely doubt anyone would confess to anything like that, especially on a public message board.NC Lottery

I'm asking NCEL is this lottery games rigged do y'all send y'all people out to buy tickets that end up being winning tickets i just wanna know is the game rigged open for comments from anyone especially the LOTTERY peopleNC Lottery
Hey there Avery, Ticket distribution is a controlled and secure process and the tickets are sent out at random. Very strict security procedures are in place to make sure that the first person who finds out where a winning ticket shows up is the lucky person who buys it and scratches it. We don't know where a winning ticket was sold until that winner comes in to claim. Transparency and trust that the lottery is being run fairly is of utmost importance to us, which is why we make the effort of sharing each winner's story with you all.

well let me add my two cents, bought a supreme riches and it was the first ticket 000 and it was 400 bucks people leave comments but not a lot of information i had luck on tickets 000-010 but that’s me can’t say that about all tickets it is really the luck of draw and you trying to find that need in a haystack

5/21/2019 12:21 - Zachary H.

If you need to lose just about every time you play the lottery, play Supreme Riches! Ain’t nobody in the general public getting rich from this game! Only the people that the NCEL sends out to buy the winning tickets! Heck, I can’t even win my money back on this game. 12 tickets in a row without a break even prize! NCEL does not tell the truth as far as the odds on the back of the ticket! NC Lottery
Good afternoon, Zachary. Sorry to hear you aren't having more luck. The odds in Supreme Riches apply to the whole game, not 12 tickets in a row. Remember when you play the lottery, it takes luck to beat the odds. Sometimes it just takes one ticket to win. Our lottery games are audited before and after a game to ensure the odds are correct.
