Shonny Williams of Wake County gives her students the confidence to explore their possibilities.

A social worker with The Governor Morehead School in Raleigh, Williams takes on leadership roles on school committees and serves as an advocate for all students.

Whether she’s helping students feel like their best for prom night or encouraging them to be active members in the community, Williams’ is a constant source of support for every one of her students.

“Many social workers go unnoticed, because people feel it’s their job to offer care and support,” wrote Laura Wooten, student life director at the school. “GMS students benefit daily from her tireless advocacy and genuine support that exceeds any and all expectations for her profession.”

Williams’ commitment to nurturing her students and building them into confident adults is what led to her selection as one of the 10 winners of the Education Lottery’s School Heroes program.

“I love what I do,” said Williams. “I do it out of the love I have for my students. I don’t look for accolades. This is what I am called to do and where I am supposed to be.”

The North Carolina Education Lottery created the N.C. School Heroes campaign to showcase the positive impacts teachers, principals, and other school workers have in public schools every day. From 6,750 nominations, ten heroes were chosen with each receiving a $10,000 award and $10,000 for their school.

Students and staff gathered in front of Linebery Hall on the school’s campus to celebrate their school hero.

“We love you Ms. Shonny,” they shouted as Williams received her award. They clapped and cheered as she held her check above her head.

“There are thousands of heroes like Shonny Williams doing amazing work in our public schools,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “Teachers, cafeteria workers, custodians, school resource officers, all make a big difference for our students every day. We’re glad our School Heroes program shines a spotlight on their great work.”

The lottery raises more than $650 million a year for education. For details on how $65 million in lottery funds made a difference in Wake County, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com.
