Supreme Riches delivers first $1 million prize

Annette Grier of Charlotte is the first North Carolinian to win a $1 million prize in the new $300,000,000 Supreme Riches game.

Grier claimed her prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. She purchased the lucky $30 ticket at Grab N Go on York Road in Charlotte.

Grier had a choice of taking the $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum and after tax withholdings took home $424,509.

The $300,000,000 Supreme Riches game started in April with a top prize of $10 million. It offers six $1 million prizes that can be won instantly and four that can be won in second-chance drawings. The first second-chance drawing is scheduled for Aug. 7. Players have until July 31 to enter their Supreme Riches tickets into the drawing.

All four top prizes of $10 million remain to be claimed and five of the $1 million prizes are still unclaimed.

Hey Randall, Thanks for the opportunity to share more info on this! The difference between the annuity and the lump sum is not a penalty--winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. The 40% difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years. When the lottery began, only annuities were offered for prizes like this. Players asked to have the choice to take a lump sum, so we began offering it. It is always up to the player to choose which one to go with. Lottery winnings are considered income and we only withhold the minimum amount of taxes when a winner comes in to claim. Once tax time comes they could owe more or less depending on their individual financial situation. Hope this helps clear things up!

Hi Charise, To enter the second-chance drawing for the Supreme Riches ticket, all you need to do is log into your account and visit the "Collect" page to enter your ticket for points. When you enter your ticket there, you will be automatically entered into the second-chance drawing for this ticket. You should receive a confirmation when it goes through.

Nothing fishy here! The winner was given the choice between a $1 million annuity paid out over 20 years or a $600,000 lump sum. She chose the lump sum. We shared more info on this in a comment above if you would like to learn more about this.
