In Pennsylvania, the state lottery raises money for senior citizen programs. In Colorado, the state lottery raises money for outdoor programs. Here in North Carolina, your state lottery is proud to raise money for its good cause, public education.
The money raised by the lottery plays a small but important role in the state funding of education. The state budget allocated $767 million raised by the Education Lottery to support five important education programs that help all of North Carolina’s 100 counties.
They included:
- $386 million to help support the needs of local school systems to provide school staff – office assistants, custodians and substitute teachers, who help our schools run smoothly.
- $240 million to North Carolina counties to help build and repair schools.
- $78.2 million paid for thousands of four-year-olds to attend an academic Pre-K program to get ready for kindergarten this year.
- $41 million provided scholarships or grants, based on financial need, to make our state university and community colleges more affordable to our students.
- $21 million went to local school systems to help transport students to school safely.
The lottery’s website helps North Carolinians see how the money raised by the lottery benefits the state. You can click on the “Impact” section of the website, https://www.nclottery.com/Impact, to get that information and also to see a report for each county.
