Nash County woman wins Red Hot lottery prize

What would you do if you won $10,000 on a scratch-off ticket? When it happened to Gwendolyn Gorham of Rocky Mount, she was so excited she “fell down on her knees and started crying.”

She won the prize on a Red Hot Million$ scratch-off ticket. She bought the ticket at the Speedway on East Raleigh Boulevard in Rocky Mount. She claimed her prize Monday at the lottery claim center in Greenville.

Gwendolyn says she has some big plans for the money. She’s going to get a new roof and go on vacation.

@ Tim on buying tickets on a credit card. The retailer gets 7% of each dollar sold. A lot of credit card companies charge the merchant 3% or more. Might not sound like much-but a 4% loss on the dollar adds up mighty fast. Plus who knows who's card a cashier might be taking (stolen) etc. No one refuses good ole cash. That's my reasoning as a former convenience store owner.

@TIM M.: The lottery does not have policies disallowing payment via debit card or check, but we leave it up to each individual retailer to decide which forms of payment they will accept. We want to help players maximize their play while at the same time helping them play smarter. One way we do that is by not allowing the purchase of lottery tickets with a credit card. Lottery games should only be played with money you actually have that is set aside for entertainment. Hope this helps!

An unrelated question. As I understand it, almost all forms of payment are accepted for lottery except for credit cards. What I mean by all forms are common forms, i.e., cash, checks, and debit cards, charged as debit. So, you can't use official credit cards,like a regular VISA, or even use a debit card as credit. Two questions. Why is this? And, why do some local retailers refuse to even accept debit cards, as debit? Those are cash only. Sometimes those stores are run by foreigners but not always. For example, Circle K stores in Dunn and Lillington accept my debit card. When I tried in Fayettville a few months ago, they wouldn't accept it, yet it was the same chain. I guess a third question. I thought NC law allows for this, yet you can't reason with them. What's going on here? NC Lottery
Glad to see Denver, a former retailer, sharing his experience above. He's right! At this time we leave it to the retailer's discretion as to whether or not they accept debit cards for ticket purchases.

NICE!!! 26 STATES IN LFL. JACKPOT HIT 16 TIMES SINCE 2016. 2ND TIER 249. NC IS DOING BETTER THEN MOST STATES. POOR DELAWARE IS THE ONLY STATE WITH NO 1ST OR 2ND PLACE WINS. OF THE 26 STATES ONLY ABOUT 3 OR MAYBE 4 HAVE MORE WINS THEN NC.
